- NASCAR had a popularity upswing underway in the late 1980s. One reason was their open outreach to the many small, local race track fans across the country.
On July 9, 1989, Winston Cup drivers Rusty Wallace, Davey Allison, Michael Waltrip, Geoff Bodine, Willie T. Ribbs, Rick Wilson, Derrick Cope, and Joe Ruttman came to Saugus Speedway for a Race of Champions promotion.
NASCAR drivers borrowed top local Modifieds for a 30 lap event, followed by the local drivers running 30 laps, with combined results determining the winning team. An extended autograph session let fans meet with their favorite drivers. This is that story!
