I once brought a 13 year old 850 estate. He had spent £2k on a new Ac system , £500 on a new wiper assembly and £400 on a new windscreen at a Volvo dealer before selling it to me 3 months later. That was on top of full main dealer service history, and thousands more in receipts. I’ve always brought second hand Volvo’s since, people generally keep them immaculately.
Maybe Matt is the one in 1000 dealers but in my experience sellers know it will make zero difference to the price they get offered. Dealers factor in valet fees anyway. Whether you hand over a show car or a skip on wheels, you're going to be offered rock bottom

I've had my Volvo v50 t5 For about 4 years not had to spend big money on it only thing I have done is had the engine tuned now running high horsepower still running and pulling strong Touchwood
It is Focus sized because it is almost Focus. It has been build together with Ford and use same platform as same age Ford Focus. Ford owned litlebit of Volvo that time. Also P3 S80/V70 is built using Ford parts and it uses same platform as Ford Mondeo.
What a good buy - both for you and your customer, though I think I might have tried to get a bit more from them, given the condition and history, but a profit is a profit and not to be sniffed at! 👍
I agree. Think Matt has shorted himself on this motor in the name of ‘ cashflow / recycling money “. Imo . I guess if you buy sone turkeys in a row the pressure is on and the confidence drops. Love the quote btw “ I try and keep my overheads / costs low” …. From the guy who openly and famously usually “ massively overspends “ !! Irony alert 😆
I have a 2008 2.0d without DPF. They existed with and without DPF, probably depending on which market it was made for. Mine is made in Belgium- Summum equipment, dynaudio, bluetooth, xenon, heated seats, memory seats, front-rear sensors, currently 383,000 km. I replaced the turbine, wheel bearing, alternator, rear shock absorbers and clutch. I kind of got used to it, I'll have it as long as possible.
Front sensors? Don't think I have ever seen it on v50. Was trying to find it when I was looking to buy one. And also Bluetooth usually came 2012. Must be a special car you have :)
Funny you keep mentioning the Ford Focus. The s40/v50 of this era are based on the same model year Focus because Volvo was owned /partially owned by Ford at the time. There is even a FoMoCo stamp on the front strut towers
I've had one of these as my daily driver for the last 7 years. I went for an SE, rather than the R-Design, more discrete and mature styling plus better equipment as standard. You wouldn't want an automatic with the 2.0D engine, it would have had a Ford powershift transmission which were unreliable, but the D5s with a geartronic Auto were better, but not many of these around. It's been high maintenance as I expected, but much cheaper than paying for a finance car. I even did a road trip to Croatia in it.
Had a pre-facelift V50 Sport which I sold this year.. R-Design spec was introduced on the facelift, when Volvo decided that they wanted to steal sales from the 3-Series Touring. Sport was better than R-Design in some respects, as those R-Design two-tone seats get very grubby quite easily (Sport had black leather as standard). Mine was very well appointed; electric, heated leather seats, cruise, air-con, dual-climate control. A great budget cruiser that you can service with gen-2 Focus parts. Mine also had the 2.0D engine which I believe has PSA origins- the same unit can be found in some Peugeot/Citroen commercials of that era. Not the last word in refinement but quick, easy to work on and powerful with a lot of low-end torque that you'd expect. Sold mine as I wanted something smaller...so I got a C30 (which I always wanted) with the same power plant and equipment spec. Always liked Volvo; something about them that doesn't give off the same negative vibe their German counterparts.
Hi Matt, I had a 2012 v50 estate for a couple of years. Mine was the 1.6 E drive but I thought it was fantastic. Great looking car and went well enough for zero road tax. Only sold it because I needed something 4wd to pull a horse trailer. Loved the v50. Now also have a v40 R design with the same zero road tax 1.6 engine. Absolutely love it. Would love to see a video on one of those.
@@yreva532much better when Volvo put them together too. I owned one in a V60, pushing 200,000 but drove like it had only done 20,000. Surprising amount of power in it too (for a small diesel in a big car at least). Shows as well what comes of taking care of it with servicing and good fuel etc.
@@johnb8956 to be fair, all volvo did was buy the engines and redesign intake pipes to fit, nothing engine core wise was changed really. They're good engines in any psa product too, have 150k on ours and doesn't miss a beat, and as you say, does pull well, have surprised a decent few much more expensive cars with it
@@yreva532 oh yeah, it’s not like they completely redesigned them or anything. But as far as I’m aware they were almost fully put together in the Volvo factory using shared parts. Also, while I can’t attest specifically to reliability, I can say from personal experience that a mate of mine’s Ford with a 1.6D was much more sluggish than mine.
@@johnb8956 they do have a few issues that can effect power, ford did change a few things too and they were never quite as punchy as psa or volvo ones, more smooth but not as fast
Love it! Used to own an '09 V50 out here in the states, such a fun little car! I ended up selling it to my younger brother and using the money as a down payment on a Golf Sportwagen. Love my current car but still miss that little Swedish nugget sometimes.... glad it's still in the family at least.
Got to love myself some Volvo, their interiors are clean and nice (well.... not the new EX90 and Ex30 they are horrible like any other car a shitty big display that just looks cheap) But i have owned it and it is a nice car to drive! Right now I am on a volvo S60 2002 though with around 275k miles and verrry well maintained! and for this V50, good it is the updated version! Gives you the 3.5mm headphone jack, and the better interior design compared to gen 1 of this, and of course a nicer trim overall! Had the same in my Volvo C30, which is still such a nice looking car!
Matt there is a old Range Rover like the one you have on transformation channel been parked on a drive in southport looks like it’s ready for the scrap heap might be good for parts for yours
On my third V50 - 2012 1.6D SE Lux S/S bought new - ~98,000 miles and zero VEL 👍 As Volvo have now decided estate cars will no longer feature in their range in the UK I will keep this until I have to replace it.... I was told that the shape of the centre console was inspired by the contours of a Swedish chair and the control panel by a Bang & Olufsen hifi remote control...
I love Volvo’s, great looking, well built, decent to drive, not too ostentatious just quietly understated and in my experience have really good quality paintwork. This looked mint from Judy a quick wash and clean out which is testament to how good they are as everyday cars. Can’t deny though I’d have golfed to have seen it after you’d “massively overspent”! Great vid as always 👍🏻
Coincidentally, there is one of these parked outside my house, same year, same colour and similar mileage. The owner knocked on my door to apologise for parking but he had little option as it had broken down with a knackered clutch and was undriveable. Apparently, he's decided to scrap it because he reckons it's not worth repairing. Out of curiosity I got a valuation on Autocar and it estimated £2200 - £ 2700. I don't know what a replacement clutch would cost or indeed if there are other issues with the car - it's MOT expires in a couple of weeks. Hopefully it will be collected in a few days!
Another really good video, so easily watchable, found you when my son was buying his MX-5, we used your video to help us with that which I’m grateful for and saw you at South Minms a few weeks back but bottled saying hello!!
Had a V40 23 years old And everything worked, heated seats, air conditioning, the engine had more than 200,000 km and was still running 200 kmh on the Autobahn
Think I am going to start a 'high peak bingo' - to include 'I'm quite impressed with this', 'I have massively overspent' , ' a new set of number plates will really lift it' For a tie breaker you have to guess how long it will ACTUALLY be when Matt says I will see you in X number of days! 😂❤
Always ok with a Volvo estate Matt👍👍...I have many happy memories of cruising the motorways in a 740 and 760 when I drove for a living.....Thankfully some of the newer Volvos are better looking and less 'Boxy'.....Ideal if you have lots of stuff to shift quickly! 😀😀
Excellent, and a good decision to flip it to someone needing a cheap estate. A few quid in the pocket, and for someone doing up a house that'll be perfect. I also run an old estate car, and it's invaluable for lugging stuff around in, the sort of things I wouldn't want in my nice 5 series.
Matt, these videos are what I look forward to! Please never stop. I’ve looked through your website I’m doing driving lessons and have my test soon. I need a car, I do love Fords but any will do. I need a big enough car ( doesn’t need to be a big engine) as I am a DJ so need to be able to fit my stuff in. What would you recommend? Also, scrap the DJ equipment for a second what first car (reliable not too pricey) would you recommend. Talk about ur videos to everybody as this is where I learn stuff. Thanks for reading.
I own a 1.6d last edition 6 speed and lots of equipment. With factory 17” it actually rides great, comfortable without being a ship in corners. Easily going in Portugal for 5 to 7k€.
Just watched another TH-camr saying that sales have slumped in recent weeks. Vehicles under 4k still selling ok but more expensive models aren't selling. PS I use notebook on my phone to keep notes, very handy if you forget something.
I wish the C30 and Polstar sports models still existed. Ok I can't fit a bike in the back but it's a nice looking alternative to the escorts and audia etc
I love your blogs on all the cars, I always look forward to to them, I would love to see you that’s if you can get a hold of a one is an Aston Martin lagonda even if you just take it for a drive
A mate was in the trade and got sick of it. Went working in a pharmaceutical plant and still does. Back in July after two years out of it he realised with all his connections he could still do a bit of trading on his own terms as he works 4 days on 4 off. Hes flipped 24 cars since then and earned some serious side hustle money. His motto is little and often. He takes smaller profits to be cheapest on the market. He says it’s better to take 500 profit on two cars in a week than 750 on one car trying to get more out of it. He says it’s bloody hard work because it’s more or less two full time jobs but it’s worth the effort clearly.
I owned 2 V70 D5 diesels while working in a sales job. My last one did 385.000 kms. Changing distribution belts and water pump every 160.000 was very expensive. Otherwise zero problems. The GPS did fail and wouldn’t pop up but was using my phone to navigate. I would have ordered another new one but Volvo were getting too expensive due to all that leasing rubbish. My sales man also retired. Moved on to Kia Ceed. Now run a Tucson which is incredibly reliable
The vovlos form the mid 2000s will still look elegant and stylish in 50 years, they just hit the sweet spot in design. And they look smart from pretty much every angle.
Just bought a V50 from 2006. Same engine, 200 k on the clock. Still going. Needed dome bushings and hub, all the panels have some dents. But - on the motorway it goes like new. And I know those cars
An ideal car for someone looking for a daily workhorse who lives in a rural or semi-rural area. I disagree that it's a small car - there's plenty of room for kids, dogs, shopping and hauling old junk to the local tip.The only downside is the high tax.
Love your videos and how you do ALL the car vertical checks AFTER you have bought it, (I presume it's just for the content) . I had around 6 Volvo cars, Last Volvo I had was a V70 that was faultless for the 7yrs I had it. Next car will probably be a XC90
They are brilliant on fuel apparently. The RFL is cheaper than the 10 reg 2.0dci Qashqai we have had since new and got a replacement for nearky two years ago yet we still have 🤷🏻
As a swede I can say that the V50 is known here for poor reliabilty, I would not hesitate to buy a high milage V70 (actually running one with over 300.000km now) but the V50 just is not built to the same standard so you lucked out with this one I think.
Never ceases to amaze me too, how people give away cars to make someone else's profit, they must be wealthy or stupid or both. And the thing is they are cheap, too cheap but not by the time Matt's added his profits, it's expensive and he wonders why people want a decent car without problems for the price he asks!, never ever p/X to dealers, daylight robbery.
I ran a 2008 V50 with a 1.6D engine for a year , It was reliable but very frustrating car. Ironically i still do see it about on occasions ( Rather sad i remember it’s reg number ). my biggest pet hates were inadequate headlights, bulb changes were a big nightmare especially the front sidelights , Also very noisy & poor torque when climbing hills at slow speeds ( The turbo kicks in too high up the rev band). Then the emissions system with eolys fluid in a separate tank , Only dealers could do the work along unless you spend £1000k + On vida - dice system .

It is Focus sized because it is almost Focus. It has been build together with Ford and use same platform as same age Ford Focus. Ford owned litlebit of Volvo that time. Also P3 S80/V70 is built using Ford parts and it uses same platform as Ford Mondeo.
which is not a bad thing at all. I owned a V50 and it was mostly the Volvo not the Ford bits that annoyed me... Design is great, though...
I’ve just purchased one this morning, beautiful car and goes like stink, mot till July this year with one advisory on a tyre. Good luck with this one
They’re good cars
Yes, the factory in Gent is known to build excellent quality.
Front sensors? Don't think I have ever seen it on v50. Was trying to find it when I was looking to buy one. And also Bluetooth usually came 2012. Must be a special car you have :)
Tow bar is very handy as well
Funny you keep mentioning the Ford Focus.
I love these. My missus has got a 2014 V40, still drives like new
Had a pre-facelift V50 Sport which I sold this year..
Good turn around Matt, any profit keeps the cogs turning👍🏻
Hi Matt,
I had a 2012 v50 estate for a couple of years.
Would love to see a video on one of those.
fun fact, the 1.6 edrive is a 1.6hdi (psa/peugeot/citroen) engine, same with the 2.0 one, both very good engines
Excellent video as always. Things looking up that many likes in short space of time.
Quite like these Volvo's, seem timeless. 👍
Thanks!
@@HighPeakAutos I dont know if it's of any interest but I emailed you about a Mondeo I am selling. It's in excellent condition with huge history.
Thanks Matt another great video - that Volvo is great value and a nice motor. Good find.
Got to love myself some Volvo, their interiors are clean and nice (well.... not the new EX90 and Ex30 they are horrible like any other car a shitty big display that just looks cheap)
But i have owned it and it is a nice car to drive!
Nice Volvo Matt and as you said a quick turn around, a quick profit and the person that brought it has got a good car 👍
Looked at a volvo before getting a bmw, shame about powershift auto in v40 cross country.
2.0 Psa engine I think, pretty sure they're on a Ford floorpan too.
The rear booster was only on V70/XC70 I believe
Yeah, the C30, S40 and V50 were basically MK2 Ford Focuses in terms of the mechanicals and most of the engines.
@@FatHead1979 which was not the worst part. Volvos own electronics were not very reliable from my experience.
4:35 front door and rear passenger door colour looks slightly off to me. Might be just that’s it needs a good clean.
Another really good video, so easily watchable, found you when my son was buying his MX-5, we used your video to help us with that which I’m grateful for and saw you at South Minms a few weeks back but bottled saying hello!!
Good thing you remembered who it was who wanted an inexpensive one.
Loves his Volvos and Saabs so why are Abba never on the radio ?
I love my Volvo, but I prefer Swedish death metal to Abba.
I just sold my 2012 s60 due to tranny issues and now Im looking for a v50 or c30😊
Hi Matt had one of these my self 5 years ago great car had lot of use out of it and upgraded to its big sister the XC70 which I absolutely love 😊
Had a V40 23 years old And everything worked, heated seats, air conditioning, the engine had more than 200,000 km and was still running 200 kmh on the Autobahn
i used to have 02 s40 with 2.0t, it had over 500k km and also went 200km/h lol.
Think I am going to start a 'high peak bingo' - to include 'I'm quite impressed with this', 'I have massively overspent' , ' a new set of number plates will really lift it'
For a tie breaker you have to guess how long it will ACTUALLY be when Matt says I will see you in X number of days! 😂❤
Don’t forget ‘Have the gearbox serviced.’ 😂👍
And premium fuel every other fill
It just needs a good buffing!
"well we're here" is another favourite. And "what am I going to do with this?"
oh and ‘It’s a nice car this.’
Great cars ,had a s60 diesel, 100% reliable. Great video mate and quick sale 😊
Love an old Volvo
Your XC70 is class
Still think they're a good looking car the V50
Always liked the V50 amazing how much car you get for so little money. Love the product placement Matt when you driven past your showroom 😂😂.
Nice car, I was thinking of getting one as a tip car while between cars, but in the end didn't need one, but I would have been happy for a while
Matt, these videos are what I look forward to!
Thanks for watching. Something like a Focus would be a good idea
@@HighPeakAutosi do like the focus, what is the reliability like? I hear to stay away from eco boosts too. Thanks for replying so quickly!
I bought a V50 the same day you uploaded this video. Very nice car!
Good choice!
PS
I use notebook on my phone to keep notes, very handy if you forget something.
The little V50 D5 is a tasty piece of work tuff as old boots ! 👏🏻👍🏻
Got my High Peak dabber ready, Needs a buff,3mm of tread, back seats never been sat on,that will touch in……..Bingo! Love this channel 💪
😂😂 oh wow, I’m so predictable
New set of plates?
Always looking dapper mate, have to say
Hi matt a very quick sale with a small profit. Esta muy bien
Thank you!
Good car for the money.
I enjoyed that video. Nice car, reasonably priced and affordable to the vast majority.
❤🎉 yes
Wise decision Matt, otherwise we know those infamous words which frequently follow 'I've massively overspent'.
Just bought a V50 from 2006. Same engine, 200 k on the clock. Still going. Needed dome bushings and hub, all the panels have some dents. But - on the motorway it goes like new. And I know those cars
Love that....few dollars in the back pocket for little effort. This video will make you more :)
Hope so!
Worked on them for years got the Turbo worn bearing shaft noise will need a new turbo very soon...
Such an elegant yet modest car, i really like these
Woho, another Volvo!!
Nice one and lovely quick turnaround...👍
Had one maroon with wait for it 2020 thousand miles on the clock and worked perfectly good engines well built and a nice car
The RFL is cheaper than the 10 reg 2.0dci Qashqai we have had since new and got a replacement for nearky two years ago yet we still have 🤷🏻
Matt - I seem to recall you have a birthday coming up! Happy Birthday!
As a swede I can say that the V50 is known here for poor reliabilty, I would not hesitate to buy a high milage V70 (actually running one with over 300.000km now) but the V50 just is not built to the same standard so you lucked out with this one I think.
my experience too. shabby electronics, had to reset everything often. underpowered with the 1.6D.
we love our 2020 xc90! Volvos are great cars.
I got one volvo as well as the c30 R design today for 700£ I think it is a really great deal. 😊
How many miles?
@@danthemaninfierno 125k miles,
I'm still driving my 09 plate chevrolet lacetti estate 1.8 auto, got 64k on the clock, should do me another 10 years 👍🏻. Cost me 5k in 2015 with 7k on the clock !!!
