    FM with tonality! At its core, the Instruō neóni is a traditional analogue oscillator. What sets it apart from other oscillators in the Instruō product line is it’s Through-Zero FM functionality with AC and DC coupled operation. Add that to its precision soft sync and directional hard sync modes, nonlinear wavefolding, internal modulation routings, and you end up with the most tonal FM sounds imaginable.
    Unlike traditional FM, where an oscillator momentarily stalls as negative voltage pulls its frequency down to 0 Hz, neóni inverts the polarity
    of its waveforms until positive voltage pulls it back through 0 Hz.
    This behavior allows for complex waveforms with less non-harmonic sidebands. Less clang, more bang!
    Drop it all to subsonic territory for organic modulations of morphable voltage.
    • Linear through-zero & traditional FM with AC & DC coupled functionality
    • Internal modulation routing and general-purpose CV input with attenuator
    • Split sawtooth morphing and nonlinear wavefolding
    • Precision soft sync
    • Directional hard sync
    • Individual waveform outputs
    • LFO mode

    I always thought TZFM was extremely hard to achieve in analog, but then Instruo comes along with yet another masterpiece.

    Oof... the TZFM theory @1:12:00 ... very nice explained, even for non-Neóni owners.
    Although I need to watch this a couple of times and make a Sync/FM 'cheat sheet' of what/when/which result, I think it's 'fundamental' for oscillators like this. Experimentation without the knowledge won't get the full potential from the Neóni.

    Great and thorough demo Jason, especially of TZFM and how it works, totally clear now. Most important takeaway for me: 1) TZFM is definately the most musically useful for tonal music 2) The role-reversal of carrier/modulator where pitch-control is concerned.
    Quite the little beast you've made there with a lot of sonic range, sounds great. Appreciate the tweaks to the range control. At first glance it naively strikes me as being able to cover 2/3 of the timbral territory of the CS-L in less than half the space, which is a really nice option to have. It's like it sits very nicely between the capabilities of the TS-L and the CS-L. Great work!
    PS: We all REALLY hope that the Intruo plugin for VCV Rack will be ported to Rack V2, which is just around the corner. Should be a simple port.

    Jason, 2 questions:
    1. How many organs do I need to sell to get two of these in one module, like a TZFM-Update to the Cš-L?
    2. How many MORE organs to get Instruō to develop a badass desktop monosynth, Implexus-style?

    What I'm curious about is how it behaves when multiple operators are already in modulation.. I'm sure it still behaves the same just wondering the sounds it will produce when 3-4 detuned osc are already in play before getting to the neoni.. suppose I'll have to drag my quad op into the local store here in Portland

    • @Kale_116
      @Kale_116 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the sounds I use FM to make are sonic chugs in low hrz range which I suppose is kind of a specific sound.. anyhow I love the video.. very excited to give this module a shot!!

    • @instruo
      @instruo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best way to consider the neóni used as 'carrier' in an FM configuration is as an elaborate type of wavefolder.
      If you use a tonal modulation signal the result will retain tonality. Specifics of range being frequency dependent of course.
      I assume your quad op is some form of digital FM algorithm/John Chowning based synth?
      If so it'll remain tonal with overtone related index ratios.
      Happy testing!

    I've been wondering for a while now... Is there a distinction between linear thru-zero & exponential thru-zero frequency modulation? Which have we been listning to in this video? Does exponential thru-zero even exist? I can't say that I have ever come acoss it.
    Also, can/does linear/exponential through-zero modulation also apply to PM or AM?

    • @instruo
      @instruo  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      PM and AM are completely difference processes.
      The neoni applies linear modulation scaling in conjunction with core phase reversal to achieve the through 0Hz modulation behaviour.
      Exponential can theoretically be achieved through full wave rectification of the modulation source which can be applied to the 1V/octave (exponential) FM input in parallel to the linear (which applies the core phase reversal upon zero crossings).
      The depth of pitch swing gets extreme in this context as one would expect.
      There are differences to the timbre, but in more subjective musical terms I find that considerable attenuation over the exponential modulation depth is required and at that point the differences in usable timbres aren't that far from the existing balanced linear TZFM... which the downside of losing a key dynamic timbre control over the TZFM result, which is the 1V/octave input.

    • @PspiralifeTutorials
      @PspiralifeTutorials 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the fast and detailed answer!
      I can picture the extreme outcome of the expxonential thru-zero, and can imagine that it would need to be tamed which would bring it closer to the results of linear thru 0 as you said. @@instruo

  • @alepan6349

    The one question that remains to me is in TZFM, how does the FM Index affect the sound? Since the modulator defines the pitch, does the FM Index directly affect the pitch as well?

    • @instruo
      @instruo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It defines timbre.
      Think of it as wavefold amount/depth.
      The side bands all align to the harmonic series when symmetry is precise which is how it retains tonality.

    Thanks for the video. I'm still unclear as to how you are getting harmonically related modulation by making the modulator the fundamental source and the carrier the the "waveshaper" by tuning things exactly to a frequency. Around 1:09 is where it's not really clear what you're doing. Do I need a scope and a tuner to achieve this? I have a weston TZO and I have attempted this before but by using it's sync input. I sync the carrier to the modulator (modulator outputting a bipolar signal) and just 1vpo the modulator, then send that same modulator signal into the linear fm input. Is this the same effect? I don't know how to make my 1vpo source go negative. I tried with my Blinds using a negative offset but I can't get the same effect. Thanks.

    • @instruo
      @instruo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure I fully understand your question.
      When the neoni is modulated through zero it is receiving a bipolar modulation signal.
      If the modulation signal is a tonal signal and the neoni is AC coupled then you’ll achieve tonal waveshaping.
      The frequency of this modulation signal is retained as fundamental pitch. The TZFM effect is essentially complex waveshaping on that modulator fundamental.
      It’s the modulator that would then be controlled 1V/octave to define a melody.
      The 1V/octave itself doesn’t need to be negative, but it could be depending on where your modulation oscillator is tuned and what note you want. 1V/octave is simply a control scheme for pitch control by a DC offset of variable voltage.
      The 1V/octave of the neoni can of course be controlled in this context and it will define an equivalent timbre range as wavefold depth on a wavefolder. The timbres are quite similar.
      I like to emphasise how correctly balanced TZFM is a very powerful alternative to wavefolding.

      Very different from phase modulation (which is something I’ll do in the future because it’s also a very interesting technique)
