"We didn't know what a pedophile was in the 70"s and neither did the FBI man." Then later the mother say the FBI and other people told her he was not a nice man and they should protect their daughter from his clutches. Even if you didn't know what a pedophile was how could you stay friends with a man who took your child without asking?

H B They may not have known what a paedophile was but they knew 100% that his actions were weird, uncomfortable and in plain sight WRONG. The were both naive (small town thinking) and in deep denial. Remember, each parent in their own way was sexually attracted to the perpetrator and so they were emotionally invested in maintaining a relationship with him and being easily manipulated by his BS by feigning attraction to each of the parents.

In the Netflix documentary both parents say they had a sexual experience at one point with that man so I think at the time, neither spouse new about the other one hooking up with the man, and they didn't want it all to come out by calling the police on him. That's just my thoughts I got while watching the documentary though. It is super disgusting what he did.

Disabling the comments prevents meaningful discussion and is an embarrassment to everything Dr. Phil stands for. Sure, there will always be trolls, but they will be drowned out by those who want to talk about particular issues presented in the video seriously: and by those who can relate on a personal basis to these issues (videos such as rape, molestation, abuse, drug abuse, homelessness, etc.). Disabling comments is silencing the voice of victims. Some videos may deserve disabled comments, if the victim is just going to be made fun of, (although I believe none do, as I support the first amendment). Please consider keeping comments disabled on *most* videos in the future in order to allow those with similar issues discuss them and not feel alone.
    Thank You.

Dr. Phil- For years, I was the adult that kids came to in our apt. complex because I would listen, I would help & at times, I would feed & clothe them when their parents couldn't or wouldn't. I did that because, I was one of the lucky kids who grew up with great parents. You know what I found confusing? Parents who WOULDN'T meet with me or even talk with me. They were quite happy that I was around when their kids weren't supervised, but, they seemed to not care who was around their own kids. I would even send notes back with the kids with all my info &...nothing. What is wrong with today's parents?

Maybe that Berchtold was a master manipulator but how on earth can parents be so thick to let an adult best family friend spend plenty of nights in the same bed with their teenage daughter? Lone the fact that they realized he was having an unhealthy fixation on that girl should have se their alarm bells on. The top of the iceberg was that the mother had a love and the father a sexual affair with him and out of fear that he's sell them drop all charges. That is not exactly what I call loving and caring parents.

    • @lucyhough2946
      @lucyhough2946 5 ปีที่แล้ว

So Rousse if you watch the documentary after the 1st abduction the mother has an affair with him. I realize it was the seventies but what person would do that? It’s crazy.
At the beginning of the documentary they talk about him “dividing and conquering” the parents which he did by having sexual relationships with both of them. By dividing and conquering them it opened the door for him to have a relationship with Jan. He groomed not only the girl but also the parents. He really was a monster.

Her parents abused her also. This isn’t something a parent would do.

This some crazy space alien stuff! This can't be the behavior of human parents. There is something eerily unsettling about the family...the parents.

I felt physically sick watching the Netflix documentary on seeing the behaviour of the parents! They were so gullible and ignorantly stupid beyond belief,to allow their beloved child to go on trips with ANYONE other than family. Even sometimes you cannot trust family members, and to allow him to “lay down” next to her to help him through his “therapy”!! Sorry, but I think the parents should have been arrested for child neglect.

Me, my wife and my friends just saw the documentary: Abducted in Plain Sight .
    We can't stop laughing.
Gay father, mother Hore and daughter E.T.
    Has your DNA a cross with a donkey,a e.t. and a clown?
He is not a monster, monster was the parents who, by not taking any action, made several girls go through the same situation without doing anything about it.
    What a debilitating family.
They are raising money for the father who died.
What a bunch of shameless people.
He chose the lover over the daughter.
Ela nunca foi abduzida, ela foi dada pelos pais.
