    This movie is a flawed gem. I always loved the baroque, gothic look. Great cast too.

    One thing this movie absolutely nailed was the paranoia of the Houses and the constant threat of assassination

      Very true. And assassination was a key tool of warfare in the future as to minimize large scale civilian losses, and to literally weaken and take out rival houses. Well done galactic feudalism.

    I always loved the ASMR-ish whisper used for the character's inner thoughts. It gave them an intimacy needed and avoided it sounding like a narrator.

      I loved it also. Some die-hards hate it but it was in the freaking books. They'll say the books don't follow the movies but when they literally do, it's so awful lol.

      @@olstar18 Also remember the time period. There was no internet and youtube channels to do full on explanations of the books and all the worlds and characters. This was a movie that had to be made for everyone and if they had no exposition, it would have been an even worse flop. I saw it when I was young before the books and because of that movie, it got me reading them. I loved the lore and the characters and their interplay.

      The story of how Patrick Stewart met Sting (not knowing who he was at all) is hilarious and worth seeing, but PS made a point of saying how much he was in awe of MVS and of the chance to work with him.

      Literally warm beer tastes like piss anyway. In any case, the suit provides drink, processing urine too* but not food. And even an unwashed Fremen would not ''go to the bathroom'' inside his stillsuit.
      *I think it is mentioned in the book.

    iirc, the suits were reused on the borg in star trek. prolly patrick stewart kept them in his garage and was like : "hey we could use this stuff, its been in there for 10+ years...

    something to note: inside the shield wall the air temperature is noted as being 300 kelvin, roughly 80 degrees fahrenheiht (about 27 c). outside is 350 degrees kelvin, which doesnt sound like much of a difference, but translates to 170 degrees fahrenheit (about 77 c). Dune is *hot.*

      Time magazine which I still have from college predicted an ice age with glaciers extending to Florida by the year 2000. With India and China building new coal fired plants daily, US can only change the environment minimally. Read the book "Unsettled" by Obama's Green Czar.

    I love the heck out of that forcefield sound, it's so different from most interpretations of the noise, it sounds likes it being warped, it has a mildly creepy feeling to it, the sound resonates with me really well. Perhaps the frequency it's in, or maybe the actual sound has something to do with that, it just feels so..."human"...it opens my eyes to how awesome and fascinating the human race is....anyone else love the sound?

      I saw the movie before I read the book but damn...Kyle MacLachlan's Paul is SO GOOD.
      Especially when you compare him to the shit actor who played Paul in the Sci-Fi channel movie of Dune.

    Y'know I was just thinking.
    Paul is basically a Marty Stu "done right" in terms of literary fashion. The literature acknowledges that he's been trained all his life by some top men, yet also sets the stage for the more prophetic side as well.
    It's like a well-written Superman kind of "marty stu".

    The book goes into great detail about his ecology education and his ultimate hope for the planet. It is too bad it was left out of the movie, but I can see why.

    I used to work in the spice mines.... always came out smelling of different herbs depending on where we were workin... one day oregano, next cumin , thyme... it was quite an experience. We had one hell of a chef in the cafeteria though

      In the Syfy channel miniseries they had wing-like structures with propellers on them. Unbalanced looking but definitely more bird-like than this.

      Yeah, admittedly, compositing an object without moving parts into a scene by hand is challenging enough. Trying to do a moving matte of a ship with flapping wings would've been one hell of a headache of the VFX folks.

      With the exception of Leto, Gurney and Paul, everyone should be fitted desert style. However, Duke Leto's tubes were all left out and Paul's are secured. It's really subtle. I'd suggest watching again.

      But it's the dryness that defines a desert, and it can get pretty cold in Earth deserts.

    I like to think of each Dune productions so far as follow:
    Dune (1984): For it's ambience and feel.
    Frank's Herbert's Dune: For the information.
    Frank Herbert's Children of Dune: For the emotion.
    I think it's better to start with the 1984 movie to get the first impression on Dune. Then, you can fill the info gaps with the TV miniseries.

      Its probably little consolation, but if youre not a smoker, then at least you get to a stage where you look pretty much the same age for the rest of your life... Up until Age 30, practically everytime I bought wine or liqour I got ID'd, 'cause I looked like the same twiggy 17 year old until then. But by the time I was 40, I LOOKED 40
      Point is I'll never pass for "30" again. But Im turning 50 this year. God willing if I stay active & keep eating my vegetables I can look "50" until Im 70 or 75
      ...And whoever says "40 is the the new 20" is full of sh**. Dont get me wrong- - Im not putting her down. Not at all. Shes a total fox 🦊💕💕 Cindy Crawford may have the youngest looking skin, but at 52 she still looks 45 to me. Theres just no hiding it. Brooke Shields & Melissa Gilbert are also good examples of 50+ with healthy young-looking skin, but its young skin on a person thats clearly 50+ 😍😍

    lol.. i know what you mean.. and Das Boot is a very long movie!! He is one of director David Lynch's favoured ensemble actors, he even has a small and rather bizzare part in 'Twin Peaks' as a tall dwarf in a dream sequence.

    The thing that always bug me about this scene is this; security protocol is paranoid and tight enough to jump over the imperial ecologist like Gurney did, but they care little of putting Duke and heir in the same fragile aerial transport for a "rutinary" inspection when they know the planet is riddled with harkonen threats, seems a bit off if you ask me.

      Well also remember what Gurney said "This is an unlisted flight" that way the Harkonnen's wouldn't know he's out there. But yes like the other who replied in the book there was escorts which would've made more sense but then again hardly anything of this film makes sense

    For the record, 300 kelvin is only about 80 F, or 27 C. Warm, but not HOT by any means. Once they clear the wall though, YEESH. Jumps to almost boiling.
