When I was in school, English was a compulsory education, so I chose German education and yes, I understand and grasp many other languages, but unfortunately I don't speak them.

From my experience, learning English was almost as fluent as learning Dutch as a native. We are being exposed to the English language through tv shows, songs & movies. But I mostly learned through reading books and playing video games. I grew up with Harry Potter, and the Dutch translations always followed a little bit later than the English original books. So I just switched to the English books straight away. And of course, we learn English at school from the earliest classes. That continues all the way to university.

When I was young, I always watched "The DJ Kat Show" and "Fun Factory" on sky channel, which had no subtitles. I learned how to speak English from watching Transformers cartoons and could speak and understand English when I was 6 or 7. Having that channel with all of the cartoons without subtitles at a young age really helped me to understand the language quickly and once I learned more about the language at school I was able to speak it fluently.

Albert Heijn is one of the biggest Supermarket chain in the Netherlands yes, but I not think it's the most popular Supermarket, for example it also is the most expensive one. The quality is good, but I rather go to a other supermarket that is more popular in my region the quality also is good but more cheap than the Albert Heijn. My favorites supermarkets chains are Dirk, Hoogvliet and Jumbo. Dirk is a supermarket you see the most in my region I think, and it's not to expensive, so this is the one I go to most often. The Hoogvliet and Jumbo are also very popular here, but in my region you must go to the bigger cities for them, in my district you nog have them. The Albert Heijn you have in my district, but I only go there for few things because most is to expensive there compering with other supermarkets in this region.

Our films and foreign programs on TV are in English and we do have subtitles not like in Germany, a German voice over, so you learn it before you go to school

English is very close to Dutch, I learned most of it from tv before I learned it in school. I learned more German from tv though as I'm old. Dubbed Bonanza, lol. But yeah we learned German AND English from tv. However, most Dutch people overestimate their ability to speak English.

On TV here, as everywhere else, there are lots of English and American films and series. In the Netherlands everything is subtitled, but in Germany - at least when I was growing up and watched German tv sometimes - everything was dubbed. You'll hear John Wayne speek German, as well as German speaking Indians. That's not helpful when you want to learn a language. So in addition to our schools, you can also - and even earlier - learn English (or French, German, Italian) from tv. The school will know what your main invluence was though ... at my English exam I was told I spoke English with an American accent.... Speaking English with others help to improve your language of course, but when the other has an accent like the Indian gentleman at the end, or a Scot (?) like yourself it may be a problem for some to immediately understand what you're saying. But most have the drive to want to talk English, so after a while it will work.

Perfect English was learned watching cartoons in their original version with Dutch subtitles. Because you want to follow and understand, the translation knob is activated. Not a single teacher could replace this capability. Today is totally different with all orignal versions dissapearing in favor of fully translated cartoon shows.

167 cm Dutch man, yes that's right a dutchie of dwarven stock. I definitely notice it in everyday life, like the toilets, mirrors are usually hung so high that i can barely see from bellybutton and up only. Also pants are always way to long, gotta get em shortened. but no need to be insecure about height imo, cuz cmon it's not like you choose what height you get. also i always have leg space when seated in public transport, and people tend to treat you nicer somehow when you're smaller than them for some reason i've noticed. So plenty of pro's as well to being short. i don't like asking for help with reaching stuff tho, unless absolutely necessary. I usually climb my way up to stuff to reach it which always gets a laugh out of people who see it happen haha.

I think your accent is very easy to understand. I have a lot of UK customers and drivers on the phone for work and occasionally Scottish as well, some Brits are a challenge because of their accent 😅

I learned my first English sentences when i was 6 and on Saturday mornings i'd watch James Bond movies and my favorite film, The Longest day. They where subtitled. Those were VHS-tapes, and in the mid-nineties.

Well it's simple, almost every film is subtitled in the Netherlands, which makes it easy for children to learn English. In almost all other European countries, films are spoken in their own language. I myself learned English from TV by watching movies. When I was in primary school you NO longer got foreign languages ​​one of my sisters did get French but it was abolished afterwards.

I started to learn in the 7th grade. And the watching TV series, movies, gradually dismissig dutch subtitles, reading english books...etc. English has become my 2nd language.

I taught myself English through subtiled cartoons. And then met an american kid who had dutch grandparents and was visiting for Christmas. That week we spend so much time together i spoke pretty fluent (Kid) English before I even got it at school lol.

I learned dutch, english, german, french at school. We also use subtitles for movies, tv shows so we can read and hear those foreign languages and learn them more easily. So i can read and speak English, German rather fluently and I know enough french to stay alive in that country.

I Learned English at the last two years of primary school and in secondary school and youtube and Spotify( i got my phone when i went to secondary school) We even have words that we call leenwoorden and that means words from other languages

Back in 1984 or 1985 (yes i'm that old , i was 5 or 6 at the time) i always watched "Fun Factory" on Skychannel (i think later on it became BBC) . i watched cartoons like Transformers , He-man , G.I.Joe , Dennis the Menace , inspector Gadget , Jace and the wheeled warriors ect ect ect... and it was all in English without subs offcourse . That's how i learned English. I'm not as fluent as i used to be , but i can still manage. Edit.... when my kids where younger , we also had a lot of dubbed cartoons and tv shows , but i always insisted that they watched the stuff in English with subs. And it payed off , my daughter recently graduated with a A+ in English . And my son also has very good grades for English.

I think it also has something to do with watching English and American TV series/shows in their native language, aka English, has something to do with it. We never lipsynced them in our own language like the Germans did/do. And it's a language we learn in schools at a young age, not so much other languages, at least not when I was young. And yes, trade also has something to do with it, but not for the average person. EDIT I wrote that before watching it to the end, and people said also what I wrote; Not dubbing forgain films/movies/TV-shows, but using subtitles.

I think the teaching has a lot to do with it. I get the impression that in France, for example, they are really hard on pronunciation, to the extent that the poor kids are terrified to open their mouths, and lack confidence in their fluency. I've found that a lot of French people understand a fair amount of English, but deny being able to speak it! But yes, French isn't a Germanic language, which adds to their difficulty. I am always impressed by the fluency of the Dutch.

Try to convince a friend in Italy to learn English, he only knows Italian and for business it’s good to learn English as well. I now that in India they try to teach English at every school, because you can go all over the world 🌎

First of all, don't shit on your Scottish accent - I went to Greenock once, and I spoke to a local there that was so incomprehensible in his dialect that other locals couldn't even help me out. They didn't understand him either. On English comprehension within the Netherlands - I think it goes beyond school learning from a young age and dubbed TV shows. Dutch education in the Dutch language is soulless. We are mainly taught to read and write correctly, and reading comprehension. We aren't taught in such a way that we are meant to love the Dutch language. Whenever we read Dutch fantasy words such as "magic" and "wizard" sound so incredibly old-fashioned and dull that I wouldn't even know how to start marketing adult fantasy. While YA is a genre that's getting big in English, I can't say I know of any Dutch authors in that niche market - while that age is a very important time to keep your love of reading. Also as a fanfic afficionado - many of my favourite mangas and video games don't even have official Dutch translations. Do you have any idea how incredibly weird it is to write interactions between characters in Dutch with all their catchphrases and everything when you only know them to communicate in English? It'd be like knowing a series with subtitles and suddenly listening to dubs. It's off putting. And I can't be the only one that thinks like that. Archiveofourown.org is huge, and plenty of Dutch friends go there as well for their fanfic needs. But as of writing this, if I search with the ONLY criteria being the language filled in as "Nederlands" I get a measly "653 Found". If I do the same search for German (Deutsch), I get 28,071 found. English? 11,907,319 Found. This is representative for basically everything on the internet, if you want to reach people or you want to consume content; you switch to a different language, because the Dutch internet is basically non-existent out of social media and web fronts of companies. The fresh orange juice machine. We've used it a few times and it's good (always better than the pre-packaged juice), but you can get more juice from 1 orange at home with either a hand juicer or a powered one. So most people just do that when they want fresh juice. The machine was also out of order half the time with some problem or other, so they ended up removing it from our local supermarket eventually.

The real reason is a bit complex. The business reason is valid, but the reason why it is being tought from a young age is a polital choice to make it obligatory. Also, it is seen as a cool language and dutch a bit boring. That is why a lot of english words and phrases are mingled into dutch, especialy by jounger people. Also english curse worrds are common used. And in the netherlands people are constantly surrounded by english in music, advertisement, and tv were foreighn languages are subtitled instead of dubt over with dutch voices. There is also not much pride in speaking dutch, the native tongue, like for instant the french and german people have. I think that those are the main reasons

I learned it through videogames, since games rarely get translated to dutch. Also cartoon network and music. And of course seeing the internet taking shape since the mid ninetees and being on the internet as a kid I just had to learn it.

Movies and series aren't dubbed; we all hear English every day. Same with music. Most of our music is in English. There are Dutch songs of course, but they're a minority on an average playlist. Commercials contain a lot of English nowadays, as do headlines in magazines. Lots of Dutch words are replaced by English words in such a way that it almost seems a Dutch word by now and you can use it in a regular conversation. So the Dutch are exposed to English 24/7.

They don't !!!! Am always embarrassed when I hear the Dutch speak English. Or any other language. They have horrible accents.

You mentioned Colonialism. Even in that case, England, Portugal, Spain,.. all the big powers did colonialosm to conquer land. We (the Dutch) did it primarily for trade-routes.

I’m Dutch. In primary school I had 1 year English and 1 year French. In secondary school I had to learn 4 languages: English, French, German and Dutch of course. What was very helpful was the tv. Movies and tv shows in all these languages, but mostly English helped me to keep up my language skills. You hear the language spoken but with subtitles in Dutch. My kids could communicate in English before they had this subject at school. Nowadays I like to read books in their original language because there is so much lost in the translation.

It’s about the breathing. Dutch and English are alike in that regard, the Latin languages are very different, hence the heavier accents.

Swearing with diseases is quite common in my hometown, Rotterdam. Typhoid (tieft op), pleurisy (pleurt op), or TBC (krijg de tering). All diseases western society has more or less overcome.
