    I absolutely love these new Airfix kits, the detail, particularly the office, is so good. I'm nearly 70 and have built kits my whole life since being a mall child and I remember the old Airfix, Frog etc kits that lacked any detail in the cockpit at all apart from a "seat" and a vaguely humanoid shaped blob to represent the pilot.

    When I was a kiddie, my Dad bought my first model and paints. The paints were yellow, red, blue, white and black so I could mix them and get all the colours I needed. I eventually saved up for silver.

      Yes, exactly. Fast forward to 2021 and modellers have forgotten this important skill. You only need a small amount of colours and photos and a colour wheel to make any colour. I laugh at modellers with dozens of jars of all the different colours, no skill!

    After watching this video I ordered one of these kits, I have lots of kits sitting around but just can't bring myself to build any, I suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder and at 59 I'm not getting any younger, so the plan is to build the kit out of the box while reviewing your video, thanks in advance for helping me get out of a 6 year slump.

      Hi Gregg, I’ve just turned 60 and have had my issues in the past and I find making kits very helpful. Just don’t sweat it trying to make what other people think is ‘right’, do it to make whatever makes you happy. Best of luck with it, mate!

    I build 1/72 scale airplanes from the WW2 era just like this! Your other kit builds are great too, but i think modern airplanes all look like wedges with their triangular wings. I do enjoy watching your videos for the useful content.

    Saw these in Aldi. Great starter kits, although some molding caused a bit of fiddling to attach superstructure & canopy. The paints aren't too bad, but enough to get buy with some leftover. One brush, but just wash off in a yogurt pot and dry on loo roll sheet. glue, use sparingly. Decided to resume one my old hobbies. Life, work, family, no time. now i have a few hours in the evening. Having fun making FW into RAF, Spitfire into Luftwaffe etc. As for my old extensive model collection. think mum and dad had a loft clear out and binned the lot in 87. Those were propper-built kits, each build over a few weeks. These Airfix starters I can knock up in 5 hrs. the paint & glue drys super quick.

    Pretty sure the original Airfix FW 190 was the first kit I built as a kid. Have to say I'd find it a challenge to use only the glue and paints supplied to build the kit so well done on that score. I'd certainly consider getting one of these now I've seen your video.

      Something I’ve added to the next video (out tomorrow night I hope) is using something like a bent paper clip to distribute glue instead of the tube itself.

    There really seems to be a mixup with the colours (or maybe Airfix just economised to get away with including only four pots.)
    The bluish grey looks like RLM 76 that would go to the undersides. The uppers were painted in two darker greys, one greenish (RLM 74), one slightly purplish (RLM 75).

    I'm actually pleasantly surprised what can achieved with just using the contents of these starter sets. I've got memories of that acrilic paint being just awful to use. But you made a reasonable job of it. 👍👍

      @@garys_stuff absolutely. I made loads as a kid, bit of a Matchbox fan. Got into it again about 10 years ago for a couple of years and ended up with a loft full of kits! Then stopped as soon as I started, but these little starter kits are giving me that itch again! 😄👍

    Im another kit builder from my teens. retired with a stash including this one as part of the Aldi specials. Ive not picked up the courage to restart yet but, your videos certainly inspire. I would want to try a bit of filling, panel scribing and simple washes to pick out detail too. Id want to buy swastikas too and use a bit of varnish too. but unlike you Im still dithering. But enjoying your videos immensely. 😉 Keep up the great work.

    now that is a good video , great ideas and tips to paint and add decals while on the sprue, and no airbrush , yeeahhhh !!! 👍👍👍👌👌👌, I used to build when I was young , I bought 15 model kits and haven't built one because all I see is airbrush this, airbrush that , it's really put me off and so they sit there in the loft in a huge box 😒😢

    @zetectic7968 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi - bought this before lockdown and managed to mislay the paintbrush as the kit came on a card not a box. Now my tremor has got worse and I wonder if I'll be able to make this, so it is good to see what it looks like 😀
    I build quite a few kit as a kid but didn't paint them because the paint was extra to what my pocket money could afford & I didn't really have the space and patience to be methodical then.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just take your time and don't worry. Use dabs of glue and you can spend time getting the pieces in the right place at your own pace. If you tremor is an issue with the camouflage, you might like to do it as if you were spray painting - so do the bottom colour, then mask off to do the top, then mask off again to do the darker top colours. You'll get straight lines without the worry. But at the end of the day, my friend, if you enjoy making it and painting it, then that is all that really matters. Very good luck with the kit!

    Not really starter friendly IMO. Just finished this myself and fit was really poor in places. It could be user error but the 2 additional pieces of cowling to fit were terrible plus a big gap between the fuselage and wing. I managed to fill in with putty OK but that's not a starter skill! They should definitely revist this if it's a true starter kit as the new Spitfire stater kits are outstanding. Both the Mk1a and Vc.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you Huw. I think the starter element is lost when you make a kit that can be endlessly modified with different bits for different boxings! Make one, major, mark and make it easy!

    • @davidrobinson4118
      @davidrobinson4118 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen a comment from another modeler who bagged them recently at this price or thereabouts. This must have been an error at the branch because the price of these kits is £6.99. I've just bagged the Spit, FW190, Hurricane, Bf109 and the Provost. Unfortunately my branch was on the ball so no serendipitous mega bargain for me! Still a good buy though as they are nice little kits. Happy modelling my friend.

  • @simongee8928
    @simongee8928 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I bought this one from Aldi a while back and was very disappointed with the kit compared with the original 1960's tooling. Too many parts for the engine scowling which didn't really fit properly and the outboard 20mm. cannon were already moulded into the wings and were so flimsy, it was very difficult to assemble the rest of the kit and avoid breaking these off.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the engine cowling thing, and the extra bits in the wings, is so that one basic kit can be turned into many versions with little parts change. It does make it a bit of a jack of all trades kit. If they retool it as a starter they will probably lose a lot if that - at least, if they are smart!

  • @philipway7562
    @philipway7562 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love your videos, really helped me get into modelling. Can I ask how you paint things first and then glue them, I just seem to end up in a gluey mess and nothing sticks?!

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well most of the time it seems to work... for bits of cockpit interior, for example, it is OK. But for larger bonding surfaces, like the two halves of a fuselage, I'll give the joins a quick go over with medium grit paper - about 400 grit - so it just takes the paint off. Also I use just enough paint to cover the parts - not too thick and not too much. Bits you paint on the sprue (like control columns) you can make sure you miss out the bit at the end that glues into the cockpit. likewise I rarely paint the bottom of seats as I'll never see them again anyway!

    I believe that number 8 was a unknown Oberfeldwebel.
