  • "Save an Elephant" Day - What a perfect day to reflect upon Khanyisa's three months since she was saved.
We will never forget getting that call, that there was a baby elephant that was rescued, she was in a terrible condition from being trapped in a snare for days, and dehydrated. Then to be told she is an albino too. Our hearts dropped, how did this little elephant survive all on her own?
In the three months since that day, her beautiful spirit and tenacity have continued to inspire us. Not only has she overcome the physical trauma inflicted by a heartless snare, but she has shown immense strength through her emotional trauma too.
Over the past two weeks, Adine has started the slow integration process with the Jabulani Herd, working with our trusted expert elephant advisors along the way. We introduced Khanyisa to Jabulani, as he showed a lot of interest in her wellbeing. From there we introduced her to her new adoptive mom, Lundi, also known as the "great aunt of the Jabulani Herd". Lundi has one baby of her own, who is ten years old. The Matriarch, Tokwe has two of her own, and also two orphaned elephants under her wing, so we felt it would be a better idea to have Lundi step up and have some more responsibility too.
One must keep in mind that wild herds, as a rule, do not accept elephants outside of their herd, join. So it is an incredible experience to see love and acceptance that Lundi has shown little Khanyisa.
What an incredible three months it has been!
Thank you for everyone that has supported us!
We have introduced Khanyisa to another two elephants, who do you think it could be? We will share more about that tomorrow!
Please consider donating towards Khanyisa's and HERD's costs on "Save our Elephant" day. We have options to donate or to foster Khanyisa:

The man who is always protecting Khanyisa “Sunshine” from the sun’s UV rays is so sweet and loving! This helps because Khanyisa is an Albino. With such fair skin, Albinos have such a high risk of getting sunburns which can easily lead to skin cancer. Jabulani really took notice of Khanyisa from the first very first “herd” meeting at the fence! I went back and looked several times and saw that it definitely WAS Jabulani, who was found 23 years back being in a similar situation as Khanyisa, who was so very excited to meet her. Elephants are SO BEAUTIFUL! They are extremely intelligent and treat one another very lovingly like humans treat their own family members. The fact that Lundi took Khanyisa in kind of like an adoptive mother, all the while letting her suckle on her nipple, just goes to show how loving and compassionate elephants can be! Seeing Khanyisa “running” over to Lundi and Jabulani in the last update was just SO BEYOND HEARTWARMING TO WATCH!!! Love from Texas ♥️🤠🌴

I have loved elephants all my life. Sunshine is the very first albino elephant that I have ever seen. I loved her on sight and was so very happy when she was rescued. Sunshine is such a precious baby and I was so thrilled when she was able to nurse.
I am so very happy that their are such having and wonderful caregivers for these precious babies.

Can elephants _get_ skin cancer? I know they _aren't_ able to get internal cancers due their 'zombie gene' that turns cancer cells inside out to stop it. Thus. haulting the development of cancers to start to metastasize. _However,_ don't think that the scientists that did that research factored in 'albinism', as it wasn't mentioned. 😆😆
If you're interested in a little bit of elephant biology, may I recommend a 'rabbit hole' full of interesting facts & knowledge for you? (I fell down this hole once _myself._ It's honestly why I posted my comment 😊) Google search 'elephant zombie gene'. 'Why elephants can't get cancer gene'. Apparently, evolution helped out these big guys in a _huge_ way. People are looking at how it all works, trying to see if we humans have a gene like that we can turn on. _Fascinating_ stuff really. If you wanna chat about it as you learn stuff or find out something amazing, please let me know! 😉☕
Anyway this is getting long (sorry bout that), hope your beautiful Texas isn't too hot for you. August in Atlantic Canada this year _sucked._ Super cold?!? Had to _remove_ the AC out of our windows... in AUGUST! That's unheard of. Have yourself a great day. If you want let me know how your searching goes? 🤗🇨🇦

They are absolutely wonderful BUT like humans they can have moods and jealousies and can bully each other on occasion. I saw a video of a large adult bull pushing around a very small young elephant a while back and the narrator made note of his doing that and of the mother moving her baby away from that bull to keep it safe so it not all roses and lollipops. Still for the most part they are very inclusive and loving in general and the females of all ages act as nannies and overseers of the younger elephants too and help to raise them. It is a pretty amazing society overall.

I love that a collection of videos was made and posted of Khanyisa’s journey. She and her new family (human and pachyderm) have a lot to teach us, especially the younger generations: compassion, education about elephants, wildlife conservation and rescue, the painful realities of poaching, resilience and overcoming adversity, acceptance and the fact that being “different” is actually a beautiful thing... I hope her story encourages people to help wildlife however they are able.

Seeing the little calf with her eyes closed while she was smelling the female was so very touching! I imagined that she was remembering her mother's smell or the female smelled similarly to her mother! It was one of the most moving things

This is so sad how can a human this horrible snare hanging in a tree or lay on the ground at this moment 2 years later there are anti poachers teams and much more security in the bush. Little Khanyisa so much pain. There was a Angel and give Khanyisa a new good life with the loving carers and doctors and human mum Adine there come bottle of milk Khanyisa is growing and have a adopt mom Lundi and she is happy in the situation in her lodge and by the elephants and become stronger and healthy and happy. Thank you all for what you do for the Herd and for Sunshine Khanyisa. You are the best.

I just found you and have been watching all the videos of Khanyisa, getting acquainted with everyone from the caregivers and to the elephants. The first part of this video where Khanyisa was drinking from the water trough was emotional for me. Her eyes and body language she appeared to realize she was still alive, I don't mean to put human emotion on her, but that moment was so profound. I forward the video when her injury is shown, can't look knowing the pain that she went through. Thank you, for sharing Khanyisa's story and may she continue to thrive under her caretakers expert work and her herd members, also.

What a beautiful little baby she is! It was so sweet when they would bottle-feed her, how she always had her trunk reached up to their faces. Just like some human babies reach up to mom when they’re being fed. 🥰
