Whenever life gets you down, just stop and remember of all the 100s of thousands of years you could have been alive and you got to be alive at the same time as Matt Pike.
and be grateful to whatever random happenstance or evil design caused you out to both find and appreciate this music. just think what if you had said "I don't get it" and stopped listening forever the first time that the you heard Sleep, for instance. Would be tragic in its way. To not have capacity to enjoy Pike's riffle. Thanks for provoking some thought in my head this evening. Very mjuch appreciated.
Des is my favorite drummer. His style is highly personalized and unique. He is the support structure on which the weight of the band rests. I'm fucking obsessed with High on Fire yet again. Perhaps the obsession never truly left me.
DUDE no shit right. I usually don't notice good drumming but his drumming is like really trippy at some points and really menacing. I was on shrooms a couple nights ago and the drumming on Nemesis from the Surrounded by Thieves album makes you feel like your lagging, so fucking badass.
This seems like a song that sleep would play. Fuzzy, droney, and stoner style music. The writing for this must have been when pike was writing music for sleep again. Great song. Break your fucking neck head banging kind of song.
Isn't easy to sing while playing in general, especially a lot of the riffs/songs these guys play. Sometimes I wish they'd get a second guitarist for touring, then Matt could focus a bit more on his vocals. It would give them an even fuller/heavier sound live, and would make a big difference when he's playing solos. Not that it doesn't sound good with the bass/drums keeping the rhythm, but sometimes it just sounds a little empty. Can't blame them though if they don't want to pay to have a touring guitarist; hard enough as it is to make a living from music.. unless it's mainstream shit that's on the radio/MTV lol.
+EricJh21690 I think it has to do more with his vocal style. Not something you want to do live constantly. Definitely not safe for his vocal chords, but sounds better than most growls. Also, the live setting may not capture his full voice, so you don't get to here all of the overtones that you do on the album version.

cool.. I love band opinions that originate from how their drummer plays.. As a guitarist, it's like looking at the under side of a rock.
if you pay attension his drumming plays like a guitar

I resonate with this comment so much. I listen to them everyday, and every day my love for them grows. Too bad Des left
Matt Pike is the heaviest guitarist on any planet. Follow the smoke to the riff-filled land!!!!!
