  • Today on Buckle Up, Rob goes on a road trip in the new 2023 MG4 EV. Starting at Gridserve in Braintree, Rob drives two hours up to their new charging stations in Norwich. Along the way he'll be kept company by the MG 4, testing it in real world conditions.
    The MG4's main rivals are the VW ID.3, Kia Soul EV, Hyundai Kona EV, Smart #1, Fiat 500 electric, Mini Electric, Cupra Born, ORA Funky Cat and Nissan Leaf, but it will also be up against both Piston and Hybrid rivals such as the VW Golf, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Peugeot 308, Citroën C4, Vauxhall Astra, Skoda Scala, Seat Leon, Fiat Tipo, BMW 1 Series, Mercedes Benz A Class and Audi A3

    This car has really impressed me, my brother in law got his in December and we went to collect it together and did a 170 mile drive back to his home.
    It is easily the best entry level EV you can buy and I can't see it being beaten for a while, it beats my friends ID3 in nearly all areas and is for a much better price.

I've had the car less than a fortnight and this is the first car I've ever met where I can control the heating/AC temperature and fan speed with a couple of flicks of my right thumb without taking my eyes off the road. When you do these reviews the most important thing is to provide accurate information... the Trophy does not have bigger wheels than the SE. The reason for the reduction in range is mainly because of the dual rear roof spoilers affecting the aerodynamics of the car. Just some constructive criticism

    Hi ,I enjoyed your report of the MG4.As regards the oil leak it was mainly confined to some of the earlier models which mine is one of those but fortunately for me I didn't have that problem on my car.It was actually down to a faulty breather valve on the reduction gear box and it was soon rectified by the MG factory on a recall to have a modified breather at the dealership my car included.For the price paid this is a terrific car and is very well built,it's not perfect but what car is,my first EV was the MG zs ev and that was a very good car to drive but the MG4 is something else.Hope to see some of your other EV tests in the future.Kind regards.

    I recently test drove a Trophy. My thoughts as an ID 3 driver:
    MG4 has a very comfortable ride
    Feels quicker than my ID3 but that may be psychological.
    The infotainment screen was useless for me. The text was way too small to read easily. Also, the day was very sunny and all I could see in the screen was a mirror image of my passenger.
    I read somewhere that there is a night setting for the screen which makes it more useable but I didn’t know about that at the time.

    I've got a Trophy on order. I ordered it back on November 20th (I think) 2022 with an indicated 16 week delivery which means it should have arrived yesterday. However the dealer has not been advised that it has a production slot and even when it's built it will take 8 weeks on the sea from China. A further 10 days from port to dealer and probably a few more days to prepare so we're talking ten weeks from build date. I'm not that bothered about the wait even though my previous car is sold and gone I have my trusty van to use. Now the oil leak. The dealer hasn't mentioned this, possibly it's no cost standard fitment ! ! ! ! ! Hopefully they have engineered a cure for this by the tiime they build mine.

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the whole new car industry is in a rut at the moment. Everyone’s having to wait millennia for their cars. I wasn’t aware of the oil leak until I did a bit of digging in the dreaded forums, but yeah, not ideal. Maybe just ask the dealer if there’s been any changes made to make sure it won’t happen on the more recent cars. Thanks for watching!

    Rattles. The second day I had the car I noticed a really annoying rattle when the car went over a rough patch of road. Big sigh. I hadn't noticed it on the way back from the dealer, but maybe I wasn't on a rough road... Fortunately someone on the MG forum piped up before I made an idiot of myself. Have you got sunglasses in the glasses holder? Yes, I had. (Not when I was driving back from the dealer of course.) I moved them to the door pocket and that was the end of the rattle.

    I bought an MG4 about 4 weeks ago. I have no hesitation in saying it's probably the most dangerous car I have ever driven and I have been driving for over 50 years. The lane assist is nothing short of atrocious and although you are able to disable it, it switches back on by default. The steering wheel is almost yanked out of your grip with absolutely no warning. If you are thinking of buying one, check this very carefully and see if you are happy with it.

      @@rogerwilson6367 You get used to disabling it every time you start the car. It's a slight pain, but it's a hell of an improvement on NOT disabling it. The "default to on" wasn't there on the very early models but a software update forced them to do it too. Apparently this is a legal requirement as it's classed as a safety feature.

      @moragkerr9577 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rogerwilson6367 I don't need to remind myself, I just do it. If the Lane Assist logo is not amber on the dashboard, I don't go anywhere. In any case, as I understand it, this isn't an EV issue, it's a New Car issue. New ICE cars have them too and it's a new legal requirement. If this is your only gripe with the MG4 (it won't be!) then you don't have any issue with the car as such.
      I love mine. I've had it just four weeks and I'm back from a trip to Yorkshire in it. About 200 miles each way and some roller-coaster driving on minor roads in the Dales while I was there. I do have some niggles, three or four things which seem to be minor software issues, but I can live with or work around these quite easily.
      And considering the price difference between the MG4 and its competitors, it's giving one hell of a bang for the buck.

      It depends on the speed they're going. In the UK the noise is only required to be made at speeds below 20 km/h, though the RNIB thinks (and we) think this may be a tad low as tyre noise doesn't pick up much until you get to higher speeds.
