Characters are a damn near 1:1, but the backgrounds (temple, sky, pixelated floor) are noticeably different. Good port, damn near perfect.

The arcade version ran on the Namco System 12 board, which had a faster CPU, double video RAM and more audio capabilities for PCM and FM, but was essentially a PS1 at it's core. This allows the Arcade version to spend more resources on realizing full 3D backgrounds with correct perspective movements while the PS1 version uses the same repeating grid based ground plane as previous Tekken games and a skybox for backgrounds, which is why they're out of sync at the seam. The character assets are near identical, though some texture elements are higher quality on the arcade version.
The arcade version was literally a commercial for the PS1 version as visually it could not compete with the previous years Virtua Fighter 3 which was THE fighting game to beat in Japan at the time, but that wouldn't be able to get a home port for a couple of years (And still a downgraded port at that in terms of graphics). Namco did have more powerful arcade hardware at the time of release (System 23) but it was still inferior to the SEGA Model 3 board that ran VF3 and would have also made cross development difficult.
Concerning the 'resolution' and 'frame rate' differences, this is mostly due to a quirk of the emulators used, both versions on actual hardware run at the low res option. 256x224 Progressive on Arcade and 256x448 Interlaced on PS1. PS1 emulators with a game that has no progressive mode run the game at the full vertical resolution and treat each interlace scan as it's own frame.

Namco's System 12 board, which Tekken 3 ran on, is an overclocked PS1, with a faster CPU (48 MHz vs. the stock PS1's 33 MHz), more Video RAM (2 MB vs the PS1's 1 MB), and a revised sound hardware (same as System 11, but with a Hitachi H83002 CPU driving Namco's custom C352 PCM chip). The increased CPU speed and VRAM allowed the game to include fully 3D backgrounds, also seen on Soul Calibur and Tekken Tag Tournament, the latter two which weren't ported back to the PS1.
When porting Tekken 3 back to the PS1, the 3D backgrounds became 2D based.

to save memory, they essentially turned the environments into surrounding walls for the PSX version. Considering that most people didn't think it was possible, the fact that they found a streamlined way to pull this off AND the game was 1:1 to the arcade version w/ frame data all made the console version quite god-like.
Plus the OST arranged updates for the console were second to none.
Tekken 3 is STILL the greatest.

Models have less polygons on PS1, Hwoarang's belt lacks some of the physics and the stages are bitmap based skyboxes rather than being 3D assets. The arcade basically has parallax with the mix of 3D background elements and the separate skybox

The backgrounds are 2d in the PS1 and the floor resolution is really low compared to the arcade.

I knew about the arcade board and stuff but a lot of our local arcades actually used PS1 with the disc inside for arcade cabinets. It was hard to tell the difference other than the blood color. Which I never noticed till watching this video.

The natural *Hit Effect* all characters have in the arcade version of 1997's Tekken 3 are green like in 1994's Tekken, and within such a version, the backgrounds are distinctly in *3D,* unlike the PS1 version that released a year later, taking a pre-rendered look as a result.....interesting.

The only real difference is the backgrounds. The arcade version is fully rendered in 3D while the PS1 version uses the same static 2D background technique as the first two games.

The PS1 home version is an excellent port. The only thing the system couldn't properly handle are the backgrounds.

The arcade version had a lot of details in minor things.. like the stage background, the floor and wall patterns, tiles, clouds in some stages, separate fingers in character models, all of which are absent in console version.

Green blood was an option in the arcade test menu. Default for US cabinets was red. I think it was green everywhere else.

Now as an adult, I feel like we got cheated with the backgrounds, but aye it was the 90's and they did the best they could with the tech they had. Tekken 3 the GOAT.
