I really like when MGK said "i fell in love with an emo girl" then willow said " i fell in love with an emo girl" then they both repeated those same lyrics for the whole second half of the song... i wanted to like this song but the lyrics are just trash.

True, was kind of hard for me to accept at first because it's MGK and I like his music a lot but this track is hot garbage, the hook definitely killed the song.

Omg so can relate when u guys were talking about the emo days. Back then was shit af was so bad that I got even beaten for being emo. Now it's cool. Kids these days wouldn't experience what we been through.
Emo is "cool" now but it's just an aesthetic, not really something based in a music culture like it used to be. Side note Wyatt's jeans story reminds of the time my brother called me from the girls section of PacSun in high school to ask me what size I was because he couldn't find skinny jeans anywhere but the girls section. He is 33 now, for a frame of reference.
I think that it's cool now, but not just as an aesthetic. At least the people that I've seen in this generation who are emo seem to be genuinely emo. Yeah I guess there is a sub section of people who just use it because of the aesthetic. But hey, ig that just makes it even better for the real emos, cause that just means they won't get bullied that much since it's generally more accepted now.
@@mattpunk931 side note to point out that people using the emo aesthetic are not necessarily "fake emos". They just enjoy the fashion style and that's cool as well! Clothes/hairstyles don't have to go attached to music x)
Also, personally I got insulted in the street like 4-5 years ago when I had emo hair (they insulted me for my hair ofc), and people still judge me nowadays when I wear alt outfits. So Idk about the "cool" part either. I mean, definitely a lot more people think it's cool now, but there's still a prejudice there.

Regarding what "emo" was before the 2000s, there were genres like "emocore" (emotional hardcore), midwest emo, and screamo. But none of that stuff had much commercial success, nor was there a strong subculture around it like there was in the 2000s.
It's actually a good track, on my first listen I also didn't like it too much but the more I listen it grows on you

Yeah, I’d say the height of the emo phase was in the 2000s with the rise of MySpace (Tumblr was mostly just a girl and lonely incel guy thing and to me wasn’t really integral in the 2000s emo culture, sorry), then once 2010 rolled around is when it started to go away because Dubstep took over (other EDM genres were prominent, too, but Dubstep was reigning king everywhere in music). Then with the rise of TikTok in around 2019 is when this new emo phase started because e-boys popularized it again, not so much in music like the emo phase of the 2000s but instead with the look and clothing/dressing emo. This new emo wave seems to be more centered on aesthetics rather than the music AND aesthetics of the 2000’s emo phase.

I think it's valid to dislike this song, when I first heard it, I knew people were gonna make fun of the chorus. Me personally, I like the song, but I don't think it deserves as much hate as it's getting, it's insane. Wyatt's the only person I've seen so far that was respectful while describing what he didn't like about it. I agree that the chorus is pretty corny, but it's certainly not terrible. MGK is an insanely talented person, especially at this genre. I feel like the haters were just waiting in the shadows for him to release a single "bad" song so they could strike.

Trap is mostly associated with modern emo culture. Mainly due to how Lil Peep sort of took the whole emo/goth aesthetic and combined it with rap. The song was definitely made with like modern emo lyrics but a classic emo sound. Honestly a good combination👍
