    HNK2 is some of my favorite anime series. I wish that some plot elements were changed, but I loved the island of the Shura, Kaioh, Shatchi was a cool character, the entire Shura culture was cool and coulve been explored alot more. I also prefer the rocky terrain and sea settings to the singular desert wasteland backdrop. I noticed that they always made the sky cool colors in HNK2. Tons of scenes with purple, orange, yellow skies. Fun shit

    Looking back, I don't know if Kaioh was ever *meant* to surpass Raoh's popularity or importance in the story. He's meant to be similar to Souther more than Raoh, I feel. While Raoh was definitely more charismatic and willing to fight for his ideals on the battlefield with his men, Kaioh deliberately kept himself hidden in the shadows (he viewed himself after all, as a demon), use manipulation and cowardly tactics, and hardly ever showed an ounce of humanity for anyone besides himself. He killed his own sister to manipulate Hyoh into fighting with Kenshiro because he was hoping Ken and Hyoh would kill each other, took Lin for himself because he wanted an heir that was of the Hokuto and Gento bloodlines (willing to probably even rape her to have a child with her). Kaioh essentially represents the worst within humanity, and more specifically, what a man should be. It's only until Kenshiro decides to really break him down like he did with Souther, do you see Kaioh's humanity emerge.
    Like with Souther, Kenshiro dismantles the demonic aspects of Kaioh, as Kaioh starts to lose his armor as the battle goes on, and begins to fight more honorably once he realizes he can't defeat Kenshiro in a cowardly or manipulative fashion. You start seeing flashbacks regarding Kaioh's past, and you start seeing what started to break him mentally, from losing his mother to being forced to hide his potential so Hyoh could be the successor of the Hokuto Soke style, etc. etc. Kenshiro realizes that the tragedy of their origins was what caused Kaioh to become the demon Kaioh rather than Kaioh the man. Because of Hyoh and Kenshiro being trapped inside of a burning building (not sure if it was just Ken), Kaioh lost his mother, and eventually because Jukei sent Raoh and Toki with Kenshiro to Ryuken, Kaioh lost his brothers, including the brother he was closest to, Raoh; because of this, Kaioh had to devote his life to serving Hyoh. Ken realizes this, and feels partly responsible, since what happened to Kaioh could have very well happened to him. He gives Kaioh a merciful defeat in turn because to Kenshiro, Kaioh was a family friend led astray.
    This is why when Kaioh asks Kenshiro why Ken would show him mercy, Kenshiro says "because you were once a friend too." We end up seeing this in action once Hyoh dies in Kaioh's arms, and he reverts back to a child-like state. Kaioh's death is kind of similar to Raoh's and Toki's in that he died as a man standing up on his feet, but it's a death brought upon by shame rather than by glory (Raoh) or out of peace of mind (Toki). Kaioh is just meant to be a shameful part of the history of the Hokuto Soke, as had he been given equal treatment to Hyoh in terms of successorship to the Hokuto Soke and Ryuuken styles, he may very well have stayed on the side of good. Story-wise, not many knew of him unless they were in the land of Shura (which is China in the HnK world), and given how secretive he was, I doubt anyone really knew his true origins that he didn't already kill. As for the fanbase, I think a lot of people tend to draw a lot of comparisons between Raoh and Kaioh, and don't realize that both characters are completely different characters in their own right in terms of origin and motivation.

Also if you do wanna conclude the series with the games I highly reccommend FoTNS Lost Paradise. • @InfernosReaper
    @InfernosReaper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Gento arc was a bit of a stretch, in credibility, but not that much of one. It just needed to be fleshed out a little better. It seems like the goal was to express that Shinken & Nanto were allied specifically to deal with other comparable forces, like Gento. Meanwhile, Gento strikes once they learn of how badly ravaged Nanto & Shinken have been by the infighting and Jako's rise to power in the Gento lands.
    The Asura arc *could* have worked if it didn't try to shoehorn in a villain with ties to Raoh & Toki and have Kenshiro be part of a fated Hokuto bloodlines feud. If Kaioh had been the long lost brother of Kenshiro, Souther, or even Jagi, it would've worked well, since we didn't have an established background for their childhoods other than "orphans adopted to learn a martial art."
    *Souther's brother would've been perfect, because you could still keep all those lines about a "foolish brother who was vanquished because of love" and it would make a lot more sense than spouting them about Raoh.
    *Imagine if Jagi had a brother who could actually fight well. It would really highlight just how much Jagi's failings are his own fault. It would also show what the fight against Jagi *could* have been like if Jagi didn't have his entitled mindset.
    *Hyou was fine enough as a #2, but could've been great as a #1. Hyou vs Kenshiro had a lot more weight than Kenshiro vs Kaioh, even though that was the harder fight. It kinda stole a lot of the thunder from the Kaioh fight, which tried to have emotional weight but fell a bit flat.
    Also, that 1% male survival rate from fighting only seems to apply to men who chose to be warriors, which explains the "rags" people and doesn't even seem to be consistently applied or might have just be a myth to scare people. Hell, the masked Asura initiate(s) might just be elites who guard from invaders and the rumors of them just being trainees is just to scare off would-be attackers.
    That would've been a fine explanation for that initial explanation that wasn't supported by what we would see past the coastal area.

    • @snkeveryday6240
      @snkeveryday6240  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wow, that's interesting, I hadn't even thought about that. Souther's brother, hmmm? Yes, I agree that would work a lot better. Still there is the idea that he has the imperial blood running through him and he seemed to be raised alone with that old master of his, but still, that would work a whole lot better than Raoh's older brother.
      I mentioned this in my second FOTNS vlog but Buronson's favorite character is Jagi. So a Jagi that could actually fight would also be a better twist.
      Haha, yes, a 1% male survival rate is just wildly inconsistent with the people that you see just milling around Shura who do not seem to be warriors, and that is kind of my point about things being a little double-edged and not fully-fleshed out. Still though, FOTNS is a gem to me because it is its own unique thing in a manga/anime world where everything is so pre-packaged and cookie-cutter.

      @@snkeveryday6240 Interesting that his favorite character is Jagi. They did a great job of making him so eminently hateable and irredeemable. Jagi was such a self-destructive and corruptive though short-lived demon but he commanded enough of a presence in the few short episodes he was around that he is nearly as memorable as Toki, Raoh, or Shin.
      As far as the 1% thing goes, ya, how would a nation even function like that? How would rebels like Rock's gang have survived in a world of absolute zero tolerance for anything outside Kaioh's cult of personality? How did Hyoh's #1 serve with distinction and respect Hyoh so much in spite of his evil if he was more kind-hearted and compassionate? Even with Hokuto Ryuken, how does a hot-headed and amateurish hot shot like Shachi survive hand-to-hand battles in a place where super-elite fighters are the *baseline* opponent? Lots of questions.

    HnK 2 had issues with over-the-top survivability of Kenshiro and Falco (impaling by car-size spears to the chest, cutting one's leg off by choice in a world where hospitals and modern medicine don't exist), the tacked-on supernatural aspect to Lin's character and the Celestial Emperor, Lin even as an adult reprising her role as flag to be captured and saved, etc. But its biggest problem in my mind was how it set up Shura and the characters that were sacrificed to force the rest of this second series to its end.
    Falco going from a man facing down/turning away Raoh and the ultimate warrior of Gento Kouken, to a man barely able to beat the first literally nameless Shura warrior he comes across was one of the worst excesses of the writer(s). Falco had soooo much more potential and was just tossed aside out of convenience. The tragedy was not what happened to him in the story; it's what happened to him before the art cells were even drawn. The rest wasn't terrible; it just wasn't as deep or flowing as the first series.

    • @snkeveryday6240
      @snkeveryday6240  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Falco was a good character and had a lot of potential. It reminds me of what they would often do in Dragonball where they would set up a supervillain throughout a long series, then at the beginning of the new series they would have someone come in and blow them away immediately to show how everything has leveled up (i.e. Trunks comes out of nowhere and blows away a mecha-Frieza). They wanted to show that Shura was a step up even if it didn't make logical sense.

    • @realamericannegro977
      @realamericannegro977 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Falco bit is one of my biggest grips. They could have atleast gave him a sickness that was slowly killing him rather than that nameless Shura bs.

    Some points:
    -On the unfinished English release of the manga version of _Fist of the Blue Sky_ ( _Soten No Ken_ ) by the now-defunct Gutsoon Entertainment, Nobuhiko Horie is credited as the writer and Buronson was credited as the advisor.
    -If I'm not mistaken, the name "Toki" also means "aura." I'm probably just reaching, but I think that might be a play on Toki being a Christ-like figure in the world of _Fist of the North Star_ (_Hokuto No Ken_ ). Also, "Ryuken" literally translates to "dragon fist" or "dragon sword".
    -On the subject of _Hokuto No Ken 2_ : Maybe Buronson, Hara, and Horie ran out of ideas? At the end of the day, the franchise is basically _Mad Max_ meets _Mortal Kombat_ , except the characters that get killed stay dead, LOL.
    Great video.

      I heard they wanted to end it at Roah but thr popularity made them stretch it. Great ending still. I feel like Ken should have married Lin. Bart didnt deserve her so they basically gave a bs reason why they end up together.

    About there being more fighting styles, volume 1 also had Rakan Niohken, a style that was said to be banned. Most of the Nanto schools are also only seen in expanded universe content, to be fair.

  • @SpScarletSpider
    @SpScarletSpider 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Also, regarding the Hokuto Soke bloodline; I imagine that the reason why others who weren't part of this bloodline were taught Hokuto Shinken or Ryuuken was out of a need for training partners, or in the event that someone from the Hokuto Soke bloodline couldn't measure up to the mantle of successorship or if the Hokuto Soke bloodline ended in some way. Koryu, Jagi, Han, Shachi, Jukei, etc. aren't part of the Hokuto Soke bloodline, for example. All that said, the actual martial arts of Hokuto Shinken and Ryuuken need to be passed on no matter what, so those strong enough or those that have potential are still required for the arts to be passed on down to the next successors. The way the successorship for these martial arts work, the Hokuto Soke bloodline will still be the most favored, while the others are an insurance policy to keep Hokuto Shinken and Ryuuken alive.

Because I’m just really happy that you’re active again and I understand that it takes time to create content and to work it around your daily life. So I’ll be patiently waiting and supporting you to the end. And as far as Lost Paradise is considered, I’d say it’s pretty stellar. The gameplay, the story, and the characters are what’s expected of FoTNS. Even if there are little quirks and nitpicks I have with the game. But I’m still interested to see how the continue the story of their universe and add some more fan favorites. So I’d recommend picking it up when you have time. Personally (and I'm likely not alone) I disagree with the notion of anime characters not actually being Japanese. It's noticeable in manga & anime that a character meant to be a foreigner will be drawn to look extremely different from the majorly Asian cast 12:37 Case in point (Leme tell ya, brotherrr!). I do get the exotic naming of the characters, though. I was under the impression that the names were possibly meant to invoke imagery of ancient Chinese warlords.
