What On Earth Is Going On At Lyon? (2024 Update)

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 29 พ.ย. 2024
- The dominant force in French football during the 2000s, Lyon won seven straight Ligue 1 titles between 2002 and 2008, as well as enjoying famous UEFA Champions League victories against the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool.
Yet this month, despite having a huge fanbase, a state of the art stadium, and a world class academy, Lyon have been handed a transfer ban and a provisional relegation to Ligue 2 by the DNCG.
So, in a rare part two or follow-up video, HITC Sevens takes a second look at the turmoil at Olympique Lyonnais, the broken system of French football, and the chaotic ownership of John Textor.

You know your club is cooked when Alfie has to include "2024 update" in the title.
Hitler reportedly killed himself after seeing “What on earth is going on in the Fürherbunker (1945 edition)” be uploaded
I mean, with Hamburg and Schalke, he could do monthly updates, sooooooo... always think positive
Unfortunately, Textor is the classic American owner who does not care about football or the fans.
He has done a dozen transfers between the 4 teams he owns (Lyon, Crystal Palace, Botafogo, Molenbeek). He is simply playing with money and we ended up spending all our budget on players we didn’t need. Another example of what’s going on is how the club treated our starting GK for the past 10 years, Anthony Lopes. He was a Lyon ultra growing up and he always gave everything for the team, played really well, but he was very outspoken and rumors said Textor wanted to take power away from the influential players with Lyon origins (nicknamed as the Gang des Lyonnais), as they care deeply about to the team and were not just silent employees. So this summer, they cut him from the team, for no apparent reason. Our new GK is talented, but true Lyon fans didn’t forget what the board did to a club legend who was bleeding red and blue. Billionaires who own multiple teams are killing our game, this isn’t a football team anymore, it’s a business enterprise. #AgainstModernFootball
I didn’t watch the video yet, sorry if I repeated some points I just wanted to express my opinion. Thank you for making a video about us.
What he’s done with Botafogo is pretty amazing so it’s working for us at least
Sad to see Textor using Lyon money to go all in with Bottlefogo's potentially failed title chase for the second season in a row
@@drift3426 Botafogo won't win the title BECAUSE of Lyon. If they don't manage to win the Libertadores (the final is in 4 days and they are playing Palmeiras today for the lead) the team will be dismantled and most of the good players will go to Lyon the next season
What do you think of zaha?
Thank you for turning the first quarter of this video into a rant against PSG, the biggest problem in French football for years now. Can't wait for the day the Qataris leave and PSG goes bankrupt.
They'll run out of money sooner or later
I’m assuming you’re working in “wtf is going on at City” as we speak Alfie 😂
Hope so 😂😂😂
Don't be silly. It's just 4 games FFS.
@@johnandrews8590 👋
@@johnandrews8590 Five, actually
For now just a dip in form me thinks... there's nothing behind the scenes (yet at least) like usually happens with the clubs featured in these videos
The mention of Sylvinho made me think a video on ‘the 7 most disastrous managerial tenures’ would be really interesting. Focused on long term damage caused by stints in charge and managerial decisions, not necessarily just the worst in terms of results.
As a Palace supporter, the faster he sells his stake in the club the better. Although the players probably wouldn't admit it, I think the ownership stuff is having an effect on all the players and staff which is being reflected in lack of confidence on the pitch this season.
I feel you bro, let’s hope we all get rid of Textor soon 🙏
You're a Championship team who's been clinging onto Premier League status for the last 11 years. Behave yourself and be a bit more grateful.
You should make a video about Panathinaikos F.C.
15 years without league win for a club that played in final of C.L and 3 times at semi finals.
Would be interesting to do an investigation.
Surely we just need a "What On Earth Is Going On In France" at this point...
France is a footballing anomalie, Great nation side & a league as dyer as League 2
Ironically he has done one as well
Keeping an eye on the Mbappe situation with that. The seeds of drana were planted with a suspected rift with Giroud. His energy with Madrid is getting iffy. If he fails to produce for France in the near future, it will be hell for that national team, unless players like Thuram and others step up.
@@Thomao Don't worry about french national team. they are the best nation in this century
@boogy1033 The past is great. We live in the present though. Spain laughs at France right now.
Love that the first half of the video is mainly complaining about PSG
Even though we are not that much better at managing players.
i don't think you realize how bad PSG ruined french football, even global football
Can you do one of these with Ghana? Feels like them not qualifying for AFCON is like Germany not qualifying for the EUROs
Fng did a 20 min video on Ghana yesterday
Request for a video on Celtic’s Lisbon Lions, the Treble winning team from 1966/67. First British and Northern European team to win the European Cup, beating Inter Milan with all players being born within a 30 mile radius from Celtic Park.
What I don't really get with Lyon is their ridicoulus spending patterns, they were already in a financial hole and decided to fork out 30+ million for an average defender in Niakathe from Forest, whilst Forest brought in Murillo and Milenkovic for cheaper. its insane how they spend money they don't have on avereage players smh
PSG have done so much harm to Ligue 1, it's crazy. That said, poor club management can't all be blamed on PSG,
Wtf are you talking about ? the english and spanish clubs did harm ligue1 they steal all the best players from ligue 1, and the league can't compete with others leagues because of that. Without Psg france wouldn't have 5 teams in europe competition
the worst part about this is that this problem is directly affecting the Brasileirão
True. But again you seem to mistake the club rather than the owner as the reason for this
What on earth is going on at Roma
Oh yeah, a video on Roma would be nice yes
Sacked Mourinho, sacked DDR, sacked Juric and will now ride with Ranieri until the end of the season I guess. All that whilst spending "big" in the summer. Crazy time for that club
Another case of American ownership
How about a "What On Earth Is Going On At Dundalk?" video. From dominating Irish football in the 2010s, locking horns with Rapid Vienna, Arsenal and Molde in the 20/21 Europa League to relegation in the League of Ireland and staring into a financial abyss in 2024.
A smaller club than what you normally cover but would go a long way to understanding Irish football governance and the downfall of the national team in the last two decades (more so than your video about how Delaney ruined Irish football).
Best German players in the premier league of all time. (Day 701)
Alternativly you could do "Best German players who played outside the Bundesliga" or something like that if you prefer.
I will not give up until the video is made or Alfie himself tells me to stop. Everyone else telling me that will be ignored.
If you don't believe my number, just go back to the previous videos. I'm at the bottom most of the time, but I'm there.
I really do respect your grind man!
Definetly has to do this
I think something like best players to never play in their domestic leuges from top 5 nations would be better
@@RyuzakiTaiyou Respect I will also continue asking a Ghana video until Alfie tells me to stop or the video is made
I love how this had the mis-spelling of alternative the entire time
You may need to wonder French football stability for most part. It's insane to see how French football cycled between glories and messes and still produced a world class NT.
That’s because their catchment areas are absolutely vast, half of the continent of Africa is practically one of them
@@e-money9251correct bro
France's national team is Africa united
@@e-money9251 what catchment area are you talking about lmao, 95% are born in France it's not like they are some animals catched on the jungle, y'all base your opinions on ideologies while not even making some research about france and especially paris suburb, which produces a lot of professional players, y'all should check that, really.
@@wtpc6370 and you are waffling rn, I never said anything about them being born in africa. It’s the fact that many if not most of their best produce have their roots in africa and therefore provide them with incentive to keep accepting migrants hence the “catchment areas”
As unstable as the clbus are, their academies are rock solid. and as a huge nation with densely populated cities, there's a big pond to fish in.
Last time I was this early, I thought this Channel was ran by Todd Cantwell
Please make video on Ghana's downfall ,especially now that they are out of the AFCON
Great video but one correction. Les Gones is their nickname not because of their academy, it's just the slang term for lyonnais people. It does means kid in Lyonnais slang but outside of the region it just means lyonnais people.
i’ve literally never been more excited more a video since i heard the news
Is a shame what's going in French football, they should follow the German modal 49 + 1 rule thing
When thinking about the multi-club model in vogue at the moment I am reminded of Ian M Banks's quote about Out Of Context Event: 'an event that most civilizations encounter once in their history and that is similar to a sentence encountering a full stop.'
Crazy to see the fact John Textor was the main problem for Lyon.
What's more interesting is that the other club whose major shareholders are belonged to Textor also had their own debacles. Crystal Palace were still in contention of fighting themselves for the relegation, while Botafogo potentially had the 2nd bottlejob in terms of title race in a row (they are playing against Palmeiras for the league, while also having the Libertadores Final against Atletico Mineiro a few days later).
I’ve been waiting for this …this truly is the people’s Chanel
The way football clubs are run, Alfie would soon need to work a hundred hours a week to keep up
You could probably do a "What on Earth is going on in France" video right now...
Video idea: 7 greatest ever players who never had a transfer fee.
it already exists: th-cam.com/video/58NHV13UIO4/w-d-xo.html
Wow just watching this now Alfie really grateful to see my comment in the video 👍 I will now watch the rest of the video which I am positive as always will be fantastic.
Have a good day Alfie
Alfie thank you, you really are the man of culture. 👍🤲👏
Who is looking out for the sport? Allowing clubs to be owned by nation states and oligarchs who pump ridiculous money into clubs is slowly killing the competitiveness in the sport and bankrupting clubs trying to keep up. We all know no one will do anything about it though it's too late now.
Not to mention billionaires who don't give a shit and multi club ownership.
Would you consider making a What On Earth Is Going On video about Red Bull Salzburg? They won 10 Austrian titles in a row between 2014 and 2023 but failed to win it last season and they’re currently 6th in the Austrian Bundesliga, 14 points behind 1st place Sturm Graz. They’ve also been rather poor in the Champions League and just lost 5-0 to Leverkusen.
They only got 1 win in the Champions League this season, which was against Feyenoord, as well as even losing to the likes of Sparta Prague, Brest, and Dinamo Zagreb.
Textor basically killed every team he owned
Except botafogo.... Which is now brazillian spurs
Bro as a Botafogo fan dont say that to me
Because botafogo is the only team he owns with his own money and in witch he has something to lose@@Slinguh1111
@@Slinguh1111 We'll see, might win a title yet
@@splashnskillz37 They were now in a Libertadores Final. We'll see.
The expenditure in the last 20 years has crazy. No wonder, more than ever, many teams are either bankrupt or on the verge of bankruptcy. There needs to be a cap on player payment and transfers. How much does a player need to live comfortably??
This is why we follow and love Alfie. HERE WE GO!!
Hey Alfie thanks for the update :D
Just a small thing: the french AU (as in Aulas) is pronounced O as in Owen. (the same goes for Aubameyang, Aurier etc.)
You reminded me of this one Sky analyst who pronounced Aubameyang as Oo-boo-me-yang and I've never been able to get that out of my head
I mean it's still better than how he pronounced Aulas in the last video, where he said it like the German ö if I remember correctly lol
Because of the so many business people getting into football ownership there's gonna so many case studies with regards to owning football clubs and I think Alfie's work will be like the most cited source on some grad student's paper.
Need a what is going on at Ghana next time
bein did a simillar shady deal with match broadcasting rights in turkey
At long last, been waiting on this to drop🎉
I absolutely did not expect to see Jey Uso in one of Alfies videos.
Yeet
D24: 7 best female footballers of all time
I'd like to see that, tho I'd admit to bias being from🍁😸🤷🏾♂️
Pretty soon PSG will be the only club in French top flight.
Need a video on their division rivals Montpellier later on, especially if their performance doesn't improve.
Looks like they will get relegated after 13 years in the first division.
Alfie lad! What about "Top 7 Big Game Players", players who always put in MOTM performances in the big occassions
Too many idiots confuse the French national teams' success with their league, which is atrocious. They have only won the UCL/European cup once. England has produced 6 clubs that have won it. 4 of those by the early 80's which is still a record by itself. I wish people would stop talking about French club football as if failure is a surprise. Scotland has won as many UCL trophies...
I forgot about Alexander lack of threat until I saw the thumbnail
Lackofthreat🤝 Gabonese Jamie vardy 😂
#thepeopleschannel a video on the Bangladesh premier league and the rise of Bashundhara kings would be good
A team who went into the top flight after promotion and won the last Six league titles now!
Are they the next fc Bayern? Are they a team to keep a eye on next few years? Thanks Alfie 😊
Great vid as per. Let me drop my unwanted idea of the 7 most Promising Managers in World Football
What on earth is going on at Kochi United?
Textor did something weird wit Botafogo. Until now he mostly focused on Botafogo, with some success as they might win the league and the libertadores. Most of the Lyon sales went to Botafogo budget. With the end of the Brasilian season, this time Textor should send Brazilian money to Lyon this winter. A team reaching the final of the libertadores will surely do some good sales.
Hey there, great video! I see you must follow Molina with some of the details.
Question: you said you were on Bluesky, but yet i cant find you on there.
Cheers from a French guy lost in Missouri
I don’t know if it is mentioned in the video (haven’t watched it jet) but the fact that french clubs are gonna be paying 13% of their tv income for as long as they are in ligue 1 and basically nothing for is absolutely insane
Thought that was Thierry Henry in the thumbnail till I read the name 🤦
Please do "what's going in in Edinburgh"
Relegation is what’s going on in Edinburgh
Time for 'What on earth is happening at Maccabi Tel Aviv'.
No way you even mentioned a club from war-torn country!
PSG really have destroyed the other French teams
I’ve been waiting for this ine
Alfie can you please make a video on the 7 best assistant managers of all time xx
How's you Alfie boy? Suggestion 7 best players in each position ever and ultimate 11 for the (top six) premier league clubs maybe include hull city to make it 7 clubs 👍🏻
Don't do yourself down, Alfie. You're just as handsome now as you were in 2023!
what on earth is going on at boavista youtube boy
35:57 it's not correct - he was sold to Molenbeek from Danish side FC Nordsjælland, then loaned out to Lyon, and then sold to Lyon
1:14 what an opportunity to insert Danny Drinkwater's pic
It’d be awesome if you could make a video on Kosovo and its rise in football the past 10 years, especially considering how recent their war with Serbia is.
I put some Lyonnais on my sandwich the other day, it was delicious
Second request to make a video about FC Twente
I watched them versus Rangers, they looked great.
"When I last talked about them" ❌
"When I last spoke about them" ✅
can we call swinging a multi girlfriend relationship model?
it certainly looks more professional on your CV and will earn you points for managing inside a stressful environment
Thought of a video idea. How come penalty shootouts in ecenta years have been longer in major tournaments such like the europa league final in 2021 and the 2022 carabao cup and fa cup finals.
Recent years
"having budgeted for a billion euro tv deal" just doesn't sit right with me.... Spending money you don't have yet doesn't seem like the best idea. Especially in football....
Alfie with the recent news that MARK ROBINS is to be replaced by FRANK LAMPARD!
It got me thinking, what are the greatest managerial downgrades in history?
Would love to see what you come up with on this front! Is Coventry's change even as bad as I think? Are there some examples where an initial downgrade has actually ended up working out for the better for club and manager?
7 of the best naturalized players!
Should do a video on blackburn rovers arw down fall in last 15 years has been scary

Not the first and won't be the last French club to go this way. Bordeaux, Sochaux so far. Now Lyon
To a Yorkshireman much of this video sounds like you are bemoaning the chronic mismanagement of Lyon FC by your missus

If PSG had been forced to pay a 50% transfer tax, French football would have been saved
Sounds incredibly like KV Ostende, who was also owned by an American investment fund & built a basketball arena & went bust this June!
Now Botafogo is bottling in Brazil, Textor needs to sell all of his teams.
The Seattle Reign NWSL team, which he owned, he pissed off the players so much, Rapinoe (with help from the MLS Sounders) straight up bought the team.
7 Best players to never play in their domestic league from top 7 nations, this list has some massive names such as Verratti and griezmann.

@@nabodabo1235was gon say robin gosense for germany. Went and checked to be sure and forgot he finally played in the bundesliga last year lol.
Kinda odd to me that Ligue 1 has always been the fifth best league, I suppose the French speaking parts of the rest of the world, with the exception of Quebec, aren't very wealthy so broadcast deals would make less, but surely French cities like Lyon or Montpellier or Strasbourg have enough brand image overseas for some marketing for their clubs. Is rugby taking fans away from soccer cos of Antione DuPont and the World Cup?
PSG is the worst thing to happen to French football, at least the great Chelsea are boosting one of their clubs.
Ligue 1 in General is cooked ever since they sold their rights to Mediapro in 2018.
