Bill Ward is one of the greats. Both heavy and subtil. And very jazzy. He's got the "swing". He always play "for the song", and accentuate both Ozzy as well as the guitar licks from Tony. Together with bassist Geezer they formed one of the most effective rytm sections in our time.

Bill is more influential than 'great'. Sabbath were too underground and controversial back in the day for the critics to realise what a brilliant musician he was. Hell of a band.

I saw them on one of the concert shows back in the mid-seventies, and I've been hooked ever since. I never got to see them live, but have every album they put out. Ozzy's solo and the many Black Sabbath incarnations. Just love it all.
Back in my day we either had to have a stereo or 8-track player in your car. I remember driving to work and blasting Black Sabbath from the 8-track player in my Camaro 🔥🔥🔥❤️☮️👵🏼
It sounds like the studio version because they recorded this entire album in 2-3 days live in the studio. They were all that good at what they did. The drums and bass rhythm section can make or break a band. Geezer on bass and Bill on drums were unstoppable. Tiny Iomi left his job to be full time with the band. His mother had him go back to finish his shift and he accidentally cut his finger tips off. He made thimbles for his fingers, used lighter strings and something else (I’m not a musician and I’m just repeating what I’ve heard). That lead to their unique sound.
For me, I would easily put Bill Ward up there with John Bonham, they would have known each other, they were both from Birmingham and that city's rock scene. Sabbath's musicianship tended to get overlooked, for some reason it wasn't, at the time, as appreciated as Led Zeppelin's was and tended to be considered not as subtle or sophisticated. I never felt so, it was just different, but Sabbath certainly had a more primal effect and more energy.
My absolute favorite group in the 70's , my fav song is "paranoid" , 'happiness I cannot feel and love to me is so unreal'...Ozzy did great collab with Lita Ford called "close my eyes forever "!, great song!! Please check out!!

The version they play at the concert “the end” is a tear jerker . The whole crowd chanting the lyrics then that last epic solo everyone in the whole crowd was balling their eyes out. Very powerful moment. It was the very last time theyll play those songs

Before they hit it big, he was working in a factory - last day on the job - and an industrial accident cost him the tips of two of his fingers! He was despondent, thinking he might never play again, but he actually fashioned his own prosthetic fingertips from a melted dish detergent bottle. True story! One of my all-time musical heroes for his bravery.

Who is better doesn't exist, because they have different styles and strong points, then is a matter of taste... is relative, like guitar players, depending on the band they will do what is needed, not necessary they will show all their skills...some people focus on individual level at some point, others do all for the team not showing of... Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Eloy Casagrande...etc ... they are all different drummers but the best of what they do.
The sound of the Sabbath album doesn't give justice to Bill Ward fantastic drumming . "Sabotage" is the album where you can hear it fully . Check tracks like "Symptom of the Universe".
My top 5 is Peart, Ward, Bonham, Moon, Paice. It's so hard to put a number on who is the best with Peart, Ward and Bonham to me. All 3 of them were so damn good, it's hard to break it all down and what these guys bring to the table, most guys would kill for, ha
To me he is the best, and that's saying a lot, when you consider ho great Peart, Bonham, and Moon were, along with the others you can put in your top ten

You need to specify ROCK/metal drummers. Otherwise, you’ll get jazz drummers included. A very different animal. I would put Ward in top 20 rock drummers, easily. Keith Moon, John Bonham, Ian Paice, Neal Peart, Phil Collins, Steve Gadd, Michael Lee, Lars Ulrich…..a dozen others..
One of the great live performances for sure. Also the sound quality is insane for 1970 in a club in paris. It's a shame the bass is a bit low in the mix since Geezer Butler is kicking ass too but you really have to listen for it. Tony had his fingers cut off too in an industrial accident so he's playing with homemade plastic finger tips. Bill Ward is kick ass .. him and Neil Peart are my top 2. But a measure of a good band is when it's better live then it is in the studio The whole live in Paris 1970 recording is freaking amazing. At the same time another great one from 1970 is Chicago live at Tanglewood .. 65 or 6 to 4 being among the best but again.. the whole show is amazing. every musician in this band is considered a great in their field of instruments, and dont sleep on the bass player, Geezer Butler arguably has better licks/riffs/bass lines than Toni in some songs.
Sabbath are awesome, but I think the years that Dio did lead vocals were the better years. But I love all of sabbaths stuff. Sabbath, deep purple, zeppelin were the pioneers of heavy metal. I think sabbath were one of the first bands to use double bass drums which give their music a heavier deeper bass sound. You should check out Australian legend John Farnham, with over 5 decades of great Aussie music, in many genres.
Thing about this song, is it feels so very Jimi Hendrix to me, especially with what Tony Iommi is doing on it. Just one more step dirtier. Jimi passed only 2 years before this came out, so it's not a huge reach to theorize that he was a huge influence on early Sabbath. And yeah, Bill Ward eats that whole drum kit on this one.
The last verse played here was the original verse before they changed it. The original song was more santantic themed and morphed into more of an anti-war song which was more marketable. The last verse on the album was about the merchants of war going to hell and getting what they deserved.
My opinion 1, is Bozo 2. Keith Moon 3, Neil 4th has to be Tommy Rich as far as skill he was amazing but he more Big band and Jazz as far as rock Bill Ward Yes Neil from Rush is great but he is surrounded by drums the others play way smaller kits!
