Chester wrote the lyrics to this song just after getting out of rehab for addiction to drugs and alcohol. This song is about what he went through mentally during and after his divorce from his first wife Samantha. Chester went through a very dark time at that point and didn't know if he wanted to stay alive anymore. It was his bandmates and friends who helped him to go to rehab to get his life back on track for his children and to continue to do what he loved doing. The fans also helped him to realize he made the right decision to get help for his addiction issues.
Chester was always open about his struggles with depression and addiction to help others hopefully not follow in his foot steps. He was more open about his struggles than most people are who dealt with the same problems. After his passing the fans were there for the other bandmembers and for each other. No one knew just how bad it was for Chester because he only showed what he wanted everyone else to see and know about his struggles in life.

Thank you so much for reacting to this concert! It was amazing seeing you in awe of his energy in the beginning, knowing what was to come in the performance. Chester always seemed to really want to give it his all.
The scream where he goes "Put me out of my fucking miseryyyyyyyyyyy" is one continuous 17 second scream on the record, but for live performances, he broke it into two screams with a quick breath between; and he beat himself up about that, because he wanted to be able to do it exactly as on the album, concert after concert. That's how dedicated and ambitious he was. He did perform the whole scream live a few times, to show that he could do it outside the studio.
His authenticity here is incredible. It's painful now to watch, knowing how he passed; it's hard not to think about how the thoughts he express here so emotionally, is probably how he felt at the end. But before that, the song was more comforting. Knowing that someone you look up to has been in your shoes and made it through can be really healing. That's one reason why his death hit so many people so hard.
Every day people choose life, choose to be compassionate to themselves, choose to bring joy to others and let joy into their heart, they are making Chester proud. He wanted that so much for other people. RIP to a sweetheart and a legend ❤
