In this video I'm building the 1/72nd scale kit of the Messerschmitt Bf-109 fighter from Airfix. This is a kit I purchased during the Aldi 2021 winter sale for £4.99.

I enjoy Airfix kits for their overall value. If I were to express a nitpick, it would be the parts’ relatively heavy wall thickness. Not sure if this is due to the type of plastic they use or other production choices, but even the Airfix designers have hinted on their own TH-cam channel that parts thickness presents a challenge to proper scale and location of detail in confined spaces like the cockpit, example having to shorten the legs of the included pilot to make him fit. The final presentation is still great though.

I haven't built a model in over 6 months due to a house move, I've just started and made a handful of mistakes already. The way you have built yours make so much more sense than the instructions. I wish I had watched this first. I was absolutely racking my brains about the pedals totally overlooking the alternative having the pilot thinking why have two identical pictures. Hopefully it will be like the spitfire and you won't see much of the cockpit as ripped the decals leaving them too long. Luckily I've got two from Aldi 4.99 special.
Believe me, I make plenty of mistakes I then have to rescue! If you don't make mistakes you never learn. As long as you are happy with the result, that's all that matters. Also, remember that Airfix do occasionally make mistakes (did I really say that? How very dare I?) and don't make things entirely clear. For example, with rudder pedals they could probably say either use the pilot or fit the rudder bar, as with a pilot in the seat your chance of seeing the rudder is pretty much zero, especially if you have a closed cockpit canopy!

Hi Gary.
There are no mashine guns in the wings of the Bf 109 E, the things in the wings are the barrels of 20 mm canons. The Bf 109 carried 2 20 mm cannons in the wings and a couple of mashine guns on too of the engine, in front of the pilot.

Being a neophyte scale modeler, I am curious to know the magnifier, if any, that you use. The canopy seems to require very accurate painting. Yours is excellent. I don’t think my vision, even with glasses, is up to the job. I truly appreciate your video and find it to be well organized, professionally photographed, informative and enjoyable. Kudos and thanks.
Thank you so much William! No, I don't use a magnifier. There is a trick, applied when using acrylic paints, where you can paint in the canopy frame then use a small, very pointed bit of wood (cocktail stick works well) and chase in the glasswork to the frame rubbing off the excess paint. Also, I like to do a first coat in the interior colour (often black) but very slightly diluted so its easier to scrape off. Then a top coat of the finish colour.
That's a great model! I truly like the parts added to the fuselage top and bottom and the many details to add! Small detail don'[t frighten me, they make the model all that much more interesting.
The presentation by the builder is also of very good quality: my compliments, Sir!
I have several rather old Airfix Bf 109s. Although I should stop building planes for lack of space in my apartment; this looks so very attractive, it entices me to get it anyway! Is it also available without the added paints et c.?
According to their web site they have the Bf-109E4 and Bf-109G6 in 1/72 scale, both as standard kits without paints, etc.

I'm a wargammer turned model kit builder, I just bought this kit today.
I am surprised at the quality considering it only cost me 7.99.
What are your thoughts on the paints, should I just stick with my tried and tested vallejo?

Hello Gary, am i right, that in earlier sets there was also a pilot included ? At that's times only on Revell sets pilots were missing.
Hi Helmut, yes there is a pilot as in all Airfix kits. If you want to use the pilot you must cut the rudder pedals so the legs will fit. It is shown in the instructions.

What's with the missing swastikas
They are not included in the kit as they are banned symbols in some countries.
You can buy aftermarket swastikas, if you really want to go for historical accuracy.
I would guess that TH-cam bots may flag the video as well.
Notwithstanding some sad people reporting the video should they be included.
And as Gary said. They're not included in the decal sheet.
