      A lot of people were riding with MGK when TTMD came out, most were really hyped about him helping bring pop-punk back to the mainstream, i mean it hit #1 on the Billboard 200. I think him dissing Slipknot is where a majority of the hate started.

    • @dan182v
      @dan182v 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DCT97 yeah exactly😭 the thing is if you look at the actual timeline of stuff that happened it went like this. Corey refused the offer to be on his ttmd album and then he went on an interview bashing mgk when mgk thought they we're all cool. Then, mgk talks smack about slipknot and only then people started to react and say that mgk stsrted the whole beef.

  • @FellerCleetus

    MGK has always blended hiphop and rock music. Back in the day he'd have a mohawk and play warped tour just as a rapper. But he'd always cover classic punk rock songs because he grew up on that music. Only problem was the industry didn't let him have control. This album proved that he can do both and his new album Mainstream Sellout is more of the same blended stuff he's always been good at!

    • @medicalcigarett
      @medicalcigarett 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes! It’s wild to me anyone acts like MGK having any punk/rock/etc. influence is a newer thing or switching genres but if they were to go back to General Admission (and probably even earlier music, IIRC), they’d find quite frequent references to Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, etc. his whole career has been filled with his rock and punk influences and yet so many people are so ready to jump on the MGK-hate-bandwagon that they ignore that he’s not fully switched genres but rather always experimenting and evolving with his sound; that he was never bullied out of any genres or gave up on them - that rap and hiphop are forever a part of what makes MGK who he is just as much as punk/rock/etc. have made MGK who he is no matter what his sound is. Being able to make great music in multiple genres only proves how great of an artist he is.

    So fucking happy you pointed out how Mod Sun came up with the Bloody Valentine lyric. I saw that video a few months back and though, "this is rock/punk history!!! How is no one talking about this? 20 years from now that clip will be used as the very moment it was, caught on tape!!!" I coudl just see it at the Rock Hall as an exhibit to enjoy and realize, "what a moment caught in time!!"

    I love this genre so much and I'm glad to see it getting popular. Another artist that's kinda important to mention is Siiickbrain who was on Maggie Lindemann's GASLIGHT! and has also done two others with her. She leans more toward screaming music, but her song Too Bizarre with Skrillex and Swae Lee is worth a listen too. Not to mention, she's also done a song with willow.

    Pop Punk never died, Waterparks, Neck Deep, All Time Low were all keeping the scene alive in all honesty. Travis Barker deserves all the credit for the new life blown into it though with all the production work he’s been doing. KennyHoopla, POORSTACY, and a lot of the others are fucking amazing. Tickets going #1 after going at Em's neck was crazy, an Tickets was the best pop punk album in what 12 years. But he did feed into the Success becoming a mix of egomaniac an goofy fun loving guy his fans loved him for, going to tent parties after shows smoking, eating an being that down to earthish rockstar. This happens to alot if not all super stars, an now he's reached the top feeling himself like Kanye an he will always keep chasing that shot in the arm of that perfect complete album he once had chasing it instead of moving on. But for two years he just kept putting out amazing music all through Covid when the world needed a Distraction From reality. Big fan.

    Absolutely amazing video essay, man. As a fellow observer of this new era pop punk, I totally agree with all of these, however, I feel like this new era does have diminishing returns imo. While it does sound fresh and new, I find that it all can sound samey to me especially seeing the “ft. travis barker” label. It kinda sounds similar production-wise and in the riffs and beats. I think this new era has a ton of potential, which it has shown time and time again, but like you said in the last few seconds of the video, it doesnt need Travis Barker or the same features. I feel like artists should come forward and experiment more with the new sound, and tbf, MGK has been collabing with artists like Kellin Quinn and Oli Sykes while also collabing with Lil Wayne, which is nice to see. I just wish it didnt have to have Travis Barker as a lifeline most of the time really. If it really wants to impress me and the rest of the already existing pop punk crowd, imo, it needs more of that spark and not for someone to light the fuse for them, ya feel?

    Hands down the best video about this revival! The nostalgia and also fresh sounds in pop punk are giving me life. It's so awesome getting to witness this revival. one of the few highlights of living in The After Times / plague era. Are you South Africans btw? Accents sound familiar 🤔

    My biggest question is how did bands like The Story So Far, State Champs, or Neck Deep get ignored by the upper industry?

    • @chaitradaggubati5799
      @chaitradaggubati5799 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i think this video is more about how pop punk/rock was revived in mainstream. so while the bands like those you mentioned were still making music, it was not mainstream.

    • @Silencex84
      @Silencex84 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@chaitradaggubati5799 I know that was the main point of the video and I do enjoy MGK's pop punk stuff and other new guys like Sueco, Kennyhoopla, and Jxdxn.
      Its just confusing to me how when those guys came up everyone is suddenly like "omg pop punk came back" when in reality pop punk never left, it was just ignored.
      Plus I feel the new generation of pop punk artists are more so inspired by Blink 182 or Fall Out Boy, but none of them will reference The Story So Far nor State Champs. Its like there was a blank spot in everyones memory banks and the 2010s pop punk bands some live in that blank spot.

    I’ll be on your page anytime you have something to say about this movement. I’ve been punk since before high school (17 years ago!) and I’m here for the new movement. Just five years ago I was sitting listening to blink and telling my husband I wished they’d come back and now we get this!!!! I’m 31 and I still wear all my black punk tees from high school. I’m finally not washed up, my 11 year old finally thinks I’m more legit now ha!

    Undoubtedly, I feel like pop-punk never died. This "new wave" feels unauthentic. I think that the 2000s nostalgia hit everyone during the pandemic. stereotypical (pop) punk fashion blew up on Tiktok Artists saw this and decided to cash in on it. My personal opinion on TTMDF; it is nothing we haven't already heard, it's reminiscent of any other pop-punk song out there. The mix of rap and rock was prevalent before this and I think Lil Peep did it better. Going pop-punk is a trend, we see it with Willow, Olivia Rodrigo, Maggie Linderman, Lil Huddy, etc... All artists who have had major rebranding done. Take Olivia Rodrigo, it's not an exaggeration to say that since she released "Drivers License" she has had a massive rebranding (fashionably, personality-wise, and musically). I personally think it's all a bluff that these artists (mainly MGK, Olivia Rodrigo, Willow) will do for another year or two then ditch. Also, MGK is a horrible person how the community hasn't shunned him is beyond me.

    Pop punk has actually been extrmely popular over the past 10 to 13 years. Why do people keep saying this? The wonder years, the story so far, neck deep, real friends. I could go on and on. All of a sudden some out of touch LA Gucci sweater wearing rappers fling on guitars and all of a sudden pop punk is back. Like what?

    • @bean_walker161
      @bean_walker161 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You clearly missed the point of this video entirely. This isn't about pop punk not having an existing following. It's about pop punk becoming mainstream again, which it hasn't been mainstream since pre 2009.
      Also, if you think MGK is some out of touch guy from LA, then you clearly know nothing about him either.

If it is your passion, just go for it, motivation finds its ethymology in movere, latin, meaning movement. What you gotta understand with this, is that motivation comes from movement. For example, hit the gym or the dance lesson once, it'll be easier to hit it next time. Just keep up with yourself : is that what you want ?
