I have been blessed to have owned 23 Porsches over the last 40+ years. 1 or more of most every model. Each one had their own wonderful characteristics as well as pitfalls. The early air cooled ones were pure simplicity and fun to drive and way ahead of other sports cars @ the time. The 550 Spyder had incredible power to weight ratio and you were always riding on the edge of the envelope between speed, handling and losing traction/changing direction, especially with the tire technology in those days. Even the 914 when it came out had 4 wheel discs, a targa top, 5 speed trans and fuel injection which few other sports cars had at the time. The 928's were larger, more comfortable and loaded with creature comforts but would cruise the autobahn at supercar speeds all day long. I presently am driving a Boxster which evokes memories of both the 550 and 914. The only thing I can say is that I wish I still had each and every one.
@@xman777b the 968 is a nice car in that it was the end of the era for those front engine/rear transaxle/liquid cooled cars for people who could not afford the price of a 928. It had all the refinements that we're missing in the earlier versions of the 924, 944, and 924S. Porsche always improves each model in some way every year to help promote trade-ins from current owners so that they can get the newer and more improved version. They were nice cars with the only problem with the 968 being that they made less of them and fewer model specific parts are available new and used as well as aftermarket retailers. The convertible is nice and in my humble opinion should have been offered on all of the other models including the 928. If you are interested in a Porsche or any make or model of vehicle find a model specific forum and spend some time there. They will usually have great posts about what to look for when buying the Forum specific vehicle and any common problems.
@robertrickel9205 thank you for taking the time to reply. I actually just purchased an 05 Cayenne S. It's a 1 owner, Florida vehicle, 74K, well maintained, no accidents. I'm awaiting delivery, and have an extensive PPI inspection scheduled, as these models are unfortunately notorious for bore-scoring. In summary, it's been a dream of mine to own a Porsche since driving a brand-new 924S in 1988 via the Porsche dealership on Scottsdale Rd, when I was in high school. The Cayenne? I was enamored with the vehicle upon its unveiling in 2002, and prefer SUVs, where I live. I would prefer a Turbo model, but only because they're allegedly less likely to suffer from bore-scoring. The Porsche SUV s have become Porsche's best sellers. They are a tweaked and rebadged Audi. I have numerous friends who own Cayennes and they have been pretty robust and dependable.As with any German car do the maintenance and run synthetic fluids. Very wise of you to get a PPI hopefully by a reputable Porsche/Audi mechanic. Looks like you have already done your homework on the forums to know about the scoring issues. My one friend has about 170k on his regularly aspirated V6 Cayenne. He sells real estate and his is a daily driver. He bought it new and his only problem was they changed the transaxle out at just under 90k but they did it under warranty . Since there are so many of them and they share so many parts between the two brands there is also a plethora of new and used parts around. PORSCHE, Proves Only Rich Suckers Can Have Everything. I wish I was a rich sucker. I discovered a badly clapped out split window Porsche in Tucson Arizona. What little there was left of it included the "banjo" steering wheel. It had been badly wrecked and had bondo and inch thick in from of the windshield. No engine or transmission, more or less an empty hull. I happened to meet the president of the local Porsche club and mentioned it to him. It disappeared in no time at all. I assume he snapped it up and hopefully restored it.
50197 You don't need to be a rich sucker to buy and enjoy a beautifully engineered Porsche. I got a very low mileage Boxster in beautiful condition for the price of a used Corolla. They are the best car secret in the world. I love it dearly and don't want anything fancier. I went on a drive yesterday and it changed my gloomy mood for the rest of the day. You just can't keep from smiling when driving a Porsche. Even a cheap one.

You can get an older 986 or 996 for peanuts. Fine cars. I love my Boxster. If you need a newer, more expensive model you are just trying to impress people, not enjoy a great car.

And the IMS was always exaggerated while trying to denigrate the 986/996 because they weren't air-cooled Porsches like the Porsche Gods intended. But they saved Porsche.
