    Here's a funny story of my first memory with Qbert. My father and I went to my uncle's trailer when I was about 5. They went right outside to wash the car or something and my uncle let me play Qbert on his computer. After a while I went to see what my dad and uncle were doing but I couldn't find the door to get outside because in his trailer the walls and door looked alike and there wasn't a knob, but a little metal tab. After about 10 minutes of being stuck in the place I started getting upset and cried. I went back to play on the computer and cried playing Qbert until they finally came back in which all in all was probably 10-20 minutes total! It felt like hours to me.

    Love Q*Bert so much.❤ First video game anyone ever bought for me was Q*Bert on the 2600, my grandma bought it for me at Sears at the beginning of the Crash, so she also grabbed Ms Pac, too. Still have those carts. Played the hell out of the NES version, too.

    Very cool. I think it's great that people are coming back to these classic games and making improvements, etc. Growing up played this in the arcade and 2600.

    These programmers are doing great jobs on this lived old console. I loved 2600 version, the c64 and atari 8bit as well.

    I remember Q-Bert back in the day in the arcades but I rarely played it because I wasn't too good at it. But I had a pal that was great at it and could play for hours in one quarter and amass scores of extras. I have it on the NES but the control is not the best unless you use a NES Advantage. This Atari version isn't half bad it's fairly close considering the console. Good showing and cool video John!👉😃👈

    This looks fantastic! I first played Q*Bert at a roller rink when I was maybe 10 or 11. The cartoony graphics won me over immediately and I pumped every quarter I had into that machine that day. Loved the Parker Bros. version for the VCS as well, but this update seems to fix nearly everything that was weak about the original, especially the sprites and their animations. Truly mind-blowing work.

    Great comparison, and sweet homebrew John! I'm with you in that the Atari VCS/2600 original library Q*bert port was great, but there's nothing wrong with a homebrew which tries to take things even further.

    The Parker Brothers cartridge was released in 1982. Atari didn't release its first 32KB cartridge (Fatal Run) until 1989. To produce a 32KB cartridge in 1982, the retail price would probably have to be at least $100, which would be $315 today.

    Back in the day, my friends all had 8 bit Atari's, but I had a TI-99/4a.
    I was used to them repeatedly commenting on how much better arcade ports were on the 800. Until Qbert.
    Yes, being an unauthorized TI release, there is no GRom support, and is therefor restricted to an 8K cart (so no level-intro animations), but gameplay is arcade perfect, and unlike the 800 version Qbert has eyes! (although sadly, it does not make use of the Speech Synth - a missed opportunity to nudge it up a notch against the competition)
    All of the Parker Bros TI releases are exceptional (even if we had to wait 40 years for Tutankham) but Q-bert is a system-defining arcade-port. If only TI would have supported 3rd party development. One can only imagine what Parker Bros would have offered on the system if they had been licensed to use TI's GRom technology.

    Like you I played it in arcades and then I got it form 2600, still have that cartridge and 2600, also had it on colecovision and also thought at the time this was the best version visually but agreed the 2600 game play is spot on. Also had it on my Atari 600XL then I PS1, one cool version I had was on my Sony Ericsson T630 I actually got that mobile phone just for Q*Bert :) this new atari age version is inane how they could actually code it with all this stuff and the speed on a 2600 in mind blowing. Do they have some behind the scenes info on how they achieved this level on a 2600, really shows how with modern knowledge how good the 2600 could be. amazing Nowadays I buy anything Q*Bert related this is my fav game character of all time.

    • @silviomogno6752
      @silviomogno6752 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cartridge uses an ARM coprocessor to handle game logic and improve graphics generation. Basically the 2600 processor works only to generate the TV picture.

    I must confess I never played Q-Bert as a kid, never even knew about it. I used to play a knock-off on my Amstrad called "Crazy Erbert", so I first saw Q-Bert 3 on the SNES, I thought is was a rip off of Erbert D

    Personally, I like the original 2600 version of Q*bert better than the Atari 5200 or Colecovision versions. Q*bert for the 2600 seems tailor-made for the system - I can't quite explain it... Anyway Parker Bros. games were so excellent. Imo, just as good as Activision games!

    Great video, John. I put a lot of hours into Q-Bert on the Coleco. I think the Coleco's joystick (which gets panned sometimes), was actually really good for arcade ports like this. Can you recommend a good Q-Bert version for a modern console?
