      Another easy tip: Buy an aftermarket clear cover and paint the inside with spray touch up paint. Comes out much smoother than painting the outside.

    If you have a good door and other body seals, treat them with the 303 door seal liquid. It is special stuff they make. Minimally use the dielectric grease on them. This will preserve them a long time and you will save a shit ton of money. The seals are very expensive.

    It's my understanding that the ebcu, (electronic brake control unit) fails quite often on this model, as well as the shocks in the rear. Also the heads up unit. The shocks, and the ebcu are discontinued. What are your comments/thoughts on this, as I really want one of these cars.

    • @Grassrootsmotorsports
      @Grassrootsmotorsports  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The brake controllers on the 2001-2004 models are rebuildable. There's places out there like absfixer and others that will rebuild them for under $200. Pre-'01 EBCUs are getting a bit hard to find, though. I've not heard about problems with the HUD itself, but the bezels on the dash are very prone to cracking, and require a lot of the dash to come out to fix. But there's snap-over covers that hide the damage and are almost impossible to tell from the stock configuration. HVAC control units tend to have issues with the displays-they still work, but not everything lights up. Again, absfixer and a few other companies rebuild those as well. I wouldn't sweat about shocks. There's plenty of good aftermarket solutions available there. Unless you need something factory correct there's tons of options for good shocks.

      @@Grassrootsmotorsports Thank you very much for the response. What about the pre 2001 ebcu's? The '98, 99, is a little more in my budget range. Also, what do you know about the rubber piece that's on the harmonic balancer? I understand they deteriorate very quickly. Thanks again for the info!

    • @Grassrootsmotorsports
      @Grassrootsmotorsports  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kennethgrutter9406 On the pre-'01 EBCUs, my knowledge isn't up-to-the-minute current, but last I heard, my friends who were auto crossing and tracking earlier C5s were buying up good used EBCUs whenever they found them to have for spares. I have to think someone will crack the code on rebuilds eventually. But for now, to mu knowledge, they're getting rare. As for the Balancer rubber, we hear that around 100,000 miles is definitely time to start thinking about it, if it hasn't gone bad already. Our car has 96,000 and is getting ready for a crate motor (with an ATI balancer) in just a few weeks. The thing about doing a balancer is that it opens you up to a bunch of other "while I'm in here..." kind of things. Oil pump, timing chain and gears and guides, water pump. Pretty much all the front of the motor stuff. So consider that as well.

      @@kennethgrutter9406 Think hard about the '01+ cars. The price difference on the front end is probably more than the potential penalty of unavailable parts on the back end. C5s are great cars dynamically, but still suffered from era-typical GM shortcomings. They're mechanically durable, but "soft" parts age poorly.

    FYI base C5 18x9.5 rear wheels are 65 mm offset. And those didn't look like OEM magnesium wheels, rather they look like the OE Wheels C5 replica. The Mag wheels don't have the open lug area for the center cap, they just use a small round cap.

    • @Grassrootsmotorsports
      @Grassrootsmotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, those Z06 wheels are replicas, not real Speedlines. On the offset issue, though, the chart we've been referring to doesn't show a 65mm offset for base C5 rears. www.corvettecentral.com/wheel-offset
      Are there multiple wheel offsets or is one of our sources wrong?

    • @cscafero
      @cscafero 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was referring to the fronts that you said were Magnesium. I've seen that chart before, it's the only source I've seen that says 57 mm, everywhere else shows 65 mm. If you know any B-street guys still running OEM rears, the offsets are cast into the back of the wheel spokes, I'll see if anybody I know has some to verify.

    • @Grassrootsmotorsports
      @Grassrootsmotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's the great debate, isn't it? Modified LS1 vs LS6. Depending on your final goal, you're probably looking at about a wash. Like, if you want to make 400hp with an LS1, you're probably going to end up spending about what you would have for a Z06 anyway. Long term I think that Z06 will hold value better than a modified base vette. But if you're looking to constantly tweak and tune and build something crazy, maybe starting with a base car is a better plan. Is that noncommittal enough for you?

    • @JasonRidesmoto
      @JasonRidesmoto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Grassroots Motorsports yeah it's a tough decision for me! C5 base for 14k (to build and enjoy) ... Or Z06 for 19ish... kinda leaning on the base... Not really worried about resale value and I like the coupe look better too... Thanks for the chat!

    how much should I pay for one? that doesn't work or turn on?

    • @Grassrootsmotorsports
      @Grassrootsmotorsports  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a broad question that really depends on teh reason it doesn't turn on. It could be something as simple as a bad chassis ground, which these cars are prone to. That could be fixed in minutes and the car would be worth full value for age, mileage and condition. Or, it could have a fried ECM or BCM, or some other electronic mysteries going on. I might take someone with me to check it our who's really good at Corvette electrical troubleshooting. Maybe it's a simple issue that LOOKS awful and you can walk away with a great deal.
