Macross 2. It's like that one cousin who hides in the corner and doesn't talk to the relatives but when he gets home he has tons of friends and is really liked.
The theme of Macross has always been that love, music and culture beats war. That's why the pop idols are such a big part of it. In that context, it's hard to make fun of.
Robotech was enjoyable and arguably a milestone in bringing more serious localization to the west but they really need to let the Macross entries beyond Plus get their release outside of Japan. Macross 7 especially...
BennettThe Sage- the Reason they use the minmay attack was when they did it in DYRL it was Mimmay's song that changed the hearts of the Zentradi forces, something wethin the Macross facilitated this change of heart. In Macross II they encounter a race or Micronians than use song as a weapon, and their Minmay attack no longer is effective.
Bennett the Sage - Its Easy for Hibiki to have mistaken Istar for a Meltran (meltrandi female )as the look is Similar to the Meltrandi female and Zentradi Males incorporated into Human society at the End of Macross series and DRYL. but, Ishtar is a Marduk an off shoot of human like aliens, who know of the True Function of the macros. Spoilers - the Macross was a stolen Meltrandi ship .
The barber/hairdresser has an incredibly soothing voice to me. But I find ASMR-worthy voices in the strangest places anyway, so I guess it's not too surprising.
Bennett the Sage - Did you ever watch Macross or DYRL. spoilers - Everyone on planet Earth is Dead, the Zentradi saw to it. and there might have been a few survivors here there and the Moon was intact. but it was when Macross came back they rebuilt everything repopulated the Earth with micron Zentradi and the people on the Macross.
FIghting people with JPop is like the uber version of battle drums. Its able to dumb down your enemy while rallying your troops. In other words : MMMMULTIKILL.
9:33 There is something interesting about depicting an alien having a very different cultural understanding of music then how humans do, that could make for a good scifi story. Her being freaked out by the apparent dissonance between the people and the sound had potential.
15:30. When u said it like that make me feel like the soldiers r like real life dedicated fan who found no reason to do anything in the concert if their favorite idol isn’t there 😆
I was thinking a similar thing. The ship was 70 years old at the time of Macross II (and sounding like it's been unused for most of that time), and floppies were still considered normal tech for the time when the original Macross events took place, which the ship launched in 2009. As I recall, the SDF-1 had crashed on Earth in '99. Now to really overanalyze it, one could argue that with the 10 years rebuilding the ship, at whatever point the computers were put in, ripping them out and replacing them midway through the 10 year rebuilding of the ship might have been too costly, and there could have been hardware/software compatibility concerns.
I feel like there's plenty of room to replace the generic pop song alien lady sings with even better stuff, like a TH-cam Poop or anime crack deal. . . . I just want to lip sync her to Black Skinhead.
Yeah, I still get a major case of the rages whenever I hear Celine Dion; it's all my school mates would listen to for a while and it made me regret having ears sometimes. Totes understandable that they would Hulk out.
18:58 It should have been Frozens let it go. you be surprised on how much of a blood frenzied rage it'll put into everyone (And trust me I work at a Retail store that plays that song constantly and I hear customers saying "Turn that shit off before I stab a puppy" myself included)
BennettTheSage - hibiki fins Ishtar because the Macross fortress brought them togeather. that the power of the SDF-1 Macross, its not its weapons as we see later , its the Power of Love.
"-war is fought via j-pop..." My reaction/thoughts were immediately "Ok, I guess he means there's a lot of lazers/lights and they play j-pop sounding music over the footage of a bloody-battle taking place with gundams or something, yeah?"... ... ...... *hand in front of my mouth, to cover the agape-smile... and gasp* "No... he was being literal." LMAO Like, I wish I was recording my reaction, lol.
Yep that is how it is done in Macross. And it gets even sillier installments in the franchise as the singers are on the battle field with a jet pack built into their costumes so they can fly around singing.
To be fair, in the first series, humanity was fighting aliens who didn't have any sort of culture and fought because they were supposed to, so they used music and the sort to confuse and convert the enemy... not sure why they keep doing it though.
1:55 Oh dear, I've gone cross-eyed. 3:02 Sounds brilliant! Makes the enemies blow their own brains out to not have to listen to that. Why don't we weaponize anti-war songs on this planet?
After watching this review, I'm kind of glad I didn't spent the few bucks I had as a teen on this DVD, I recall seeing it often in stores and being tempted to get it since I knew the reputation of the series, would had been quite a letdown.
Always thought that Macross reliance on music as a core element of it's lore is what has always held it down. Sure it makes it stand out a bit, but at the end of the day it's a niche of a niche. Too small to grow. Not to mention that eventually your fans will age out of J-Pop.
I really enjoy the Macross series, even the silliness of 7 (thought I was disappointed in Delta), but I got halfway through the first episode of Macross II and noped out. I didn't like it at all. I think it was Hibiki that really killed it for me, I could not stand that little twerp.
This was the first anime I ever owned. What amazed me was how it predicted 9/1, people were complacent before it happened, and we have two towers falling over.
Macross 2. It's like that one cousin who hides in the corner and doesn't talk to the relatives but when he gets home he has tons of friends and is really liked.
i am that cousin
lokey478 That's honestly a really great description for it! It's not the most regarded entry in the franchise, but it still has no shortage of love.
Random
I would totally watch an anime about a literal war between pop singers
I am still waiting for the demolition man prequel, about the franchise wars
@@TheNzFox are you regretting making that wish yet?
Wendy Ryders's songs were the highlight of the series for me, I think she is an underappreciated idol in the Macross franchise.
I understand the same actor as mustache used this as his demo reel to get cast as the Elcor in the Mass Effect games 😉
Badassfully: You win the internet.
😆😂😆😂😆😂
"incompatently an elcor "
“Shock: I can’t unhear it now”
Feff was actually very progressive among the Marduk since he tried to convert Hibiki into his war hound
I love Macross 2. Obari took the plank of following up the most beloved anime at the time. It's a hard act to follow.
Got to admit. Laughed my tits off at, "Smell this rag..."
The theme of Macross has always been that love, music and culture beats war. That's why the pop idols are such a big part of it. In that context, it's hard to make fun of.
Nope only make it easier since all that hippie shit has long been disproven
Harmony Gold 's only got four more years until their expiration date in 2021-2022
The sooner harmony gold dies the better the world will be. Hopefully they will go to the same place in hell that gawker and bad reality tv shows are.
The future is now.... and Harmony Gold has retained the rights to Macross for a long time to come. Bummer I know.

The Marduk fleet was epic and Dennis was the gruff sage character. 9:37 Ishtar thought hard rock would inspire battle rage in the Zentraedi
Dat thumbnail, though

Before I gained access to the internet the whole Macross and Robotech thing confused the hell out of me as a little kid.
You know, the death song worked out really well.
I remember liking this anime. And then this review reminded me of the bedroom scene between Hibiki and Ishtar. Yeesh.

All in the span of 80 years!? XD

10 people are Melmacks.
Saving the day with "Your boss is a dick". Nice. XD
I'm glad these are being re-uploaded always enjoy watching your videos =D
You know, the irony at the time this video was released (2009?) the us military was still using windows XP and floppy disks
I was thinking a similar thing.

5:30 Super Kami Guru, is that you??!?
9:32 okay but that song actually kicks ass
There is plenty of real life percent for Music being used to help Military Moral. Just look at the Iconic spirit of 76 statue.
I wonder what got the original version of this video got taken down from TH-cam
nesman1985 ? Who honestly knows with the way youtube is these days
It was probably harmony gold being harmony gold
So a total dick
On the plus side they seam to finally be getting their comeuppance as their lawsuits a giant battletech have mostly been dismissed
actually if the Rebels imprisoned Han Solo for being a smuggle would be kinda awesome
Everyone raise a hand if you haven't seen this one before✋
✋
"Moustache sounds like Eyore..." AND NOW I CAN'T UNHEAR IT!!!
The UN generals and Emperor Ingoose were total narcissists who got their asses kicked by the victims
I actually have the vf-1s from do you remember love
I think they use the music to freak out the zentradi because they live completely different
you almost got it, the Zentradi were bred for War, thus have had LOST there Culture, the Macross brought back their culture to them.
Yeah, I still get a major case of the rages whenever I hear Celine Dion; it's all my school mates would listen to for a while and it made me regret having ears sometimes. Totes understandable that they would Hulk out.
8:55 The name Ishtar is the reference from a classic Namco Arcade game, The Return of Ishtar.
no, its the retelling of the story of Gilgamesh and Ishtar.
9:33 Actually, I thought I heard a rough-cover riff to Nitro's 'Freight Train' there, Sage. XD
Oh God this was hilarious! Thanks Sage I needed a good laugh~
Please review SD Gundam Force for a new toonami month.
The Marduk should have conscripted humans
hey sage i'm seeing KMFDM, Combichrist, and Lords of Acid this week! hope you can catch that show

One of My uncles loved this anime
Hibiki is the audience proxy. He's there to ask the stupid questions that prompt expository dialogue.

Dude, not cool comparing that horrible mustache dude’s voice actor to Peter Cullen. Show Eeyore/Optimus Prime’s voice actor bit more respect.
Also the voice of the predator.
That’s what the news needs more transforming jet robots

I wonder if he'd be willing to review Orguss?
Will you ever review Macross Plus?
Charlene Alyssa Ingram he has
TheGeordieAnimeGuy He did?
Charlene Alyssa Ingram yea it's on his website. Don't know if he'll upload it here though.
He already has.
Owen Krauss Oh. I'll wait, then. 🙂
Cool video. Tonight at midnight find out what Homeless Teddy is.

When are you going to review Big Wars?!

Tell that yo Kpop Stans.
too small to grow?
*looks at macross frontier*
It fun they work for channel 5 .I joke about the one day the armor the news casters .
What'is the live musical présentés on nearly 2 minutes.Seems to be fun
The jpop was to distract and destruct the aliens
Good A.L.F. reference. :)
11:25 It's SUPER easy, barely an inconvenience!
remember watching macross and thinking that was a poor stapled together shit bag, but the ending was nice. half of it didnt make sense
So what is edited in these?
I haven't seen the original yet, but this edited version is 2 minutes and 30 seconds shorter.
I think it might just be the intro to avoid youtubes algorithms.
DramaKingMan0
When in doubt, its probably a song.
A song or a clip that'd trigger TH-cam's ContentID bots and get the video taken down again.
Macross 7 is the sequel
"Satelite..."
18:40 should have played Klingon Opera.
Please review steamboy!
James McIntyre yes
I really enjoy the Macross series, even the silliness of 7 (thought I was disappointed in Delta), but I got halfway through the first episode of Macross II and noped out. I didn't like it at all. I think it was Hibiki that really killed it for me, I could not stand that little twerp.
Then you missed the ENTIRE development of his character.
The reason why Macross 2 isn't that good is because its not Macross 7, and doesn't have Nekki Basara
11:00 Engrish Misspelling!
This was the first anime I ever owned. What amazed me was how it predicted 9/1, people were complacent before it happened, and we have two towers falling over.
HEY dont bad mouth starship troopers
Yeah, that third one fully embraced the farce.
10:50 Yes Bennett, trans people exist.
Why the fuck don't you just put a link to the original, unedited version on your site in the description?
In the grand franchise tradition the MC isn't the best pilot, in this case a total amateur.
mechas are everywhere
14:31^^yes u do
Mmm it’s 👌🏻 abit
FIRST!
Macross 2 was a amazing video and the anime dub was fantastic. So i cant watch this review.
6:57 So basically a doomer?
