What is your favourite crimping tool? And do you make your own patch cables?

I'm a huge fan of the Platinum Tools "pass-through" style of crimper. Its truly a must-have skill for anyone at any level of networking. I've seen some good and bad crimpers over the years, but am still always on the lookout for something new and better. Had no idea that Knipex was making a crimper. According to their website, their crimper works for "closed and non-closed" housings... guessing that means for "pass-through" housings? They're a great company, maybe they can send me one to sample.

There are two types of RJ45 plug...the best I find is the type where the wires go through the connector and not as the video shows just goes to the plated studs. I also have found that it is best to cut the insulation back from the cable end at 2.5 cm (1 inch) then untanlge and then lay out in the correct order so they are flat. At that point you can cut the end of the wires to be perfectly straight. Then it is easier to push into the plug and see the individual wires exit at the plug end so you can check again the order. Then you crimp and then you clip away excess wire from the end of the plug. That works well for me as if you only have 11.5mm of individual wires it is difficult for me at least to perfectly enter the wires in the correct order in the plug.

There is a newer model (13 last number) which only does RJ45 connectors. They are by far the best wire crimpers I have used!
