  • @han1075
    @han1075 2 ปีที่แล้ว +142

    I normally don't like when other artists try to "re-interpret" classic solos because it just comes across as the artist doing his own thing in the middle of a classic song. However, I've got to say that you guys killed it here, just like you did on the Stairway video! Every solo was excellent and really did meld Angus' style with each guitarist's soul. Incredibly hard to do, but you pulled it off flawlessly! Great job!

    • @xenixpro
      @xenixpro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In my younger days, I would agree with you. I would try to play a song exactly, or as close as possible. But now, my thinking is covering a song exactly becomes boring. Where's the creativity to make that song fresh? Be creative while still preserving elements so an audience can recognize and still relate to the song. The other plus is to introduce younger audiences, that doesn't know or even care about the song, become interested and appreciate how music is fluid. One example is where I came across someone on TH-cam turn Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" into sounding like heavy metal, keeping elements where it was still recognizable.

    • @Nghilifa
      @Nghilifa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@xenixpro I agree. Playing stuff exactly like the original (especially solos) makes it redundant.

    • @BanBanChi
      @BanBanChi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Nghilifa It not only applies to solos. Take Simon Phillips' playing with Toto after Jeff Porcaro died. The essence of every song is there but it's unmistakably Simon. Same with Kenney Jones after Keith Moon died.
      I'm a drummer that plays some guitar. When "learning" drum parts I never tried to copy everything note by note. I always became a second drummer with the band or a third if Genesis or Allman Bros. When I learn a guitar part I learn the correct chords and structure but I play my own stamp on it. I'm not Alex Lifeson or Jimmy Page. I'm myself and can only play what comes out of my soul.
      The reason I loved this video is because it's their souls, not an imitation.

      @@Raymaster7482 oh yeah for sure. Ricks is probably the least fitting to the song, the second one is original and (IMO) best fitting and the last is just the original solo shuffled around (on a fretless tho so not even mad). So by that metric the first is the worst of the lot.
      But the video premise aside, I think Rick's is the most unique and I just love the sound. There's something about it that I just love, outside the video premise I reckon it's the best, I just flows so well , it incorporates Rick and Angus's styles seamlessly and it isn't blocky like the others.

    There was a bonus in this video for me, and that was to see how a fretless guitar is played. and it doesn't appear to be a lot different than than a fretted neck guitar. because I was thinking about buying a fretless guitar. but I didn't know if it would require a whole new learning curve to play. now I might have to go back and see if that fretless guitar is still available. anyway I thought it was pretty interesting to see the three individual interpretations on how Angus does it. and I have to say that Rick has a unique approach to pentatonic scales.

    I feel like Angus is the Ringo of guitar. He serves the song pretty much perfectly, so it's hard for my brain to reconcile with that solo being anything other than what he plays. All 3 solos were really cool, but I think Bumblefoot's did the best job of evolving the original ideas.

    Great idea Rick! Phil X and Bumblefoot are 2 great guitarists for sure. I think Bumblefoot can do more with a thimble that most can do with a slide.

    To me, re-imaging such a well known solo sounds like a huge challenge, because like Phil said, the original is so ingrained in your head! I mean, how do you improve on perfection? And yet, I really dug all these creative takes.

    • @threezysworld8089
      @threezysworld8089 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're not really improving on it. What you're doing is trying to make something that sounds similar yet different. You do that by slightly tweaking a few variables in the playing and/or processing.

    I'd love to see you tackle one of Pink Floyd's solos, something like Comfortably Numb would be daunting to try and stay away from the original yet a hell of a challenge to keep it within the context of the song.

    You guys did fantastic. Angus already crafted the most suitable solo possible over those bars, so it was a near impossible task to try to do it justice in any original way. But you guys all nailed it -- each solo was representative of your own personal styles while staying true to the song. Talk about walking the line... great job!👍

    I've got to say, you and Phil are hilarious. But, this, as a older guitar player, is my favorite video I've seen. The idea sounds simple. But playing AC/DC, especially back in black, it's like instinct, a reflex action. Your brain muddies up what should be easy.

    All three have passages that feature that fabulous plunky right-hand thing that shapes so much of Angus’s phrase. Not staccato, but each note has this clear beginning and end that make them thick and distinct, like running downs stairs one step at a time. (Totally different style, but George Benson does it as well). I’d love to know if Rick, Phil, and/or Bumblefoot were consciously doing it, or if it just so much a part of a solo like this that it just happened.
