How to remove and replace a rear diff center (Solid Axle)

  • Gday Guys and Gals!
    I picked up a second hand rear diff center for my Toyota Landcruiser 80 series with an ARB airlocker installed and decided to make a video on how to remove and replace the rear diff center.
    I give you a full step by step run through on how to replace the diff center and all the steps leading up to getting it out, how to clean and prepare the diff and gaskets for the new center and how to reassemble everything in the end.
    The standard Limited slip diff would have been good when the vehicle was new but after 380 000km it would have been acting as an open differential, thats the reason replacing it with an airlocking or elocking diff is a great upgrade. The great thing about these select-able lockers is you can lock the diff completely for when your off-road or need more traction and when you want it to act as an open diff you just flick the switch.
    I will also be fitting a front ARB airlocker in the near future and will do a video of how to remove the front diff center. So stay tuned!
    Thanks for watching, and if you enjoyed or would like to see more videos hit subscribe :D
    Let me know in the comments what sort of how to videos you would like to see next as well !
    Cheers, Nick!

    Rear is easy. On FJ80 (e.g. 1994 Land Cruiser), front requires pulling the drums, brakes, etc: the drive shafts consist of two parts, a KNUCKLE, which requires more parts to pull off front knuckle assembly.

    Hello, nice job very instructive! I hv an fzj80 land cruiser 1996 with cen diff lockers, and im having a bad rear differential now cuz i changed the diff oil and the diff began to jam on high speeds so i am wondering from where did u bought that rear differential? online ? And how much did it costs u? Thanks

    Do I have to remove the rear axles all the way out or could I just take them out half way. Reason I ask is because I have limited space on both sides of 80 and it's raining all week so I cant do it outside

    • @howtonick2803
      @howtonick2803  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only need to pull the axles out about 20-30cm untill they are out of the diff :)

    • @howtonick2803
      @howtonick2803  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You just mark the driveshaft and diff flange so that it goes on the same way. If you are putting a new diff in there is no need to balance or mark the drive shaft.

    • @howtonick2803

    • @howtonick2803
      @howtonick2803  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you can't, the axles lock into the diff centre and would stop it being removed.

      @@skokomurliak I think you will have To seperate the axle and hub from the diff housing and then remove the wheel bearing and axle from the hub to be able to get the wheel studs out.

    My advice is to grease the wheel bearings with marine grease and not high temp grease as high temp grease desolves in salt water and it would be impossible to take the diff apart!

    • @ToreDL87
      @ToreDL87 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've found for live rear axles it doesn't matter because the halfshafts are encased by the caps on the end of the halfshafts and the housing itself.
      In other words, if the diff gets as bad as you imply, you will have had to ignore an oil leak so bad it would have turned your diff into a violent puzzle long before 3rd member & halfshaft disassembly ever becomes an issue.
