This is my reaction to Things Dutch People DON'T Say
In this video I react to Dutch comedy by enjoying things that people from the Netherlands don't say and looking deeper at Netherlands culture. Knowing how direct Dutch people are makes this even funnier.

Us Belgians , specifically Flemish, and the Dutch have a friendly rivalry. Like between the scandinavians , or Aussies and Kiwis. The dutch are our closest relatives, our family and as such we tease and poke eachother all the time. But if an outsider does it, they will quickly find we close ranks in seconds. Only I am allowed to make fun of my brothers and sisters, its normal, we accept that its all good fun. Someone else better not try it tho😂. In my humble opinion what happened in 1830 was a huge mistake. 🤘🇧🇪❤️🇳🇱

  • @banina1836

Helmet: Hardly anyone wears helmets here & those that do either are sports cyclists or delivery drivers that have to obey company policy
Belgians: Flanders used to be a part of the Netherlands historically, but has developed it’s own culture being so close to the French linguistic border; they speak with a dialect (Vlaams) which is often seen as cutesy & most jokes are similar to “dumb blonde” jokes
Marriage: 50% of Dutch people age 25-35 are university educated (hbo & wo for Dutchies), which means that there’s a lot of pressure on “making it” before you seek a partnership. I’m a married person myself and when I handed out sweets at college, (tradition is to hand out food when you have your bday/something to celebrate) someone I didn’t know told me that I was “wasting my youth” for getting married early. I was 22, so by most country’s standards not that young; I’m 24 now.
Even if I mention being married now, people will ask you or assume you’re very religious because you’re under ~28. I don’t necessarily think the culture is fully anti-marriage, but home life and children are seen as far less important compared to education and job security. We don’t tend to flex with our jobs, but flexing with your educational level is very common; anything under an international level 6 degree is called “lowly” educated, though politicians are making steps to make trades and middle management education (level 4) more appealing again

    1. Even if you love Lamborghinis and are jealous, showing off wealth in this manner is uncool, so you’ll have to say things like “how antisocial” or “small penis”.
    2. Wearing a helmet on a bicycle is only for people under 8 or over 80. It’s really uncool. This may change, with fast ebikes and fatbikes accidents are increasing, and Dutch DO love safety.
    3. Lunch is France and many other countries is a big deal. In the Netherlands it’s a slice of bread with cheese. A quinoa salad as lunch is actually possible, but unlikely for a construction worker.
    4. Curtains are open, and the idea is that people can see that (at least the front room) of your house is neat and tidy. Also “I’ve got nothing to hide”. And it lets in daylight in a cloudy country. Staring inside is really impolite though. And it’s mainly a thing in Holland. In many other provinces they keep the blinders shut.
    5. Is no foam beer even a thing?
    6. We like appointments. Still, many people would welcome unexpected guest and say “the door is always open”. But still, a notice is usually preferred.
    6. We like jokes about belgians (and germans) and don’t think they’re offensive. The Belgians are friends, have a great sense of humour, and aren’t easily offended anyway.
Why does a Belgian always carry a knife when driving? -to cut corners.
There’s also the other way around: what’s Dutch tomato soup? A red plate with water.
    7. Red lights don’t apply to bicycles. At least not when no cars are close. The rules and laws are suggestions. Only problem is traffic fines are really high.
    8. Getting married is out of style? I don’t get this one. Plenty of people get married.
    9. Church visiting is on the decline. Still, many people visit, especially sunday morning.
    10. Your boss does not have authority. He can of course ask you to do certain work. He needs to ask politely. If someone says “of course, you’re the boss” it’s sarcastic.

And we'll never correct somebody who breaks the rules (Germans do!). 8. I don't get the married clip either.... 9. Church is not important in most people's lives. It is not done to leave a party for church next morning. 10. If we don't agree with our boss, we will argue with him.

But crossing over the sidewalk on an e-bike, fatbike or racing bike with a speed of at least 30km (ca. 20 miles) per hour, and regularly risking to crash into impaired, disabled, young or elder people... Bicycle helmets are for children who've not learned to keep their balance yet, anyone over the age of 8 or something does not need a helmet for a bicycle.
    - In 95% of the country bicycle lanes and roads are separated so you're never in any real danger
    - If an accident does happen the heavier vehicle is at fault on default (ie: car that hit cycle) so we all actively pay attention to 'lighter road users' because of that
    - We all ride or rode bikes, so we also know to be careful around them because of this
    - In the event a cycle comes up against the blind spot of a truck (which is rare with all the improvements about those blind spots, but sadly does happen a few times a year) then some styrofoam helmet is going to be entirely pointless.
So really, the decision we have to make is do we wanna look like a weirdo (adult with a kids helmet..) for essentially zero % added safety? or do we just leave the helmet in the store?
Turns out we mostly just shrug off the small chance of "danger" that the helmet wouldn't really do anything against anyway & most of us never wear a helmet, honestly probably most not even as kids, because most kids also think the bicycle helmets look dumb 😂

The video appears to be about what the Dutch don't do as much as it is about what we don't say. To summarise; car culture is marginal at best, the only ones who wear bicycle helmets are tourists and spandex wearing clip-in pedal cyclists (both types are deadly, keep clear), lunch typically consists of one or two basic sandwiches (e.g. cheese, ham or peanut butter), most people won't close their living room curtains out of fear the neighbours will think they have something to hide, you DO NOT show up unannounced at a friend's house, Belgians and Germans are often made fun of in jokes which is not considered discriminatory unlike jokes about certain other nationalities, cyclists (and pedestrians) ignoring a red light is not uncommon but telling them off is (except if you have the green and they are in your way, in that case you get to yell at them as much as you like), proposing is typically only done after about two years, less than half are church-goers and the ones that are would sooner skip church or go with a hangover than leave a party early. Hierarchy in the workplace does exist. A manager using the "I'm the boss" argument will earn themselves a HR meeting, but somehow "higher management says we need to do it" is perfectly fine and nobody will ever check if they really said that.

I think the Dutch and Belgians are way more friendly towards each other than the examples you mentioned.

We often tell jokes how dumb the Belgiums are. Meanwhile from my understanding Belgium makes jokes about the Dutch being stringy.
    One old joke I remember:
A Belgian and Dutch guy are talking about giant structures they build.
The Dutch guys tells the Belgian: We once made a giant bridge in the middle of the desert. Belgian: why build a bridge in the desert that is just stupid.
Dutch: maybe, the materials used could be used for other projects.
Belgian: why don't you just remove the bridge, so u can use the materials again?
Dutch: We would like to....but there a lot of Belgiums fishing on it.

What's the cause of World War III?
    The Belgians understanding our jokes.
Btw, they also have a new traffic sign: "End of rondabout" (rotondes, those circular things connecting roads that are just too awesome, like your video btw 😉, what do you call them, roundabouts?).
I used to have a paper route in my teens and the younger brother of a former classmate always met up with me while on my paper route and he told me countless jokes in that time, lol. Btw, do you know how copper wire was invented? Two Dutchmen fighting over a guilder.

The Dutch always joke about Belgians being ‘dumb’. F.i. a Dutchman and Belgian are dropped in a desert for a week and allowed to bring 1 thing. The Dutchmen brings a huge watertank so he won’t go thirsty. The Belgian guy brings a car door. The Dutchman is flabbergasted: “Why on earth would you bring a car door to the desert?” The Belgian says: “Amai (is what they say in Belgium, very funny to us), it gets hot here in the desert. Now at least with the car door with me, I can open a window!” I never said our jokes about the Belgians were terribly good 😂. Belgians on the other hand always jokes about Dutch people being stingy. But I dont’t know any of those bcs I simply don’t want to hear them 😌.
