My favorite part is that the Russian Sailor was won over physically and mentally, eventually congratulating Kano Sensei on his legitimate display of skill. Respect to both Kano Sensei and The Russian Sailor.

The more knowledge I have of Jigoro Kano , the more there is to admire in his simple but basic approach to combat. It is a shame that we have forgotten many of basic techniques that he taught to his early students. Once again Chadi thank you for sharing this narrative of this great man.

The Russians were so impressed with Judo during the Japanese Russian War that they learned Judo and mixed it with central Asian folk wrestling. . .Creating SAMBO.
To your knowledge, the founder of Sambo wrestling Vasily Oschepkov was Kano's student and third European ever who got Black belt in Judo.
The founder of sports sambo is Spiridonov. Oshchepkov founded Combat Sambo, which includes blows, wrestling, cold weapons and even bayonet combat.
A tiny brown belt in my gym (about 120 lbs) pins large (225+ lbs) white belts all the time. This story is not only believable but we see it ALL the time on the mats.
I figure every belt level is equivalent to about 30 pounds of muscle. When it comes to bjj or judo at least.

I absolutely agree about having the full jujitsu arsenal. Sensei Jigoro kano was right about that.
@@optimusmaximus9646imagine being punched in the face in the randori and knocking people out in competition like boxers. That's brutish and ungentlemanly and i would imagine it goes against kano's confessed values and reasoning behind creating judo.

I think, all things considered, that it was a wise choice by Kano to keep the standing game. No matter trends and stupid rules, the basic fact of a confrontation is that you want to remain standing and have your opponent on the ground. Yes, there are situations that part from that rule, but it is still elementary. Was I first to comment?

На острове Доманском русские пограничники пинками разгоняли уже китайских мастеров Кун-фу( русским правительство запретило использовать оружие, в отличаи от китайцев). И таких примеров очень много.

Great vid and story! I was surprised to hear about Oda sensei, since I studied his newaza techniques by way of Hal Shape's Judo DVDs. Then I would go to train with my BJJ buddies and give them the business 😂

When I first started Judo I was 5 11 200 lbs, my new instructor was a smaller, older Japanese man Yoshisada Yonezuka tosed me around at will and I couldn't anticipate anything. I had been a high school wrestler and thought I could handle myself, it opened my eyes.

It wasn't a fight per se but some kind of exhibition match. Starting from the back and not a standing position etc however it was good advertising for Judo and all ended amicably and honorably.
if ip man have series of film who globally breakthrough, then kano also have to exclusively filmize, not by fan made, but professional director..it's sure interesting, not just martial artist want to know about his biographic story, even the layman will get interest in his film plot..i'm still wonder why still no producer want to make film about him, he's sure big shot

I don't know how anyone can say Kano was not a fighter because he was a fighter. Of course he didn't go seeking to get into brawls because he personified what a true martial artist was. He cultivated and taught one of the most devastatingly effective fighting systems on the planet. Of course he was a fighter. He loved self defence. He understood fighting. He understood the anatomy of a real fight. He understood self defence, keeping himself safe, his family safe but he knew if ever he needed it, should the situation arise he was a great fighter. He taught or his direct student taught Masahiko Kimura for goodness sake. End of. So I respectively disagree with Chadi's comment at the start.
It is not an insult. If anything it was meant as a compliment, in that Kano was not one to get into street brawls. Nor was he a combat sport athlete.

That is the definition of a "THUG" not a fighter. You don't see Lennox Lewis (one of the greatest heavyweight champs of the word) getting into street brawls, but he WAS a FIGHTER. Pretty sure that’s what he actually meant. As he then proceeds to point out that yes, the dude is a skilled and accomplished teacher, but he wasn’t going around trying to start shit. So there aren’t THAT many fight stories like this about him floating around. That’s all.
I doubt that Dude would make a whole video about Kano taking on a Russian sailor, while simultaneously believing he doesn’t count as a legit fighter.

By the way, a story almost similar to this one is described in a book called Nippon Puroresu Fuunroku, published in 1957. This book was written by Teiji Kojima, a Japanese sumo and pro wrestling writer. It is not only about Master Kano, but also about judoka such as Mitsuyo Maeda.
It is a very rare book in Japan, but if you are interested, you may purchase it.

Chadi what you think of cross-training between wrestling (freestyle , folkstyle , greco etc) and sambo (technically freestyle judo without chokes) ? Does wrestlers have any benefits of this?
I trained in judo under a Korean judo PLAYER and I can attest that people at that level, men and women, do have extraordinary abilities that people cannot imagine until they see them. One of the most interesting abilities is the ability to perform counter throws on somebody who is in the process of attempting to throw you. At this level of ability, time seems to dilate and gives the judoka full control throughout the entire throw while to the spectator the process of the throw is but one or, at most, two seconds.
If Kano was 29, wasn't it NOT called Judo at that point but Kano jiu jitsu? How could Judo be in his quote?
He was 21 when he formed judo/the kodokan
The term jujutsu was indeed the dominant term at the time, however the term judo was not inexistant, other people such as Tomita started talking about the difference in the early 1900s, and even Kano in the book “Mind over muscle” discusses the term.

I wrestled in judo with Japanese Navy cadets in 1959, they were extremely strong and their neck development was impressive, us we were novices and maybe 5 grades lower than them.

What I know it was Kano student which must escape to Brasil when he started ju jitsu school
I defeated 30 young men who jumped on me while I was walking through the school playground at that point i only did judo for one year I have no idea why they decided to attack me but from the first one who jumped on me from behind and I had no idea they were there i threw him of with a hip throw and he went right over me on to his back to the last one they were all in a big pile on the floor. A teacher who saw what id done said why did you attack them i replied no they attacked me I didn't punch not one they were all thrown with the standard yellow belt throws I'd been practising with i have to admit some pretty tough boys plus our teacher was an Olympic champion from the 70s it was one of my best days at school i was very down beat before hand but after i felt very elevated.
Then they all got up and clapped?

Просто как может человек весом 41 килограмм победить моряка, весом я думаю от 60- до 90 кг примерно. Напоминаю случай боксерского восстания в Китае. Вроде бы китайские мастера и ученики , тренероваличь довольно часто. Против них же выступила обыкновенная шпана из юных англичан которые занимались боксом и то изредка , и англичане победили ибо физически они были тяжелее . Можно говорить, и уважать Брюса Ли, и что он побил бы какого нибудь Тайсона или бойца его весовой категории, но это домыслы , которые в жизни вряд-ли бы подтвердились , при всем уважении к Брюсу Ли
I read a similar story involving a Russian sailor against the Karate founder, Gishin Funakoshi. The Russian eventually died on the ship during the returning travel.
The fact that the Russian sailors are never positively identified in both stories can be an indication that those fights were purely fictional.

I was doing judo.
And I can tell, that if you both doing Judo, and you have 2x + muscle weight difference, you are still on equal chance of winning.
But, if it comes to MMA,... I mean, 40kg, it's 1.5 bags of street salt... 😂 You just need to be fit and big to pick up and put the lil' guy onto the ground.
Meaning that this Russian guy was not fit or/and was not smart enough to use his bodys advantages, and was probably just a saleman, while the Judo master was a professional wrestler with everyday training.
I mean, sure, you could be fighting a couch 400 pounds potatoe, being a 100 and win easily. But, would it make you a serious MA rival?...
How did they communicate? In Russian? Japanese? English?

I would like to hear the story from the Russian sailor...... I think it would be completely the opposite. And a Russian sailor would never have congratulated the enemy on the victory, not such an upbringing. Most likely, the sailor could demand another duel later, and would stubbornly prepare for the duel.
Why are you generalizing? It's a very bad approach. Do you know Russians so well? You say a Russian sailor..but do you mean Russian or from Russia? Russia is multinational.That sailor could have any background. For example, if he was from the central part of Russia and was really Russian, then he could have a very good upbringing.. Do you know that in Russia there was an unspoken rule according to which a man didn't beat anyone who was on the ground and a crowd didn't beat one..only fair fight one-on-one..and mutual respect.

The fights were a crowd of peasants from one village against a crowd of peasants from another village, city on city. The fights were held according to special rules, and indeed, people lying on the ground were not beaten. That's why there is a legend that an English sailor will always win a battle against a Russian sailor. but ten Russian sailors will always beat ten English ones. And I read that those fights were forbidden by the governments in different years and the participants were punished severely. I agree that wrestling was not Russian culture, it came later from the neighbouring smaller nations: from the Caucasus and mongolian peoples.

Judo is shit now. BJJ is better on the mat. The best grapplers are able to have good stand up and ground fighting skills. Modern Judo is a sport. I am a Judo black belt so not talking crap.
