My childhood family doctor had a 356B and I can remember him coming round for house calls and no matter how sick I was I'd always want to go look at the car. I think that 356B helped me recover more than the drugs did!
It honestly could have hahaha.
yeah!
Just like Doc Hollywood! (Michael J. Fox movie in the 90's)
Rod is a great guest. Really knowledgable dude and full of history and facts. Great episode!
MetalJesusRocks OMG MetalJesus is a car guy!! :O
.
.
MetalJesusRocks Seriously! I agree, I was especially drooling over that *Kessler 3.2L 4 Cylinder Engine* that they fabricated...talk about an EPIC addition to the package, it's like *they built the 356 that "never was" (but should've been lol)*.
cybertree Growing-up a lot of the neighbors had new/fairly new Corvettes/Porsche s (beyond the family cruisers to likes of Saab,Peugeot,Audi,Benz,Jags, boatloads of 3 Series etc).............Porsche/Corvette neighbors were just very peculiar and tended to be very shallow.
This is one of the most beautiful cars ever. And not because its a 356, but because its done very nicely. Exceptional craftsmanship.
Jay, I have to tell you...It is pretty obvious in the first two mins that Roy here wanted to talk, and you encouraging him to tell the actual story of this long running businesses makes this vid one of THE best ones your channel has ever done. Your interview skills come to the forefront again. What a great memorable 25 mins. Thanks for this!
The Black 356 is just perfect, so beautiful!
Zymh actually those cheese greaters on the lights are disgusting.
@@followthegrow108 Yeah not a fan of those but I'm a sicker for black couples. That's why I bought my 97 Cobra in black. Just looks amazing when spotless, but the problem with black is that they are so tedious to keep clean
Must be amazing to be part of his family. 4 generations spending time around and making a living of these beautiful functional pieces of mechanical art. Man...his son must be living the dream.
Back in 'the day', there was an award called 'index of performance'. It took into account the performance of the car based on how it performed considering engine size/weight. Porsche always won the award. Back then, as with this incredible Emory build, I have the highest admiration for the Porsche 356. Hat's off to Emory for his family's dedication, vision and commitment to craftsmanship exemplified with this build. I totally agree with what Jay says in this video. This is a car which brings joy to the driving experience.
You can literally hear the passion in this guys voice when describing the different parts on his cars.
This is one of the best guests you've had.
I've seen a lot of cars that Jay has had on his show, but this is one of the ones I would really love to drive.
I’ve simply loved Porsches since I was a child and the feeling has never gone away! Thank you God!🙏🏽
The resto-mod is probably my favorite means of improving a car. And the work that Emory crew is doing on their Outlaws is amazing. Power, handling, suspension, they've done it right. I'm a fan! #KeepAustinGeared
P
MR. Leno,i am 66, and I’ve had dreams of 1967 Porsche all my live. My mother never missed your show.
I’ve been saying pray hope and don’t worry. I am still hoping. You are the luckiest man i know.
Rod was really interesting to listen to, even Jay was quiet for a bit! Lovely cars.
Yeah. Jay usually interrupts a lot. He was pretty quiet.
chipchip Jay was quiet I think because he was learning. A rare thing for most people.
Sam Tan so true
I, too, noticed that Jay didn't hog the conversation. I had a great time in my 88-HP 1960 Roadster. I can't imagine the fun I could have had with a four cyl. 911 engine and true IRS.
chipchip My favorite episode in the series. Was cool to listen to the guy talk about these cars and the history of both Porsche and his family. Very knoweledgable with no pretense or arrogance. Also, BEAUTIFUL cars!!!
So good to have an articulate guest. Kudos to you Jay for allowing the guest to have the "stage".
Rod is a really awesome, I love when guests as knowledgeable as him come on the show!
When I was a young boy in 1956 I worked at the Circle in Miami Springs. My job at the time was folding newspapers for my paper route. I delivered them in my 1952 Oldsmobile. There was a Porsche Dealership on the Circle. I would go over and look at the various cars and wish I could someday buy one. The cars they had were just so beautiful. I've carried their image with me all my through my life. I attended college in the sixties and I had the opportunity to drive a Porsche on the Ocean Highway. That was a wonderful experience.
I never did look twice at a Porsche up untill about 3 or 4 years ago. Then a friend told me to take his 2012 Boxster for a day's 'test drive'. Now I see what the name of Porsche means to the owners. I won't say I'm looking for one to buy,but,...I am educated somewhat, it what the marque implies.
Porsche's ARE different and not just a jazzed up Volkswagen, as my previous thoughts had taken me down that wrong road.
Drive a Porsche when you get the chance, and you'll see what I did.
Thanks for this Jay.
Reg Sparkes I own a 2001 boxter S and you’re right ..... Porsche’s are different n special
Welcome to the state of Enlightenment!
For the longest time 356s were the only Porsche outside 911s that I ever gave any thought to. Another home run of a vid, bravo!
Sure it's nice to see museum pieces but like Rod said, "while they're out there are picking lint out of the air cleaner my Dad and I we're ripping our cars through the hills" and with the cars they build that's the way it should be.....Awesome machines Rod.
OMFG.... that black Emory 356 has got to be the most beautiful car I've ever set eyes on.... down right awesome. It's a rare thing for a pureist car guy like myself to condone messing with the original lines of any vehicle especially a Porsche, but my god that car is spot on! I tip my hat to people who made that car happen.
Well done, Rod! Legitimate masterpieces. It's great to see his enthusiasm for what he does and the Legacy of his family. Thanks for sharing this video, Jay!
Best show ever...Rod is an artist and it was great listening to the Passion he has for his work...Great!
Can you imagine being born into such a great family of gearheads? Essentially this guy has never "worked" a day in his life because he loves what he does so much.
The Moto Channel
EXACTLY
The reason that these skills and passion have gone from generation to generation is that they do what is a dream job!
The Moto Channel ..so true !!!
Gkn
The Moto Channel I was thinking the exact same thing watching the episode! Good show!
The Moto Channel like everyone that likes his own job...
I literally got goose bumps right after he mentioned the 5 speed gear box , then accelerated..you could see the power/weight ratio, on top of that sound and aesthetic. So well done!
Thanks for sharing a great story, and car. Great episode. Loved seeing the twinkle in Rod's eye as he spoke of his beloved cars. Obviously loves what he does.
Had i not known about Emory's work i would of had never guessed at first glance that the Special is so modified. Goes to show that if you want to, you can modify something and not make a mess of it.
Drop dead gorgeous cars, both of them, a lot of attention to detail and much love in the build.
Really beautiful 356s! Classic of the classics!
My wife looked up Jay's net worth. Estimated at 350M. Hardest working guy in show business because even while doing the Tonight Show he still did side gigs. A rich guy without the pompous ego.
Word! One of the few celebrities I actually wanna meet and have a conversation with/buy lunch for and chat.
@@DM-wp9vq Yep. I really admire the devotion to his wife and his "regular guy" approach. Talking cars with Jay would be like talking cars with a buddy. He seems like the real deal without the snobbery or pretense.
“ This is the size a sports car should be” exactly!
I'm not typically a Porshe guy but watching this video makes me want a Emory 356. The Silver car is Beautiful!! great episode!!
Great episode! One of the best I've seen! I love to hear a man talk about something he obviously has a passion for it inspires me!!! Thanks Jay for bringing these guys on.
What I like about Jay is, he is a very friendly person, he’s got a reason for dressing up always the same. Very clever. And he knows the old cars are really reliable. Not as the things they over complicate today
I work on these cars every day and that black car is one of the best looking Porsche’s ever.
That guy was a great interview, he knows his stuff like the back of his hand. He also puts together a very unique, interesting and fine quality product. He did it right.
Great episode and truly amazing cars. The attention to detail is impressive.
.
I love Rod Emory's line, talking about events where they were "outlawed", when he says ". . . while these guys were picking lint out of their air cleaners, we were racing through the hills . . . ". It shows the independent spirit of his crew, willing to put up with the crap because they were doing what they thought was creative and good for them.
Beautiful cars! Makes me sad that I'm poor. lol
WikdSeafood Cat food can be nice with tobasco.
+WikdSeafood deal some drugz, yo
WikdSeafood - Dude you are not alone. I am sure there are a bunch of us that would love to own a car from the Emory's Garage.
You're better off being poor with taste than rich without. Be patient and you'll come across a cool car you can afford.
+WikdSeafood So many cool cars out there that aren't a lot of money. Like Jay said, these were $4500 not that long ago. Not $4500 with all the resto and upgrades :) but lots of cool things out there that aren't a lot of money.
I don't think I've ever seen Jay drive with such verve as he did on the winding roads with this 356. Pure enjoyment.
its happened before when Jay just loves a car but not often....he loved this car
356s never get old
.....not literally.
I'd have to say the way the black one is done is probably the best looking 356 on the planet
I absolutely loved this episode J thank you and thank you Emory.
Have always loved the 356 Porsche. I used to collect the various 356 aftermarket catalogs in the early 60's and dreamt of owning one and using the parts. I've come across a few in my time, but never purchased one. All I could afford were Beetles. Now, the 356s are too expensive and I wouldn't want to drive a $300k Outlaw car on the street. Not even an original 356. I would die if the car were dinged. They are a blast to drive, as well. The 911s were strong in their day when pushed. The 356 cars were just fun and were easier to drive "fast" (it's all relative). Drive fast in anything with the engine in the rear and swing axles, and you can drive just about any car.
Jay, you do a remarkable job on this channel. The featured cars are always a treat to see. Many thanks!! Have anything more on Benzes?
Christian Slater builds some amazing 356's
Ian Derzsi
the actor?
Jeff K
never mind, I just got it.
yes..he walked away from hollywood to do 356's and drugs.
Slater! Just Slater.
At long last, we get to see the meeting between Rod Emory and Jay Leno. I hope we see many more Emory outlaws and specials - that are clearly the most evocative classic Porsches. Rod Emory combines the artistry of Dean Jeffries with the engineering acumen of Ferdinand Porsche. Rod ought to be recognized as a national treasure just like artisans in Japan who receive formal recognition for the excellence of their work. And, it is refreshing to learn that the Emorys are back in Burbank. This was one of the most important and enjoyable episodes in Jay's Garage. Let's see Rod again with another of his amazing creations - very soon.
In my dream garage I'd have an Emory 356, Singer 911 and a couple of Eagle E-Types amongst others. All beautiful, exquisite but very expensive works of art that you can drive too.
Also you can see that this is a later JLG video even without looking at the date stamp, by the watch Jay's wearing (I'm a horology fan too) In most of the earlier videos its one of the Seiko Sportura Kinetic Chronograph watches, whilst in these more recent ones its an Watch.
Right-on with the last words in the episode, passing on the skills to build cars from father to son. Emory and sons: here's to your success!
That car is a masterpiece
Thank you again for the best motoring program anywhere.
Nice to see the respect between two very knowledgeable people.
MrAtheHun not very knowlegeable lol but top gear
Don't ask me why but I really enjoyed this video. Rod Emory was a great guest and his world of information just kept you asking for more. The story of his family was also great to hear about and the fact that the tradition will live on.
On the 1958 Special I would just love to be able to drive that car. Jay hit the nail on the head when he talked about the mystic of these cars. Sure there are the 200 mph plus exotics but they have no personality like the Porsches and others in that category. It is the karma that Jay was talking about when shifting through the gears and watching the tach climb. Its like Yoga for gear heads.
I saw both of these at the UA Theater a couple of Saturdays ago!! This video does not do them justice!! They are jaw dropping!!
I would literally take this car over any other car new or old. This is as classy as it gets while still maintaining sporty and manliness. This would be in Bruce Wayne's garage for sure.
Agreed
Keep in mind that if you hit anything your dead. Cool car nonetheless.
@@FYMASMD If you hit anything, you're a doofus driver and deserve it!
Paul Zink yes great assessment . Even race car drivers crash . You must be that kid that screamed the loudest and managed to make it into adulthood
Mr. Leno,
Please do a show on the Jag Mark II....I am a huge fan of your series....thank you for continuing to make else movies. You rule!!
Beautiful cars! if only i could have one.
Steven Pruit
I like the fact, Jay, that you emphasized how much fun this car is to drive. To have real fun in driving a sports car is what it is all about. The sun roof certainly gives it an air feeling, even from here on my computer watching your u-tube recreation. This is a wonderful car.
Those 356's look so gorgeous!
What we members of the 356 Register used to call the "last of the 'real' Porsches" (to the great annoyance of the 911 owners…)
OMG did I love this episode. I had a '58 Speedster for over 25 years and due to a weak moment, decided to sell it. I still have 356 blood in my veins and thoroughly enjoyed every second of this video. I always wondered what a 356 would be if it was brought up to modern standards. Now I know.
I kinda think the 356 looks better as a coupe than a convertible like the speedsters. The lines look a lot sleeker.
I think to this day, this is the best episode of Jay Leno's Garage.
Great guest, great cars!
Another one to put on my favourite cars list, amazing.
Rod Emory is an artist in every sense of the word, absolute stunning cars
Young man represents his family well.
I love the sound of that 911 4 cylinder. The 356 has always been my Porsche of choice, even before they started getting popular in the collector circles, there is just something sexy about the lines and an attainable feel to them. Such a shame I missed out on the affordable era :(
I'd take that silver 356 outlaw. Also I'd love to own the 550 Spyder. Even if it's a replica. It'd still be beautiful for the eye to behold. Porsche is definitely my favorite German brand of car. Looking forward to owning one in the future!
Will not forget this ride, exquisitely done
I love those cars.
Great Porsches, build quality and subtle details are just pure!
Guy: "You know 185-200 horsepower."
Two seconds later
Jay: "What kind of horsepower you making with this?"
He said it three four or more times before then, it must have been edited.
Jay pretends to listen at times where really he is just focused on drinking in the cars details.
To me the hp he stated out of the 2.5ltr custom built OHC motor seems very low for a Porsche, Jay may have been seeing if he was sandbaging him ?
Why is everything about horsepower jl commented on how the torque felt...watch the video again.
@@s52obd1M Well, because hp and torque are the only things that when spoken or read indicate what kind of power an engine is making. So every engine has it. A horse power and torque rating. For peak power and usable or lower rpm strength or power. Pulling power in the mid range.
I love that Jay can drive....just makes watching his channel so much nicer...
I wish he could dress too, would make his channel better.
Not a terrible way to spend $300k. I love it!
You could get a chessel Porsche and it may lack some of the heart but cost you 5 times less.
Trevor Wray
Yeah, if I had Jay Leno money I guess I would have one. For those of us with tighter financials though I would rather get a Cayman GTS and drive the heck out of it.
Jeff K Yeah sure.... the Cayman is an overpriced PIECE of Sh%T. Even at $100,00+..............nicely optioned out. Floor mats cost extra.....Standard on a seasonal priced $20,000 Camry LE/Accord LX. If Porsche was so successful at building vehicles Profitably; the VW Group would not have been able to take control from the Porsche Family most recently How far out of touch is Porsche with a consumer market? A ATE brake caliper for a 944.also used on the Peugeot 504,505,604,. and other mainstream vehicles cost as little as $20.00 to rebuild and new/re-manufactured units can be had for under $50.00 bucks............Porsche charges $2,000+ for the same caliper.
D McNamara But...floor mats add weight.
D McNamara
Porsche is the world's most profitable (per car) mass-production automobile company, for one, and for two, are you serious? Floor mats being standard on an Accord is completely irrelevant to the Cayman GTS. Seriously, nobody cares what comes on the Accord when they're buying their Cayman.
Emory's story of showing up to Porsche events in the late 80s and early 90s and being put out in the cold is especially hilarious to me.
From around 1988 to 1990, I was the owner of a 356B, recently moved down from SF to LA. I'd been a member of the PCA/Golden Gate Region, and those guys were very hardcore about about driving (almost criminally so), but when I moved south and joined the LA Region of the PCA and got on the Board of Directors, I found the members to be very "different"; as in, mainly interested in "shine and show", but not so much about driving events.
I vividly remember our Region's President, Kurt, bemoaning the fact that he'd lost out on getting an award at the most recent PCA Porsche Parade because the judges found he'd polished some suspension bolt that had been originally dull finish from the factory!
Incredible cars... love em
Rod was terrific.
And, once again, you were wonderful, Jay.
Thanks for this.
This has style, is tastefully done and is classy. Magnus Walkers cars haven't got that.
....AGREED.........
What a beautiful porsche. Unfortunately you don't see a lot of the older ones like this where I live. I almost like them more than the newer ones. Jay you have the best job in the world!! Keep up the good work. I am glad you are still doing something in front of a camera. Thanks
a level above magnus walker from what i have researched and observed.
but a far lower level from a Singer
walker is just a designer and promoter, i think.
Berna La - says the guy that's never driven a Singer
Dear god, those cars are beautiful!!!...those lines..the curves!!..the paint!...
The black one, oh.....my......GOD
Rod is a great guy. Bless him and his beautiful family.
The special looks dark green in the sunlight.
This video was exquisite to watch. Both cars were absolutely gorgeous.
in love!!!
Me to
Steve Van Der Vorst Same here brother, I respect *restorations and all that "matching numbers" stuff*, but only because I know there will be one left in a MUSEUM one day to look at.
BUT, I've personally NEVER been happy with a stock vehicle, in the end sometimes the manufacturer gets WAY too much credit for giving you what you paid for. I want to see something different, personalized, ENHANCED (tastefully). These aren't your typical restorations with their noses in the air, these porsches are enhanced to do what they were BORN TO DO!
Amazing body work and details, really looks nothing like "just custom work". The cherry on top is absolutely Dean Polopolus 2.5L Polo motor. It turns the beauty into a real beast.
if youre gonna ride with a passenger in a 356, you better be dating 'em
Why, no one is sliding of the seat. No need for buckets
More room in a 356 than any of the vintage British sports cars except Jag's.
Why is everyone bragging about their daddy's cars...really get your own whip and build one on your own.
And Lapp your valves after every machine shop in America hangs up on you. Use clokus cloth on those bearings too.
You should see the Runge Cars
The taste these cars were built with is just astonishing. I can't help to think of those "F&F style" cars with all their neons and spinner wheels and gigantic spoilers. What a contrast!
Schmittpal Zippy Aw, that's mean... Subarus, Mitsubishis... those are *factory* gigantic spoilers.
TassieLorenzo And Porsche had the whale tail. Not all spoilers are bad spoilers. :-)
Is it just me or does the black one look like it has a lil green tint in the paint?
Your screen and/or eyes must be a bit off. Thats a pure black paint.
eeemanyo It does look like it at some points.
In the rolling shits - the car definitely has a green pearl/metallic in it - that or the camera is playing tricks.
eeemanyo It's because of the reflections of the posters on the car.
eeemanyo I see the green, especially in the outdoor shots.
Jay. You are my hero. Please make an episode on the misunderstood, forgotten and the persistlent underdog (VW) Porsche 914 (-4 or /6).
I love to see a restomod done right (which isn't often!)
Those are the finest cars I have ever seen. Seriously. They don’t get any nicer.
cut the chat, more driving! This guy knew his onions but he can talk the hind leg off a donkey.
alfamonk 😂
by far my favorite episode and car builder.

That's an amazing build right there. I really like the description of that "911" 4-cylinder engine. What a piece of engineering that is!
Wow they are really snuggled up together in the car lol.
2 minutes in my favourite Lenos Garage episode. I have been waiting with baited breath for this. I love 356 and respect the work of the Emory shop love them aircooled porka's.
10:48 Jay is wearing an Apple Watch.
JAMANB yup the $10k version
JAMANB Ace Campano ITS ALMOST AS IF HE'S RICH OR SOMETHING
JAMANB god it looks tight on his wrist.
JAMANB Oh yeah, well done, like that's relevent.
***** I know right! Wonder if he has like more than one car ?
This Black Porsche is one of my favourites on Jays show, and Rod really knows his stuff ! :)
Amazing car!
I think if I was ever about to die, my last wish would be to spend a day with Jay Leno and just look around his shop... I mean, seriously, the stuff that's in there is just mind blowingly awesome. I may be a Porsche guy through and through, but I would still run up to each and every car like a little kid and want to know every last detail about them.
His looks and voice make me think Christian Slater has a brother.
That first one. WoW . Thank you Mr.Leno, loved it.
