  • In addition to the broader challenges facing the aviation industry, the troubles at Boeing have exacerbated the situation for major airlines like Delta, United, and American, as well as cargo carriers like UPS, and aircraft manufacturer suppliers like Spirit AeroSystems.
Boeing's ongoing issues, particularly related to the 737 MAX, have resulted in significant disruptions to aircraft deliveries and operations for airlines worldwide. This delay in receiving new aircraft has not only hindered fleet expansion plans but has also forced airlines to extend the lifespan of older, less fuel-efficient planes, thereby increasing operational costs.
Delta, United, and American have all felt the impact of these delays, with each airline having significant orders for the 737 MAX. The inability to integrate these new aircraft into their fleets as planned has strained capacity and limited their ability to capitalize on growing demand in certain markets.
UPS, a major player in the cargo airline sector, has also been affected by Boeing's troubles. The delay in receiving freighter versions of the 737 MAX has hampered UPS's ability to modernize its fleet and optimize its operations, potentially impacting its competitiveness in the global logistics market.
Moreover, the ripple effects of Boeing's challenges extend beyond the airlines themselves to their suppliers. Spirit AeroSystems, a key supplier of aircraft components to Boeing, has faced its own set of difficulties. Layoffs at Spirit AeroSystems have not only affected the company's employees but have also disrupted the supply chain, leading to further delays and complications for Boeing and its customers.
In summary, the troubles at Boeing have added another layer of complexity to the challenges already facing major airlines like Delta, United, and American, as well as cargo carriers like UPS, and aircraft manufacturer suppliers like Spirit AeroSystems. Navigating these turbulent skies requires not only resilience and adaptability but also strategic planning and collaboration across the aviation ecosystem.

Trying to navigate and forecast these things is difficult. One can develop a certain level of anxiety if they frequent reddit or any other camp fire discussion on airline hiring. I realized that I missed the “big hiring wave” but I can’t be bothered with it. All I can do is keep showing up for work and produce good pilots for the future as a CFI here in CA. I am 43, so already getting a late start, so I have to be a bit more strategic in my regional selections. At the end of the day I will be thrilled to be a part of the 121 world.
Good video and it helps give some realistic perspective on the climate of things.

Whatever major airline you dream of flying for, do not enter into a cadet- program/flow/ or fly for said major wholly owned. Management has a say so in pilot hiring and pilot hiring managers have a much easier time hiring a pilot from other carriers wholly owned. Example: United loves to hire Endeavor Air pilots because Endeavor is owned by Delta. All the majors do it.

Great video and explanation. Some of the comments makes zero sense and I’m not going to give them any further time. You properly explained the pilot hiring situation and that there are delays and the overall numbers will be lower. I hate when someone uses DEI because what they don’t want to say is “The Good Ole Boy Network”, that has hired unqualified pilots because of a friend or family member who has a position of power. Everyone has to pass all pilot training. Hopefully Boeing can get their shit together. One thing that isn’t stated is the delays in Airbus planes (A321XLR certification) and why Spirit is in trouble (Pratt and Whitney engines). With order backlogs going into the 2030’s, there will be a true shortage of pilots.

Hiring will resume but for most major airlines, they will be hiring for mostly bottom half of the future seniority list. If you get on now the best you can hope for at most places is retiring at top 40 or 50%

Ok fine. Delta is hiring 1100 pilots pr year but they also said that they are going to "Close the gap" in race hiring practices which means less opportunities for the majority of qualified applicants which happen to be white. United stated that half of those hired with them will be women or people of color. POC's are minorities and most pilots are white males by statistical default and because of these racist and sexist DEI policies, white males are facing a difficult time of getting hired since they are a majority and only have a minority of slots available.
By nature of DEI policies, less qualified candidates will become pilots due to preferential treatment. They are mandating a higher percentage of certaian populations be hired means that less qualified individuals from those pools are being selected because in order to make the numbers look good, they need people. Paradoxically, only the best of the best in the white male category will get jobs since less numbers from a much bigger pool will be selected. This will lead to a skills gap that will be noticeable resulting in people seeing a POC or woman pilot and automatically assuming "Diversity hire". Which is wrong ethically but what other option will people have?
United airline already said they are hiring on sex, gender, and race three things that do not qualify nor should they disqualify a pilot. This is institutional racism and society is ok with it because we've been indoctrinated to be fine with racial prejudiced against white people - particularly white males. Screw us. I don't understand why 13% of the population NEEDS to make up 50% of the hiring pool.
The planes may be safe, but due to DEI policies, every time passengers see a black and or woman pilot, we're going to think "Oh must be a diversity hire!" They may be the best pilot who ever flew but due to DEI, we are forced into those thoughts.
Also, is there a lack of women pilots because no one wants them or is it because in a free society, women make different decisions? IDK but I do know that there are grant after grant, scholarship after scholarship for black people and women and program after program to hire black people and women and if they still are coming up short, maybe it's because people make different decisions in life.

I’m sure that people of a different demographic in a different time felt trusted as well for different reasons. Like for example the Tuskegee Airmen who were treated poorly while being skilled, qualified pilots serving their country. Life isn’t fair. Be the best you can be, be a good person and things will work out for you.

It’s math. Fewer candidates from a preferred group means you have to accept a higher percentage from that group to meet targets. (ATC). Nothing to do with anything else. it’s simple math. You will have to lower entry requirements to be able to seat the number of candidates needed for quotas. Unarguable. I’m not flying anymore for leisure. DEI boards.

LOL dood have you seen the classes at United? Theres like maybe a few non white people and females included. If you didnt know DEI is not saying oh youre a white male were not hiring you cause thats grossly wrong and the furthest thing from the truth. It just means that its not gonna be a rotary club for white guys anymore its gonna be a more level playing field because for a while it really was prejudiced against colored pilots and female pilots. DEI is just putting emphasis saying that were gonna let everyone be on equal terms. Look you could choose to believe that DEI is why you wont get hired by a legacy or major and im here to tell you its the furthest thing from the truth. Every colored pilot in my classes before wnd after me have all had exceptional backgrounds. Yea you see some exceptions with low time pilots but thats just connections and luck. I know a white male who knew someone in HR and got a CJO because of connections. No merit. Meanwhile countless captains who are white male or female or colored get bypasses as well.
Im just saying dont have a negative attitude and dont even mention DEI because thats another reason to not hire you because it might show you cant function in a cockpit with someone who isnt a white male. Just be careful brother and keep your head down on the way here.

    Over dramatization.
Doesn’t matter that manufacturers are having issues…. The summer is coming and this who want to travel are selling their RVs and traveling by air.
And who is going to fly them??
    THE PILOTS.
The BIGGEST contractor for flights…. GOVERNMENT.
Many government agencies fly their personnel on commercial flights, not private jets. Those are reserved for some congressional and senatorial leaders. The “regular government folk” travel coach.
Until the economy FILLY TANKS…. There is going to be 1) OT - in which the FAA will not allow or 2) hiring more pilots to alleviate the onslaught of those flying to their destination and back.
That means ground crews and mechanics are going to be needed also.
    It is the obvious.
