Original Xbox Nexus 70mm Silent Fan Review + Installation

  • IMPORTANT: this fan does not move as much air as the stock fan at the same speeds. I highly recommend increasing the fan speed to at least 60%. It is still pretty quiet at this speed.
    This fan can be used as a drop-in replacement of the original Xbox fan and it does not require any modifications to the Xbox's case (like 80mm fans do). This video is an early review and installation guide. This video focuses on noise comparison and installation.

Tired of eating sweet potatoes alongside some protein protein source every lunch as a source of steady and slow release of glucose, haha. Kudos!

    I got this fan installed and put the fan speed at x3 instead of the default x1 fan speed in evox system settings.
    I also removed all the metal except the upper bit to fasten the fan to.
    Now it is quiet and it is also a few more degrees cooler.

    What is the temp difference? It doesn't sound like it moves as much air and being in a exhaust only config you need that pull. I have tried the Noctua and nope, no good, but recently tried a old AVC fan off a anthlon 64 heatsink and got better results with not much of a difference in noise.

    You can fit 80mm fans if you're up to a little cutting and carving with a Dremel tool. 80mm fan mods are a must for my modded XBOX's.
    Also, I cut away the shielding from the case to improve the fan flow by reducing obstruction. It helps with suppressing the fan noise as well.

    I have a Xbox Crystal limited edition from 2002 and the motherboard is completely different from standard versions. I had to cut some plastic from the Nexus' fan case, I had to bent a piece of the radiator and I had to modify the fan's plug (2-pin vs 3-pin). So sometimes it is not so easy.

    You ever do the fan speed test for cooling? You mentioned in another comment testing 60% vs the stock fan for cooling. Do you leave it at the stock fan curve or lock it to a fan speed?

    • @GoTeamScotch
      @GoTeamScotch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I played through Halo 1 for several hours over the course of a week or two and I tried leaving it at stock speeds once or twice but it got noticeably warm so I switched it back to 60% to be safe and left it there. It still sounds a little quieter than stock fans at normal speeds. For me, it's still worth the mod. I have XBMC set to auto control the fan speed depending on temps, so games run it at 60% while XBMC runs at less than 10 usually (whisper quiet while watching movies). On a stock Xbox with a stock CPU, it could probably stand to be set to lower than 60% but the CPU upgrade makes it put out more heat so 60% locked is safer from what I've found.

      @FireMrshlBill 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, thanks! Mine is still stock, cleaned it out and repasted the cpu/gpu last night, the fan is a little quieter but going to swap it with this fan. Will soft mod the Xbox next week since the HDD is sounding rough and I finally want to get around to soft modding and swapping HDD’s. Will see how stock speeds do, but will up the speeds if it gets too warm.

    • @FireMrshlBill
      @FireMrshlBill 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dillon Sykes That's odd. I ended up swapping for this fan and have had no issues with heat. Is your xbox modded/softmodded? If so check the fan speed set in that. Mine is running at whatever is stock and it never goes over 56C from gaming (usually in upper 30's to mid 40's at idle). That is also running games off of a modern WD Blue. I assume the DVD drive and an older hdd would be a little hotter, but not enough to overheat. So either something is wrong with that particular fan you got or there is some other issue (software if modded, blocked airflow when you reassembled, need to reapply your thermal paste again, etc.).

    • @blarbful
      @blarbful 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you run games with a custom fan speed? The Xbox BIOS forces the fan to run at 20% for games and it can only be changed whilst inside XBMC or another dashboard.

    I wish 70x25mm fans were more available, loads of older mATX PC cases are literally just the width of the ATX power supply, which means many of the exhaust fans are strange sizes, one of them being 70mm. I can get the cases for half the price of just this fan.

    The real question is how are the temperatures like is the fan moving a sufficient amount of air to keep the gpu and cpu cool

    • @GoTeamScotch
      @GoTeamScotch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually specifically avoided talking about temps because the Xbox I installed it into had a 1ghz CPU upgrade done to it, so my temps and fan settings would have been different than most people's. I do want to revisit this in a future video because it does indeed run hotter at stock fan speeds. This is why I usually recommend that people bump up fan speeds in their BIOS when using these or other aftermarket fans. I set mine to 70% during games (still pretty quiet) and "auto" when in XBMC (basically silent).

      I can say that temps at stock fan speeds are worse. The fan doesn't move the same volume of air at lower RPMs. I've used this fan on stock Xboxes and found that generally you should set it to about 50% fan speed to achieve comfortable temperatures. I set mine to Auto while in XBMC and 50% while in games.

      This video is a bit on the old side of things and I had intended on doing a follow-up that I never got around to doing. Silent fans tend to not move as much air as the stock Xbox fan. As a result, in order to keep temperatures under control it is wise to increase your fan speed. I usually have it set to 70% while running games and then while in XBMC, I let it handle fan speed automatically. The method to accomplish this varies depending on which BIOS you have.
