    Notes about this video:
    1. I say press ups in the video (UK talk) - they are the same as push ups 😀
    2. I appreciate the suggestions for how to improve my push ups.
    Please bear in mind we did this because we wanted a challenge during lockdown. Something to break up the days.
    Having recovery days throughout would have improved my max reps, but I was in this for the mental game as much as the physical. Like I mentioned in the video, this probably wasn't the best way, but it was a great challenge.
    Thank you for all the supportive comments.

      Interesting fact: The American term “push-up” was first used between 1905 and 1910. The Brit term “press-up” first used in1945-1950. The exercise itself has been around for ages with evidence of ancient civilizations using similar movements to increase physical prowess for their tasks at hand. Whichever you call it, it sounds lovely with your accent! And of course, a rose by any other name smells just as sweet!

    I'm 60, I do 4 sets of 25 push-ups every morning for the past 2 years. In between sets I do 10 kettle-bell swings and 10 kettle-bell squats. I do this everyday and will continue for the rest of my life. I also workout about an hour and a half 3 to 4 days a week. Coupled with good nutrition and supplements I have epic energy and work and feel better. I recommend while you have momentum just continue on. It's amazing what it will do to change your life.

    I've been doing this every other day for a year now. 100 to 150 every other day. I personally don't see a massive difference but everyone around me has noticed a big difference. They ask ..." what are you doing? Why you look in shape?" I say pushups, keep doing them till you can't do them , give yourself a day off to recover and do it again the following day. Rest is a must or you will get injured, shoulder, elbows, wrist...just be careful. I'm 49

    Thanks, Laura. Another great video and challenge with honest outcomes. I'm always a bit wary of these 30-day challenges, especially as I'm now in my mid-50s and need that recovery time more than I used to. So, it's always good to see someone else doing them and reporting back, so I don't have to! Keep up the great work with the channel and your efforts to inform and inspire us. All you need to work on now is showing Ben how to shoot landscape mode video for TH-cam! ;-)

    Your channel is so enjoyable to watch! Can't believe you don't have more views and subscribers - such a refreshing channel! The result is not surprising - 100 press-ups daily without recovery time is overtraining and undermining the goal of doing more press-ups without stopping. Adequate rest is crucial to successfully building muscle size and strength. Usually every other day training the same muscles is adequate rest and brings positive results. A general rule of thumb is if the muscles are sore, don't do strength training of those muscles until they are not sore (stretching and light movement is good). For women this is especially key due to hormones and cortisol levels changing with aging. Also, increased reps in a set over time is necessary as the body adapts. So, you trained yourself to do 10 press-ups at a time and the result is you can now easily do 10 press-ups at a time with much better form than at the start. What you didn't train for was to increase your maximum reps. 😅 To increase your max reps, either add weight, add difficulty (e.g., elevate the feet, do Seal push-ups, etc.), or increase the reps by 1 or 2 each time you train. Another tip for getting more reps with less effort, if that's the goal rather than increasing strength - position your arms at a 45' angle from your body instead of so close, and go at a faster speed.

    Really interesting video and result. Ever since my early teens, press ups have been a staple of my fitness regime (if you can call it that). Even during times when I didn't have a regime, I still did press ups. I find that they're one of the best compound exercises given they can work chest, shoulders, core, triceps, etc. A lot depends on the position and placement of the arms and palms - you can target different areas. But great video, Laura, loving the content, the honest appraisal and down to earth approach.

    This is a great challenge. If part of the goal is to increase the total max amount per sitting, you need to increase you amount for the first rep each day but still not exceeding 100 for the daily total. Starting with 10 reps for 10 sets will quickly turning into 20 for 5 sets, than 50 resp for 2 sets etc. At 58 years old, I do 100 reps, and 100 sit ups twice a day.

    I hope you’ve kept up with it! I’ve got 10 years on you and I still do my press ups nightly, with weekends off. I find doing them before bed helps burn more calories while sleeping and also gives the body over night to recover. I find that doing about 80% of your max reps nightly works well for me, so I do about 60 in one set usually. Gradually add a few press ups to your regimen and you’ll find that your body will adapt and ask for more!

    Great stuff! I hadn't realised that you spread them out through the day! Great idea. I've followed the Wm Hof method doing breath work before the press ups. My best is 45 in 1 go after the breathing exercise. My usual is around 40. Been trying to hit 65 for my 65th birthday, but doesn't look like I'll get there. But I will if I split them through the day. Yes! Thank you.

    When I was in the Army, i had a program I used to increase my max pushups for a 2 min test. Topped out at around 60 in 2 minutes. You need 3-4 training days a week with rest in between, variations of pushups in 3 sets to increase the strength of surrounding assisting muscles (shoulder and triceps and lats in addition to pectorals), wide arm push up, close in (like you do for your baseline pushup) then the regular width push up.

    When I joined the Army, I couldn’t even do one proper push-up. I did 10-20 elevated (kitchen counter) every time I went into the kitchen. When that became easy, I moved lower-a table. Then I moved to a chair seat then a coffee table and finally the floor. Within two months, I could do 20 proper push-ups on the floor and could build up from there.

Good for the joints and that is the true range for that exercise. The function of being able to push yourself up off of the floor. Very practical exercise.

    I know what went wrong: do 100 push-ups every alternate day. I day rest restores your muscles and that helps big time to increase number of reps you do in one go

    • @MrGonzonator
      @MrGonzonator 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In one set is also crucial.

    • @eventhisidistaken
      @eventhisidistaken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The key to making gains, is you have to push to failure to ensure you have micro tears in your muscles, and then allow time for recovery. It's during the recovery that muscles grow, but only if they actually needed to recover to begin with.

    • @LupusRexRgis
      @LupusRexRgis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I would even suggest giving yourself 48 hours to rest, and to do those 100 reps in the same session. Even if splitting them into 10 sets of 10 reps. But doing throughout the days interferes badly with your recovery, only exhausting yourself and sabotaging your gains.

    • @celticm6616
      @celticm6616 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've been doing them since I was 17 or 18 your body needs time to for rest and repair itself, you don't need to do them 7 days a week give your body a rest you'll find you're doing more otherwise it's a chore.

    • @lancelotlink6545
      @lancelotlink6545 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it's important to note- when you exercise you are not building muscle at that time. You are literally destroying the muscle with micro-tears. With good nutrition and rest the muscles then rebuild (hopefully to a stronger level). But without adequate rest your results are limited and it's possible to get poor results if any. Your age will affect how much rest you need. The younger you are the less rest that is required to restore the muscles. At her age she would have done well with 2 days rest - doing the press ups every third day. In that scenario I have no doubt she would have had better gains.
