This is precisely what I'm having to do. Got to the back interior panel, looked at the rivets, went "Oh *bleep*", and came looking for info on how to deal with *that*. Not only do you provide that much needed info, but you detail the entire process such that I've no qualms about proceeding once I've picked up that tool. Very well done, sir!
THE DAMN HATCH HANDLE!!! Thanks for showing this. I'm on my second xB and the handle on this one id=s just now starting to flop. My first one broke a long time ago, but I wrecked it before I could fix it.
Perfect. Your video saved me big time. Thanks for including all details and especially for showing all the errors along the way... would've made those same mistakes and probably will find a way to create new errors along the way, anyways. Good stuff!
Ah the notorious xB hatch latch. I ended up super-gluing mine. I think the weather stripping around the hatch opening gets sticky if you don't open the hatch regularly and pulling it open requires more force than the latch can handle.
I hate those plastic rivets especially on bumpers. They're so easy to break and there's like 20 million of them on a bumper. Great video tho! Glad to see that you're back!
To everybody that still has one broken. On EBAY they have new ones with a metal bracket inside the the latch. It works real good. I have one. And it is great.
I love the xB I have one exactly the same year and color have the 5 speed too not sure if yours is but the one thing i hate is not having cruise control. Makes driving to work a bit of a hassle
Nice job on the handle but something tells me u might be having to tackle it again after that even weaker one breaks. Dont toss the old one. That back latch was definitely a job for JB Weld with a thicker reinforcement layer of JB Water Weld encompassing surface interior base of the piece & the base of screws. 1/2hr prep, cleaning & gluing minus the drying time, removal & install. That piece wouldn't be going anywhere after that. I'd also replace those plastic crap clips with screws. Fat black hex head ones if u could find them. Or paint them. Easy access & they'll look nice too.
u pop the rivet from the inside not out. the grooves on the rivets prevent them from coming out on the actual head. sooo u put the tool inside the cover where the grooves are at. by you pulling them out where the heads are at you are damaging them, u can see the hole creating on top of the head.
i actually remembered i needed to buy the rivets from this video. so i seen some on a app call wish, type in scion xb and just search threw them till u see the rivets. they actually have quite a few stuff original to the xb. i bought a rear wiper blade but the hole was to big and didn't stay on.
i ordered quite a few items from wish and geek app. so far i havent had a bad experience other than the part not showing up, they refund the money if it doesn't show up. also some times they take quite awhile to get to your home. most sellers are in china so its 2-3 weeks if not a hole month. some are actually very fast. soooo many good stuff for cheap price. i bought the batman, spiderman and autobots metal logo and slapped them on my hatch. im trying to get all the metal logos they have hahah. i have the autobot logo on my solo baric video but you can only see it less than a second.
On my hatch, I modified nylon rope (white color) to fit where the two screws go to the back license plate, that way I can use the rope vs the crap latch.
i changed mine just like you did and it broke again so i used gorilla glue and taped it down and 24 hrs later it was good as new. From then on i opened the hatch using a wooden shim or my key after i pressed the release and pried the hatch enough to get my finger under the hatch and then press again on the hatch release and lift with my hand where the key or shim was in. I only open the hatch only when absoloutely have to lol.
The center latch button is what quit for me. I have no idea if the switch broke or if something it’s connected to quit. It’s probably the electrical system.
Suggestions to anyone buying an old XB. DON'T yank the handle and, if you can, lift the latch with one hand, and the bottom of the hatch with the other at the same time. Of course, I have mine attached with JB Weld and also some black gorilla tape (car is dark blue). Love the car though, still have it in '24 with 181K miles.
After nearly 16 years of owning my xB, I think I may have broken the latch handle TODAY…My “door open” light was on, and I figured it was the rear hatch since I took something out earlier. For whatever reason, I pressed the handle to try to close the hatch -which I never do- and heard a cracking sound. I thought to myself, “aah f*@k!”, jiggled the handle and it felt a little looser on the side I pressed than the other side. So f*@k me…smh. P.s. I’m from Hawaii too…😷🤙🏼
@n0eLoL Just had my son change my clutch. I have changed the rear wheel hub, love how easy things are to maintain. .....what is the radio/stereo you have in your scion?
Actually just today I changed out my auto trans filter, pan gasket, and ATF. Super easy! The radio I currently have is an old Pioneer double din deck I purchased back in 2017 (FH-X700BT)
Did that say 1 liter? Of oil? Because I just did an oil change yesterday, and I had just under 1 L as well. No oil light either. Maybe 13k miles on that (synthetic)oil. I didn’t have any leaks, so it must of been burning it. Wtf 170k miles on mine. 2005
+Dylan Bill so far I only got footage for one episode but I think after next month I'll be working on the 86 again meaning more footage to hopefully build another episode

I have first gen '05 Xb that I got in '07 with just under 19K miles now going on 280K plus miles. It's a great little box!
I just searched what I needed and I gravitated towards this dudes video. Cool calm collective! I dig the whole thing man! Thanks
I just glued my latch handle back on with some ShoeGoo from walmart. Still holding after 2 years. Best glue you can buy.
its great coming back and watching some of your older videos :) i just picked up a XB , it was a one owner car too.
Make a series of videos bring back the XB!!
If your looking for more xb content make sure you look up my youtube channel wicked garage we are a xb videocast with new videos every other week

You're welcome! Always glad to share my exp 😁
The burp was a nice touch
My latch just snapped this morning. this is great video! Thank you!!

Great vid. I like the narration style.
thank you :)
Aloha, Glad to see a car enthusiast from Hawaii here.
Great Video! Thanks for sharing!

Adam Kruse I don't have it on mine either but here in Hawaii we don't have long enough roads to have the need for cruise control

Great advice friend, thanks. I too was pondering .75" of PC7 epoxy on the old latch fail area , maybe marine grade.
Saw a Hatch Latch on Ebay yesterday in WHITE. May take some digging.
Didn't know you could tow with an xB. Good to know. I have a 2013 .
technically you can.. but I try not to tow complete cars. The tow hitch was installed there to tow my Celica when it was just a rolling shell
Great video
Just discovered your channel, love it! Keep them coming.
You showed your license plate. Now someone will track you down and stalk you!!!!😂😂😂
Very enjoyable~! Nice camera dude!
Animus Verus lol thanks bud!
Yeah...I need to start doing better for my 2006. I want to keep it until I can get those classic car plates for it.
you can find the little push pins at faster supply stores. you probably have a local shop. also Amazon and eBay.
albert fishstix none of my local Auto stores had them. I still haven't bought any... I don't think I ever will lol
4:29 I could see that coming a mile away. Those things are in there solid. I experienced that taking off my hood liner.
8:01 Best movie ever!
Good to see another upload!
Lanks it's good to be back!

knownasgeeks thanks for the tip, do you happen to know where I can buy replacement rivets for it?
i actually remembered i needed to buy the rivets from this video. so i seen some on a app call wish, type in scion xb and just search threw them till u see the rivets. they actually have quite a few stuff original to the xb. i bought a rear wiper blade but the hole was to big and didn't stay on.
knownasgeeks wow.. there they are, how legit is this Wish app?
i ordered quite a few items from wish and geek app. so far i havent had a bad experience other than the part not showing up, they refund the money if it doesn't show up. also some times they take quite awhile to get to your home. most sellers are in china so its 2-3 weeks if not a hole month. some are actually very fast. soooo many good stuff for cheap price. i bought the batman, spiderman and autobots metal logo and slapped them on my hatch. im trying to get all the metal logos they have hahah. i have the autobot logo on my solo baric video but you can only see it less than a second.

Great video! What size rivets hold the material on inside?
I'm trying to find where to get those ribbers too
i changed mine just like you did and it broke again so i used gorilla glue and taped it down and 24 hrs later it was good as new. It's so sad for me to se a xb poorly maintained
eBay has all colors got a blue one

Love it
How to stop Handle is buy a strap on line that you attached to your latch on the door
Please take better care of your scion!!!!!!!
Nice!
I just changed out my cabin air filter, it added 37hp!!
What air filter did u use instead?
You could get the wiper strip and metal strip from Toyota for like $4
Good info, well done!
the hachi dude!!
A black latch handle could greatly enhance the xB's strong resemblance to a toaster, for the entertainment of whoever is behind you in traffic.
In their boring ass common place cars, yes.
Mine is the same !
What would cause the rear latch not to open? Just for an engine swap. It was fine before that . Picked it up , rear latch not working. 2004 xb

Omfg finally a video
Taking out rivits - I used a claw hammer. Still had some break though. Breakage seems inevitable.
Ok so I am going to try to rebuild mine since I have a yellow 2.0. But I have a good idea how to fix it

THANK U
Anytime 👍

What happened to the xB???
Does your scion shake when you come to a light?

njyuphoto it didn't help that the guy kept getting lost lol

Sean Pangan it's been untouched for a few months now. I only got one episode of it coming up next month :(
Wash you car and paint your crusty wheels black xD
at 8:03 he shows the plastic tab for the hatch latch, does anyone know the actual name of it? I lost mine and need to get a new one.
Beat up your most reliable car. Real smart.
Good kid

JP toyota Bb US scion xb ?
Hai!
I don't believe you did 90k without an air filter though...
It might of been 20k or 30k definitely not 90k.
That car is seriously unattractive, but good job, enjoyed the video
