  • In this video, I'll walk you through how I mount my comms gear in a 2016 Jeep JK Wrangler. We'll mount a Panasonic CF-20 Toughbook tablet, FTM-6000R radio head, GoPro and iPhone. Will all the gear hold when we hit a 4x4 trail?

      My pleasure. It was a great test run. I didn't show it in the video, but I found two bugs in EmComm Tools related to the GPS integration while running some tests on the trail. It was a good morning. 73

      Welcome to the channel, James. I am a new ham myself, so I am glad that you're finding value. The next video will be perfect for you, "Effective VHF Comms - How far can you talk?"

    I had to switch to the laptop to comment. A friend referred a lot of us to your channel for the very illuminating video about what NVIS looks like. Exceptional. I really liked this one as well, because your video style is so straightforward: solid information - presented logically and with superb video and audio - no damn music to distract me - well edited - and relevant subject matter!! You've raised the bar. Catch you on JS8 when the bands are with us. KF0BSQ

      Good afternoon, Kevin. I appreciate you taking the time to stop by the channel and comment. Your comment is high praise. To be honest, I struggled getting into this hobby and nearly gave up two years ago. So, I am glad to hear that a newbie like myself has something useful to contribute. This channel is mostly about documenting and sharing my experience along the way. For example, NVIS made zero sense to me when I was studying for my General. Thanks again and welcome to the channel.

      If you enjoyed the NVIS video, you may enjoy this 40m NVIS test I did last year. Several hams on HF told me that what I was doing was not possible. th-cam.com/video/P6uowKWtWbY/w-d-xo.html

    I did a similar thing and used an X grip to mount my TX-500 in my truck. I went with a full laptop mount for my CF-20. Paired it all with a 20m hamstick and participated in WFD yesterday as a mobile station. I am really happy with the setup and was able to make a Vara Winlink connection while driving. Excited to play around some more in the field.

      Glad to hear I'm going in the right direction with this build. Did you opt for the small or large X-Grip for use with the TX-500 head? Which CF-20 mount did you buy? Winter Field Day for the win! 73's

      @@TheTechPrepper The large one X Grip. Holds it perfectly. For the computer I got a Mobotron MS-426 from Amazon. It was pretty wobbly with my boat anchor CF-31 but is much better with the CF-20. I'm sure the RAM one is significantly better, but this was half the price which still was a decent chunk.

    The Vector OffRoad JKE-Dock is definitely a must have for a JK. It gets expensive when you add up all the mounts, but it's rock solid.

      Will do. All of the updates are free on buymeacoffee.com/thetechprepper. I try not to release too many public videos on TH-cam as there tend to be a lot of application previews and current development focus. I will be doing an update next month as I've added a ton of new features.

    I had the same vibration issue as your laptop with my FTM-400 control head using a similar ball mount. The lever arm created by the ball connector just isn't able to control the vibration. You would need a support for the tablet end. So I am not using the ball mount system until I figure out a support at the control head end.

    Really nice setup with the camera and tablet. Is that bar that crosses the dash tied into your roll bar or the A pillar?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. It mounts into 3 factory screws on the dash. You have to remove the center cubby and remove to plastic inserts on both sides near the windshield.

    • @ebikeengineer
      @ebikeengineer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheTechPrepper Nice. I have my X Ram bolted to the center tray on my LJ. It's great for my Android phone, not a large tablet. For my case I have a bar that runs along the windshield up top for mounting radios.

    Awesome! Have you come across any ram compatible HT mounts in your research? I just picked up a Toyota tacoma and have been looking at the ram mount track system...have not ventured into looking at the device mounts yet

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the Lido cup holder mount: LM-801-AMP. I didn't realize it is an AMPS compatible as I did this install 18 months ago. I'm going to try it with AMPS RAM mount. In general, I love the cup holder mount. Nothing permanent.? I need to start checking into the OH Winlink Net. See you next Wednesday!

    Does the bar or items attached to it block any airbags? I'd hate for me or a passenger to eat a tablet/phone/radio, etc. in the event of a collision.
    I bought the X-mount for my phone. As it turns out it will also hold an Icom IC-7100 head unit perfectly.

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The JKE-Dock does not obstruct the airbags, however, you need to be careful not to mount any devices in a way that obscures the airbags. I have everything mounted in away that does not block the airbags. For example, if I move the tablet to the right, in front of the passenger seat, then yes it would get in the way.

    Will you keep the Kenwood in the jeep along with the Yaesu?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Kenwood D710 is a much more capable radio compared to the Yaesu FTM-6000, so the Yaesu will spend very little time in the Jeep. I'm planning on running an audio interface cable from the Kenwood to the CF-20. I'll will likely run the FTM-6000 manpack in the RV using RAM mounts.
