Trent, this is awesome, I’m a 42-year-old Police Lieutenant and I have eight years to go to retirement. I’m currently working on my private pilots license and when I retire at age 50 my plan is to have a second career as an airline pilot. You have no idea how much motivation this video has given me. Seriously gives me something exciting to look forward to. Thank you!

As an ambitious guy who has gone through the last 4 years of flight training, I can tell you that this video is 99.99% not possible. Your 8 licenses will cost you more than you budgeted, will depress you beyond belief, won’t be possible for 50% of attempted pilots. I actually do think it’s worth pursuing though, but have all the facts before you commit.

Don’t underestimate the amount of work Trent had to put into get this done in that amount of time. It took me 4 years degree + 2 years of CFI to acquire all the knowledge to become an airline pilot. If you don’t have above average intelligence and aren’t willing to study every breathing moment, extend your time line. Just being realistic here.

So place yourself in the direct path of the people you'd like to meet." Although my brain feels like oatmeal, yes, it can be done! In our neck of the West Virginia woods (I18), we're doing Part61 training in C150s and Cherokee 140s from $110 to $140 an hour. Our goal is to have our pilots complete their Private/Commercial/IFR program at half the cost of ATP schools. Should be interesting!

I am taking drastic steps now by selling my small business and getting minimal responsibilities. I have a wife and 3 kids but we own our property and our vehicles. As soon as the business sells, I'll be debt free and have a little extra to get started on my instrument rating. We'll see how it goes. Great video. I was 22, single, young military guy. Forked over $1000 to a flight school in Florida. Flew 55 hours, 11 of it solo. Then they told me no more flying until I take the ground school. Three months later I got orders to South Korea. Then marriage, finishing college, kids and career. The dream died. Fast forward I have a son with nearly 4,00O hours ex military who just started flying for the majors. He lives my dream! And that's fine! He loves it!!! Best of luck to you. I wish I was 15 years younger, I would try to do what you doing! God's speed!!!

Thanks Trent for sharing this encouraging yet really informative video. I am 36, based in Bahrain and was looking to change my career to being a Commercial Pilot. Honestly, the age factor was my biggest discouragement. In fact, I even attended an aviation academy seminar couple years back (around age 32) and was informed by their local flight instructor that commercial airlines only currently recruit younger pilots between the ages of 22 to 27 at the least, which again put me off for pursuing this career. Flying an airplane has been my childhood passion and due to financial constraints, I was never able to attend a flying school to achieve this career path. Now, 15 years into my work experience with 3 different careers, I got tired of the mundane routine tasks due to lack of passion for my work but was able to grow financially doing it. It was an sudden urge to re-explore my options, which made me believe that I still have the time to go for it.
Watching your video gave me that hope and inspiration to fulfill my flying dream 👍.

So inspiring Trent! I just finished "writing" most of my tests including Advanced Ground Instructor, just one more to go later this week which is FIA. After that probably will go do all the simulator hours, then finding a local CFI to get more dual instrument hours before my Instrument checkride. What sucks is that my plane is undergoing an overhaul which is costing a LARGE sum of cash out of pocket. Considering instructing out of my own plane when it's all done, that way I can get paid for both instruction time and time for renting out my own plane. That might just be enough for me to replace my current income. Regardless, because of you, I joined SkyWest Cadet program, you've been a true inspiration for those of us that are a bit older (I'm 47) and aspiring to be a professional pilot. Hope to meet you one day.

I turn 35 in April. I’m currently in a stuffy office, working as a private banker, getting lazy and out of shape more and more every day.
I have played Microsoft flight simulator since I was 12, been obsessed with commercial flight since then.
So the other night I was sitting next to my wife as I was flying a b747 to her home state showing her all the bells and whistles and she asked me “Why didn’t you become a pilot?”
That stuck with me…cause I didn’t have a good reason. Never really looked into it. Always thought it was out of grasp.
Suffice to say right now I’m working hard to get in shape and healthier (I am healthy) just could be a lot better before I start having issues that would ground me. I am going to flight school.

      WOW! This is crazy!
I'm 54 and wanting to get back into aviation.
I earned my private in Dec.1998. I then shuttled planes between the 3 fbo's for my flight school to build free hrs. I was also an EAA Young Eagle Flight Leader for a few years.(very satisfying) Got bored and decided to move from Wisconsin to Colorado and earned a degree in aircraft maintenance and an A&P. Worked for 12 yrs as a structural tech on business jets/turbo props. Which absolutely burned me out. That's when I left aviation all together.
Now, at 54, I want back in! But am hesitant bc of my age. I do not want to go ATP, but would be content as a cfi or designated examiner.
      You've given me hope again.
My biggest hurdle, besides funds, is that i lost all my logbooks during many moves.
Right now, I'm considering approaching a major flight school and reaching an agreement to go through currency, instrument, commercial, cfi/cfii, me, mei, meii, then d.e., while also offering my A&P services in trade.
      I don't know if that's realistic… ..but I'm going to try!
      Thanks for this video!
      Might you have any suggestions?

That is awesome! I'll be thinking about you on the 28th.
Me… I actually received my ppl on 12-8-1998. Then was a ferry pilot for about a year, shuttling planes for my fbo. Got bored, broke. You know, life happened. Decided to move from Wisconsin to Denver and got an A&P, and a degree in aviation maintenance technology. Worked for 12 yrs as a structural tech on business jets/turboprops til 2010. Then got out of aviation all together. Lost all my logbooks since. (That hurts). Now, I'm thinking about trying to work out a deal with a major flight school to fast track thru meii while hopefully working part time for them (during training) as an A&P.
End goal is to be a Designated Examiner. I have no idea if that plan is possible, but I'm tired of grinding in something I don't enjoy. I'd rather work my ass off again in aviation, to at least end my working days doing something I love and miss.
I'd be interested in knowing how the SIM training works out. That wasn't an option in the late 90's for me.

My boyfriend is 46 years old and in a unique position to follow this path, with access to a mentor, planes, instructors, and has the finances and time to dedicate towards this goal. He asked me to watch this video and honestly, it's so exciting that it would make anyone want to consider a career change. I am in full support of a complete career change for him, and your path seems not only valid, but as a natural overachiever myself, I believe it can be done. Congratulations to you! If he follows your path, we will certainly give you credit and let you know his outcome. Great video!

I’m digging your motivation sir! I retired from the Air Force after 22 years as a flight engineer. Unfortunately not a whole lot of aircraft require FE’s anymore so I am wanting to be a pilot. I am 48, and after reaching out to Aero guard in phoenix they make the prospect of becoming an airline pilot at my age daunting. $109,000 for 12 months of training, living in phoenix, and then possibly hiring me as a CFI afterwards is what they told me. I received my A&P without attending a formal school so I’m thinking I’ll go ahead and knock out these written tests on my own as well. Thank you for your positivity and motivation! You’re giving us later in life motivated people the motivation that we need

I’m 30 years old now currently a travel nurse looking to switch careers. Do you or you know of someone that does one on one coaching/mentoring? I want someone who’s gonna tell me what to do step-by-step and help me take the legwork and guess work out of it.
I want to be told where to go, what scholarships, and schools to apply for etc. I’m open to living anywhere in the US, so I can get to the airlines as fast as possible. I will be dedicating all my time and resources towards doing this and not working(hopefully, if not, I can work prn and have a the ability to work and I think 40 of the states) I want to get this done as fast as possible like I did accelerated nursing program.

This video has given me so much inspiration, Trent! I'm turning 27 in a week and have my first ever discovery flight scheduled on my birthday. Like many, I've always had a passion for aviation but never had the guts to pursue it. I've watched a few of your videos along with a couple of other youtube pilots. However, your videos have much more detailed information and I very much appreciate your attitude and presentation. Like I said very inspiring. So much so that I am extremely interested in becoming a student of yours! I've subscribed to your youtube channel and email newsletter as well as connecting on all others forms of social media. I look forward to hearing from you, Trent.

Thank You! I've been encouraging my 19 yr old grandson to pursue a career in aviation. He's got all the "right stuff". Got him a ride in a 182 with a great friend. He absolutely loved it. He's got a list of 6 different schools he's been considering. Your tips on part 61 vs 141 were invaluable to he and my son and I. Can't thank you enough.

I went to a part 61 and that is one of the reasons why I was able to accumulate my ratings so quickly. I really don’t have any experience with a part 141 school. The Internet is filled with articles, comparing one versus the other, and I would encourage that you do a bit of googling to hear from people more informed than me.
