      Yup. It makes Thanksgiving better too. Things like pumpkin pie and stuffing are some of people's favorite foods but they only eat it 1/2 days of the year and it makes it that much better. So why do you need to have burgers/pizza/ice cream/fried chicken every week to be happy/satisfied? Limiting those things make them so much more pleasurable. A good scoop of gelato at the beach (with a healthy body) is so much more pleasurable than if you are downing a pint of Ben and Jerry's every weekend.

      @@TheGreektrojan Completely agree. I love a beer, so I get a beer subscription with 8 beers a month. Have one on a Friday evening, one on a Saturday evening. It's a nice treat to look forward to, and doesn't affect my calories for the week. Managing to lose 2lbs/week while keeping them.

      But over the course of a week that is 10+ scoops of protein. His diet makes sense if he wants to stay a certain size. If he wanted to put on more mass then those 12 scoops would make a difference of a couple extra pounds of mass. Simple equation the more you eat the bigger you'll be. At some point you are just adding fat but his current diet does limit his capability for "sick gains". Which, of course, is his decision. I'm sure if Alan wanted to get bigger he would eat more.

    The “it’s okay to be hungry” has helped me so much. It helped me lose weight when I first started to lose weight 4 years ago, and helps me now as I try to get “lean”

    All those bodybuilding articles out there will tell you to maximize every meal, never be hungry, and take all the supplements to build or maintain muscle. They just can't accept the fact that being hungry is alright like you said.

      The thing about those articles is that they aren't actually targeted for the normal guy who just wants to lose weight or gain muscle even if they are advertised towards that demographic. They're usually based off high level performing individuals i.e. pro powerlifters and bodybuilders where what they eat and how they build and maintain muscle mass is their job it's how they earn money so the devil is in the details of how they do so because that's their job and they gotta do it as best and efficient as possible.
      But for the regular joe, like what Alan said 35g of protein under isn't going to kill your gains. You don't really have to hit things to the calorie or to the exact gram to see results. Eat enough(be it deficit or surplus depending on your goals), eat properly(balance of macros and fruits and veggies), and keep general track of your food and performance in the gym and be C O N S I S T E N T which is the actual deciding factor of seeing results.

    Great stuff. Particularly liked the discussion about the mental aspect of diet. Keeping busy and focused on activities in front of you keeps normal hunger in the background and keeps scheduled meals on track. If you're just sitting around with nothing to do then snacking happens.

      @@GT-cl6ez It doesnt matter at all, i had prejudice about this and i found out on myself that its all bro science. I was competing in heavy weight judo division, after many injuries i couldnt take it anymore so i decided to drop from 100+ division to 90kg. Diets are hard for me eating less makes me angry so i decided to fast every other day, its easier for me to eat nothing at all then eat like a bird. I droped on scale and i didnt lose much strenght my gym PRs are identical now on 95kg as they were when i was 124kg. So "must eat tons of protein every day!!!!"" is "not true and i firmly believe now that its invented by the people who want to sell you protein shakes...

      @@lalithrockz yeah, it probably is, because it's based on lean mass, not total mass, and Alan's lean mass is probably about 165lbs. But I still think it's irresponsible of him to tell his followers who look to him for guidance that it wouldn't make a difference being 35g of protein down every single day. He only said all that because he was emotional about being asked about his protein intake.
      And yeah of course it doesn't need to match carbs. For me that would be 500g of protein 😂

    I usually take like 42 shakers with one scoop of proteinpowder in each with me to the gym, and after each set I mix and jug one of them down. I think it helps to keep my rests between sets consistently above ten minutes, helps with hydration as the protein helps the 21 litres of water to be properly ingested, and also covers like one meals worth of my daily protein intake. So it's not just about protein there are multiple upsides to it.

    I really liked the hunger segment.
    It's something I had to really work on after being unemployed for a while and then getting a physical job. After some mindset changes, I easily lost some excessive fat.

      I've tried intermitent fasting but I cannot sustain myself without massive calorie intake at work. I walk-run 2 marathons a week and physically push,pull and sometimes lift 50000kg of mass each week. I fast I fall, literally...

    My diet consist of 100% protein which I take a scoop and a half at a time, every half an hour. I do this all day and all night. I am so fucking jacked and stacked that people call me The Tyre.

    The rant you made about hunger was super relatable. I spent my childhood well fed, but I never felt satiated until I was 22 when my metabolism slowed. It felt so weird to me that even after gorging my face with a meal that made me feel like my stomach would pop, I still felt hunger. It was a depressing thought that I could never feel full. I have a much healthier metabolism and diet that I now feel full after much less.. I do think it’s a poor feedback to confirm that you are eating correctly.

    Alan is probably one of the only TH-camrs who follows the facts and is an eternal student of strength and conditioning. He’s not stuck in a single paradigm like many are. I don’t always agree with everything he says but it all comes from a place of integrity, consistent curiosity and a sense of mastery.

      My dog does the same thing. Leaves his food all day and once he gets ahold of something(fallen food) he then goes and eats.

      Yes, the feeling of hunger is due to the hormones leptine and ghreline.
      It can be misleading and eating can give you more hunger. Or you can be hungry, and after a while, forget you were hungry

Its all due to weight loss thats why he lost strength and probably doesn't have as much energy in reserve. If that was the case I'd be slamming scoops of protein every 10 minutes at the gym.

    P.S. I eat 'low protein' (around 135 g a day at 180-190 lbs bodyweight) too, and have been for 6 months as to avoid digestive stress. Yesterday I just smashed a 225lb PR for the Clean & Press. I don't think it matters.

      I always heard the 1 gram per bodyweight for protein but I also heard somewhere about 1 gram per Lean bodyweight. Like if I weighed 200lbs but lean weight might be 170lbs

      The extra cholesterol you would get could be easily processed and used if people would MOVE. Walk, hike, train, etc. People are so damn lazy these days their cholesterol is way up because they don't use what they eat and allow it to clog up their arteries. I would never waste eggs by eating them with just the whites. Whole everything. Milk, eggs, grains, meats, fats, etc. Don't be scared of food.

      Egg white is amazing when you're in a caloric deficit though. I'll usually add them to a couple of whole eggs in an omelette.

      @@aidanc3461 Saturated fats, cooking oils, dairy and red meat raise "bad" cholesterol way more than eggs do, as substantiated by numerous studies over the years. Eggs do not contribute to bad cholesterol the way these foods do. Eggs raise HDL, the good cholesterol, with next to no raise in LDL cholesterol for 70% of people studies have been conducted on. Add to this the fact that cholesterol is not a foreign substance but rather a substance our livers naturally produce that is required for the normal functioning of the body. If your diet has a higher intake of cholesterol your liver compensates by producing less. Adding 1-2 eggs to your per day diet will not make you drop dead in 2 weeks. Obviously, like every other food, consuming too much wil be detrimental to health. Too much of any hormone, enzyme, statin or even oxygen in your blood can cause problems. Cholesterol is just like any other substance.

    Regarding caffeine and migraines...I have suffered migraines for years. I used to think that mine were associated with caffeine, but experimentation proved that wrong. It turns out that I was sensitive to big barometric pressure changes. I discovered only in the last year that too many carbs aided those migraines. I went keto, maintained my normal 300mg of caffeine a day, and my migraines all but disappeared. Now, when a big storm is coming, the migraines are a tenth of the pain they used to be. In my particular case, glucose and too much of it was the enemy. My pop is sugar-free and I stay under 100g of carbs a day and things have been much improved.

      You were more than likely consuming junk carbs or carbs that don't agree with your body. I can eat white rice and my body loves it. In fact I feel it rev up my metabolism... but white potatoes my body hates... I get that shitty carb crash when I eat them... sometimes it a very specific plant toxin or plant oil that is the root of the problem.

    .8 grams protein per pound bw is already a safe margin above what you need to maximize MPS for most people.
    That's 160 grams for 200lbs bw
    I'm 200lbs, and i get about 180 grams protein a day, but that's just how it works out.
    Some of that is PB, which isn't the highest quality amino profile, so i somewhat discount that portion.

      Right. Science shows that amount is like 99% of the effect or something super close. The 1g/lb is just to easy a number for people to give up, even on a cut. .8/lb of high quality protein (which Alan is eating) is already doing the work and I'd much rather be eating the way he is than eating all the protein hacked "anabolic" recipes peddled out there.

    Carbs are protein sparing, and you're eating damn near 1g protein per lb of lbm. People like to regurgitate info they see online without gaining a deeper understanding of it

      Exactly. The whole point of high protein diets is to feel satisfied and reduce muscle loss while in a deficit, because some of the protein is being used as fuel. If you're not in a deficit, then there's no muscle sparing benefit to eating the extra protein, since you have plenty of energy without breaking down dietary proteins.
      I still prefer it sometimes for the satiety, though.

    Interesting about the caffeine! I was drinking coffee all day long, and was having the same problem. I also noticed my energy level was dropping dramatically, to the point I thought I needed to get my testosterone checked. I cut back to a single cup, only in the morning, and my energy came back and migraines went away.

    hunger is a habit our body has cause it likes routine, your body releases a hormone called "ghrelin" around your normal meal times which causes hunger but it lowers over time

    The section on hunger was super interesting and really helped me understand eating less. I get very caught up in satisfying my hunger immediately, but I like the idea of just not doing so. I am sure it becomes easier the more practice you get. Thanks for the content, the whole video was very informative and interesting.

    So true about caffiene. Started doing it in the Marines as well as a way to function better and got hooked on energy drinks. Wish I hadn't.

      Yeah, I'm the same way. I think it just depends on the person but I very rarely feel the need to eat outside of meals. When I do it's usually just a protien shake to get some missed protein in. I think it might be more common in people who have lost 50+ lbs over a shortish period. As you kind of train your body to ignore hunger signals when not necessary. I lost about 80lbs 2 years ago and to this day I don't mind feeling "not full" is how I put it. Like not full but also not starving. 2 years ago I would have said I was hungry at that point and had a snack. Now it just doesn't register at all. I also just don't enjoy eating all the time either. Even when I was fat I only ate x2 a day. But. Everyone is different so who knows.

      @@jayn8392 Yeah. I'm a person who has a condition that restricts how much I can eat in a meal. That somewhat forces me to snack. Everyone is different. If I tried to eat a third of my daily calories per meal with drinks I would get incredibly nauseous. I call it eating like a hobbit.

      @@urgamecshk oh bullshit. Personally, I just don't find big meals all that filling. Eg an 800 cal meal is only going to feel slightly more satiating to me than a 400 cal meal, meaning that I start feeling hungry again around about the same time (or like one hour later, max). This makes it a lot harder to stay within my daily calorie budget. With snacking, I can space out the calories more evenly so that I don't feel hungry.
      It's okay, you don't have to thank me, but I know I've taught you something :)

    About the protein requirements:
    TL;DR: He is eating more than enough protein right now, as supported by science, just less than most people tend to by common convention.
    Right now Alan is sitting at about .825 g protein/lb bodyweight.
    The typical benchmark that people quote for protein requirements is about 1 g/lb bodyweight, which is just an easy number to quote. It doesn't take into account body composition or whether you're in a surplus or deficit. Eric Helms actually did a video a few years back explaining how effective muscle growth can be supported by as low as .7 g/lb (it's been a while since I read the study he quoted but I believe that it assumes a caloric surplus). Of course, for muscle maintenance in a caloric deficit you would want to eat more protein than when in bulk, but the exact number of how much he should be eating is impossible for us to predict due to individuality.

      Science is also repeatedly late to the party behind bro science too lol. Used to be 20 g per meal max cuz science, but I’ve read a study where 70 g a protein was more anabolic than 35g I believe. And they didn’t know the upper limit.
      Many pro bodybuilders get /got 2 G protein/ lb. it’s interesting.

      1g/1lb is also a good range for weightless due to the satiety from protein and the thermic effect. So anyone in a deficit it can be beneficial to eat more meat/protein.

      Well, when he's walking 18k+ steps a day AND doing intense training every day... yeah... 3000 calories is very low. For him, walking 1 mile is like 100 calories burned, and he's also burning hundreds more during training... so again, yes, he's UNDEReating calories....
