    I'm just back from one of the most difficult approach I've flown so far. Thunderstorms all around, St Elmo fire (google it if you want to see what it's like, electric arcs across the windshield), hail and heavy rain, I flew the approach manually and made a smooth landing despite the strong crosswind. Believe me, there is nothing more rewarding than to fly a nice approach in those conditions, this is just an awesome feeling and it made my day! I hope you guys will get to experience this someday!

    I remember finding this video a few years ago during my pilot studies and watching it over and over again whenever I felt the need for a motivational boost especially during the theoretical studies. Now coming back to this video and remembering those endless days and nights in front of my book really brings a smile to my face :) Within the last year I have finished flight school, successfully completed a recruitment process, passed the TR and also just a few weeks back successfully passed my Line Flying Check.
    Something that felt really distant to me the last time I saw this video is now my everyday reality and I truly and honestly can say it is all worth it! I am living my dream at the age of just 22!
    Never quit dreaming, never stop. Always chase your passion no matter what! You WILL succeed and it is never too late!

    So, musics are (all tracks are from Audiomachine):
    - Eterna (0:00 until 1:28)
    - Breath and Life (1:29 until 2:52)
    - Ashes to Ashes (2:53 until 4:07)
    - Eternal Flames (4:08 until 5:32)
    They've just released a new album (Epica)

    About two thirds of fully trained pilots out of school in Europe do NOT get a job as a pilot. I don't think this figure is much higher in other parts of the world either.
    While it is a great job, it does have drawbacks and it certainly isn't an easy life.
    Getting a pilot job requires a little more than just having the proper licenses. People have to fight for it and those who aren't ready for that will simply not land a job in a cockpit anytime soon.

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    During autolands, the Captain has its hands on the controls and looks outside the whole time, the First Officer checks all the instruments, ILS, Speed, altitude and if anything is not within certain tight limits they initiate a go-around.
    During the flare, the Captain follows the plane on the controls and if doesn't like what the autopilot is doing, he can still disconnect at anytime or force the controls (i.e. pull back the power to idle or add a few %N1).

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you a pilot?
    Autoland is only used when weather conditions don't allow a normal CAT I landing. That's why it's called "CAT II or CAT III autoland". You cannot do an autoland on a CAT I. ATC will report "CAT III in use" and unless your plane is equipped with a HUD, you will have to let the autopilots do the job for you.
    Now I do agree we tend to use too much automation, you can look for "children of Magenta" on youtube, it explains it very well.

  • @golfcharlie232

    G/S in white and smaller prints means the mode is armed but not yet activated. When it becomes green, it is activated and the green box around it stays on for 10 seconds. The AP won't allow to capture the G/S before the LOC.
    Just before capturing, we were in LVL CHG (pitch for speed and thrust to idle). A/T mode is "ARM" (you can move it freely but by default it's in idle) and vertical mode is MCP Speed, the higher the speed the higher the descent rate as it pitches down to catch the MCP speed.

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you hesitate between pilot and something else, do something else. Now that doesn't mean you have to give up on your dream, but you have to be sure to do the right thing. Being a pilot is not just filming nice views from a 737, it is years and years of struggle and low paid jobs, flying small and old aircraft to build up your hours before you can even apply to an airline. In the US flying for a regional you're looking at about $18,000 a year. You better be sure you will actually like it, I was

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds great, you can also send me a few cameras, a Gopro HD2 (I don't have one just yet), a new lens for my DSLR (Canon EF 70-200 f4 L IS to start with), and ... well, a couple of days off to finish my new video would be great. I also need a faster computer to render all that.
    I'm kidding of course.
    One of my videos has been sold though (a short 2 min footage inside an A320) for a US TV channel. I had to take the video off youtube then and I don't want to have to do that with the 737 videos.

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The AFDS (Autopilot) modes don't really work the same way in reality. But that's too complicated to explain and I don't remember what NGX does exactly.
    In cruise, AT's set a constant N1 setting and if the speed goes up, it goes up, the engines won't reduce until at least +10kts. In NGX they will (NGX maintains the exact speed you command anyway). Ailerons control, at slow speed the real aircraft has a huge inertia. At high speed, it has almost no inertia, much more sensitive than NGX.

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sure! Dead band is the fact that when you rotate during take-off (you're looking for 15° up, initially), the aircraft stops at 8° (when the tail is close to the ground). You have to double the force on the yoke to continue to lift it up.
    On landing with flaps 30, the aircraft is not incredibly different from NGX but with flaps 40, the real aircraft just dive as soon as you reduce power. Also, on the real aircraft, you need about 52% N1 on final with Flaps 30, 62% N1 with Flaps 40.

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The PMDG 737 is very good for basic FMC inputs, general cockpit layout, overhead panel controls and excellent for graphics. Unfortunately, the flight model itself is completely different from the real aircraft and overall unrealistic. Also, some important features like the "dead band" during rotation are not modelled either. But still a nice game.
    Sorry I cannot make any video that shows procedures that are company dependent. I'll still try to show some parts of the setup from cold and dark.

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Future pilot shortage, if this ever happens, will be in Asia and in the Middle East but the requirements will stay very high (currently 2500h on JAR25 jet aircraft to join EK for example). Situation in the US and in Canada could lead to a lack of pilots. Maybe not a pilot shortage but a lack of qualified pilots with experience, quite probably. But this won't happen in Europe.
    As for working conditions, it just depends on who you work for, and it takes time to join a major airline. Good luck!

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Subscribe, I will upload more. It takes a long time to film the videos and then edit them into one final video. I'm waiting a bit more for my next video as I want it to be like a movie with a story behind it, starting from the hotel room through the journey (or the week) as an airline pilot, flying, travelling, doing paperwork, commuting, visiting cities, etc ... It won't only be filmed in the cockpit this time, I will add many non-cockpit views, but it is even longer to film everything.

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't want to sound pessimistic but this is only a video. I wanted to show the great side of the job.
    I am not saying it is a bad but don't be tempted to think everything is great and easy. Most airlines (at least those recruiting) have bad working conditions. The job can be tough when things go wrong (and it does happen fairly often). There is no stability and it is far from what a lot of people expect.
    Enjoy the video, but think carefully and wisely. I have no regret but some people do ..

    @golfcharlie232 My friend, thanks for this excellent video! Really wonderfull... and I agree with you, I'm just finishing my comercial pilot curse here in Brazil, and many people already told me to give up, but I keep my faith until the end. Thank you again for sharing with us this beautifull piece of art!

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, lets put it like this, my last autoland during a CAT III approach was 3 months ago, and the previous one was another 3 months before that. All the other landings were "manual", usually disconnecting the autopilot between 1000ft and FL200, depending on how busy things get in the flightdeck.

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm starting the making of a much longer video with ten times better views, filmed with better cameras and it will include a lot of more than just flying. It takes a lot of time to render the video so stay tuned!

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's Boeing procedures to put the start switches on CONT for take-off and landing or during operation of engine anti-ice.
    Tell me which airlines that was (on the World Air Routes video) so that I make sure I never fly on it?

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @FlynHyer I wish I could but I cannot upload anything that shows the airline's operating procedures or ATC communications. I could upload random ATC and aircraft sound but that would be a shame, wouldn't it?

  • @golfcharlie232
    @golfcharlie232  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could have been .. but I don't fly to Bordeaux (I do, but as a passenger), and I don't use Gopro's.

    Years and years ago, i was a pilot with a commercial licence looking and searching for a job anywhere in the world without success. The search was going on for 5 years. I had a very boring office job at the time that was killing me....and during that time it was your videos that kept me motivated. Ofcourse my boss wasnt very happy catching me on youtube playing this vid everyday but i didnt care :) its what kept me going back then...
    Today i am a line check short or 4 stripes on A320, expecting to be released in the next few days.
    I just want you to know that you had an influence in my life and im sure im not the only one...

    To be honest, you don't need to be a genius to be a pilot. You don't need to be the smart type either, what it takes is straight forward reasoning (e.g. Problem -> Options -> Decide and Act). No need to play the Ph.D or engineer in the cockpit, you don't have time for that up there.
    Now, good grades will still make a good difference as it is more than recommended to get a degree before starting a pilot course. A lot of airlines require one and that's a good fall-back when there's no pilot job.

    Technical Question: What is the benefit of feeding wind date into the flight computer while in cruise or descent? I've seen it in other cockpit videos. Amazing footage i've seen on your quite a few of your videos. Question for you when you got time, do you prefer flying when sun is rising or sun is setting? Thanks for the awesome videos.

    @golfcharlie232 I'd be happy with just the inflight sounds. You can censor out anything with the airline's name in it or something.

    Gyönyörű film, az ember szárnyalását igazából bemutató.
    És a zene hozzá, igazán felemelő, és megható..
    Köszönöm.

    It is improving right now. More and more senior guys, like me, are retiring at increasing levels. I don't know what your timeline is, but if you can get aboard a commuter airline flying jets and get by for a few years, the future looks bright. I'm talking about huge numbers.
    I have been with a major U.S. airline for 26 years, now a Captain of the 737. I have a little over three years to reach age 65. You can find the numbers on the internet. There will be thousands of retirements soon.

    When I look at your videos they make me think of these words;''Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
    and also about these "All men dream: but not equally... the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.”
    I do like your videos,they remind me of the most wonderful time in my life.

    I didn't knew you thought i was a pilot!
    But FlightGear, it isn't great, the graphics suck,but what i love is you can learn very good how airplanes behave :).
    I learned how to ILS, flare, etc from FlightGear.
    I want to be a 737 Classic pilot man, very much!!
    I figured if i stay at school i'll later be making about 2500 EURO's per month, and if i can save 1000 EUR every month, i'll need 100 months to be a regional pilot, which is about 1800 dollars per month :( , and then later a 737 pilot xD.

    lawl, nice trolling... I just googled "FlightGear" and it looks really awesome! I just got into 'Vatsim' (A F S X community). I will download FlightGear tomorrow. I might get "FS COMMANDER" were you can make custom flight plans. Do you want to do anything in aviation in life or will you stay a enthusiast for life?
    Regional pilots are on a shortage because they get payed near to nothing! :/
