  • How To Change Volvo V50 S40 C30 Timing Belt & Water Pump | 2011-2016 D2 Drive | Ford Citroen Peugeot Mazda
    In this video, I change the timing belt and water pump on my 2011 Volvo V50 1.6 D2 Drive diesel estate car. This guide should also apply almost identically for Volvo S40 saloon and Volvo C30 hatchback of the same era. I also think this engine was present in some of the larger drive models such as the V70 and S60 Volvos.
    If you're going to change a cambelt on a car like this, it can be challenging and take time to complete, so it makes sense to stick to quality parts that will stand the test of time. In the video, I use a Gates timing belt and water pump kit.

    The car I'm working on has the 2011-2016 D2 engine, code D4162T and has proven to be a solid, stalwart engine with over 136k miles on the clock and still going strong. However, the cambelt is due, and on these engines, it is required every 87k miles.
    The best way to confirm whether your car has the same engine configuration as mine is that it's the one with 8 valves, a 6-speed gearbox and a dry DPF system.
    This is not to be confused with the earlier Pre-2011 1.6 Drive model which has 16v, a 5-speed and a wet DPF. That earlier model has a different timing belt with a longer maintenance interval and a different procedure to install it, although I think the water pump is the same between the two versions.
    This engine is actually a Ford unit and is used by a lot of different manufacturers in the cars listed below, so this guide applies not just to Volvo D2 cambelts and water pumps:
    Citroen 1.6 HDi
    Peugeot 1.6 HDi
    Ford 1.6 TDCi
    Volvo D2
    Mazda 1.6D

    Tanks for a great video! It really helped me a lot when I changed timing belt and waterpump on my 2012 Volvo C30 D2. I didn’t have special tools to lock the wheels in position but ordinary drill bits worked very well. 8 mm for the cam and 5 mm for both the diesel pump and the crank. I looked at serveral videos when I prepared for this job and this is the best.

    Hey man, thank you so much for the video! Just finished changing the timing belt and water pump on my Volvo V40 D2 '13 plate, pretty much the same layout and everything.
    The only thing I 'messed up' was when checking the timing belt placement, I marked the belt and camshaft and after a full rotation the belt moves a tooth back - which is normal and I didn't know. Both cam and crank aligned at all rotations which is all that mattered.

    Awesome guide :-) Helped me with the the job on my Citroen c5 and definately will help when I'll tackle it on my brothers Volvo V70 with the same engine :-) Nice touch including torque specs saving people time. The roller wheel was quite dry/noisy even though the car had rolled "only" 177k km. I guess a testament to not postpone the job after it's due :-)

    Good video - but the Crankshaft Pulley does not just come out like that! How did you stop the crankshaft from turning?

      My crankshaft pulley came out easy, it wasn't seized. You must not turn the crank shaft independently or it will cause a timing issue.

    Hi great video. Im going to replace some lifters on my volvo v50. Do i need to take off the camshaft? And if i have to, the timing belt must off also?

      Thanks! Interesting, I've never done that job on one of these engines so can't say for sure. But I would definitely be expecting to remove the camshaft to access the lifters, and if you remove the cambelt I would expect to be removing the timing belt. Best bet is to have a google around or look in a manual, you might be lucky.
      Why are you replacing the lifters? If they are gummed up you might be better off with a treatment and engine flush.

      The car had not been used for a Long time, and a friend of my bought it to have it for a second car. Men he got tired of all the fault on it. So i overtok it. I found out that it had problem with the cem. When i fixed that, all the fault codes were gone. But it has a nasty tikkking. So i guess there Are some lifters who Are worn out, but its Just a guess. Its ok when cold, but after a few min it starts. And hear a thumping noise from the airfilter. But do you think i should change oil first? My friend changed the oil before i got it

      @@Deviathal I would add an engine flush additive to the oil and give it a really good flush through, drain it then replace with new, and consider a hydraulic lifter additive.
      Run that for a while and then see if it improves before delving into significant surgery.
      I'm not an expert on this but I think its unusual for hydraulic lifters to fail like that. They just gum up over time.

    Hello great videon. Your link to the timing locking tool don’t work. Can you measure the exact diameter for the pins you used? 1:01

      Hi, I've just been out the workshop and here are the measurements done with with a digital vernier. The four main pins are all 50mm long, with these diameters, 4.85, 4.93, 7.9 and 11.5. I suspect the last number on the first two isn't critical. The tensioner right angled pin is 45mm on the long side with a diameter of 4.98. How's that? :)

      Sounds very likely that it would be the same 1.6 diesel engine. Check the code is the same on the top of your engine to be sure. It should say D4162T. Hope that helps!

    Amazing video!
    Changed on my volvo v60 d2 2011 and it was almost exactly like in the video. I had a lot more cables which was no issues.
    The big last bolt on the big wheel on the multibelt/alternator belt, I couldn't for the life of me apply 30nm + 180 degrees. The max Icould do was 30nm + ~45 degrees.
    The +180 degrees is extremely tight and could be over well 100nm(?)
    (I am assuming 180 degrees is half a lap with my spanner)
    Will ~45 be enough? Or did I miss something?

      Cheers Cristian, glad the video helped you. I reckon you'll be fine with 45 degrees if that's as tight as you could get it. I believe the extra turn is to stretch the bolt to spec, a small stretch will very likely suffice.

      Cheers Daniel, and good question. To maximise your chances of getting this out, put the car in gear and get someone to press the brake pedal while you try to remove it. It wasn't in too solidly for me.

    Great tutorial mate! I would like to know if you used flywheel locking tool or managed to remove and refit the pulley bolt only with 1st gear and brake pressed (i have Ford Focus 3 with same engine and flywheel locking hole is not present, as it was on older models). Also, i am curious how you were sure to have fitted correctly the timing belt on the right side before tensioning it (first you have fitted, then went anticlockwise / i heard that even skipping 1 or 2 teeth could make a mess / did u make a sign on the belt to compare with the old one or just fitted it naturally?!)?!

      Cheers! Didn't use the flywheel locking tool in the end, got away with the old in-gear and foot on the brake method for the pulley bolt. Worked just fine! :)
      It's always disconcerting fitting a cambelt, but start from the bottom pulley, and work anticlockwise keeping the belt as tight as possible. By the time you've worked upwards and got it onto the teeth of the cam pulley it should become obvious that you couldn't get it on to the next tooth along no matter how hard you tried. At that point, you'll know its right. It won't be super tight, but not particularly slack either.
      Take your time with it, you definitely don't want to get it wrong and knock the cars timing out.

      It's very hard for me to say, but I'd reckon on around £500. Not cheap enough for me to simply pass on to a mechanic at least. :)
      I suspect you could easily get an accurate quote if you call a local mechanic up.
