    Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I’m your host Deffinition and you’re now locked into the channel where we breakdown all the latest movies, new game releases, tv shows and comic books. Throughout this, we’re gonna be breaking down everything that you need to know about the 2019 Korean film: PARASITE as well as it’s ending.
    There will be heavy spoilers here so if you haven’t had a chance to watch the movie yet and don’t want to know what happens then I highly recommend that you turn off now.
    With that out the way I just wanna give a huge thank you for clicking this, now let’s get into our breakdown of Parasite.
    Parasite Plot Recap
    Parasite centres around the Kims, a family that live on the poverty line, barely getting by, living in a bug-infested basement and forced to do all kind of menial jobs in order to get enough money to live day to day. At its core, Parasite is a tale of two families, well three which I’ll get into later but primarily it centers around an extremely poor Father, Mother, Son and Daughter and a very wealthy one, made up of the same archetypes.
    The Kims are made up of Ki-taek, the father, Chung-Sook his wife, son Ki-Woo who later becomes known as Kevin and Ki-Jeong the daughter. One day, Ki-Woo’s friend gives them a large rock that is supposed to bring them luck and wealth. Whilst doing this he also informs Ki-Woo that he’s leaving to study abroad and one of his clients, Da-Hye, requires English Tutoring.
    Ki-Woo hasn’t got any qualifications in this, as his friend knows, however, he says that Ki-Woo knows enough English to fake it and after Ki-Woo falsifies documents with his sister he gains employment with the Parks, mainly by impressing Mrs. Park. Ki-Woo who now goes as Kevin really catches the eye of Da-Hye and he also massively impresses Mrs. Park who divulges that she is struggling to find an art teacher for her son Da-Song who she believes is a genius.
    Parasite Ending Explained
    Both Ki-Jeong and Mr. Park die from their wounds and Kevin awakens in after receiving brain surgery. He suffers from severe damage and has developed a twitch, laughs uncontrollably and At a trial with his mother the two are found guilty of fraud and put on probation. Ki-Taek is still at large, wanted for the murder of Mr. Park though the authorities have not been able to locate him.
    They tail Kevin who still keeps a close eye on The Parks house and one day notices one of the lights flickering, spelling out a message in morse code that he fled to the basement and has been living there. He buried Moon-Gwang. and there have been new occupiers there that Ki-Taek needs to sneak around in order to survive.

    The ending was so deep. The son made a plan about how he will do everything he can to buy his house and free his dad and live together. But earlier in the story there's a scene where the dad says no plan is the best plan because whenever you make a plan it never happens according to the plan. So I think maybe the dad dies there and the son and mom end up living the rest of their lives in poverty.

    The poor families fight over the rich family's scraps. It highlights the class divide in Korea, which is a popular and pervasive topic in korean media and culture right now. The Kim family mom kicks the other poor wife down the stairs, while both families are killing eachother over who has to stay in the basement (poverty) and who can join the elite. but neither of them do, and they never will

    the ending is pretty sad though. It's too realistic for a story with totally out of there plot, especially with that bit of "good" ending only to cut back into reality with the son kevin perspectives. The saddest thing about this, none of this people are "evil" like your typical movie villains, they're just normal poor people with terrible livelihood & making terrible mistakes.

    Honestly, I felt like there was a lot of North Korean imagery. The first man who lived in the basement praised the homeowner like a god, thanking him through Morse code, turning on the lights as we walked up the stairs and looked so happy to see his god in person.

    • @grape4226
      @grape4226 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It really just relates to the cruel conditions North Koreans live in, but still look up to Kim Jong Un like he’s a god, praising him for the land they live in.

  • @yesteryeardude370
    @yesteryeardude370 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    You missed a few of things: The sister dying at the end and the curse of laughter instead of grief from Kevin, the amazing parallel drawn from the threat of war with North Korea from the press of a button, and the quote from Kevin's dad "Never plan anything, if you don't plan anything and something goes wrong, it won't matter because you never put effort to begin with"; this saying can be compared to the amount of time and training the family used to become parasite just for things to blow up in their faces.

  • @thedaddrive
    @thedaddrive 4 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    I think the biggest function of this film is in highlighting the rather innocent ignorance by the rich towards the poor. The wealthy family is portrayed as very polite, and reasonable people who are not particularly arrogant or malicious. But they are clueless about the lives of the people that they employ around the house and accidentally offend them by reacting to the driver's smell instinctively. The poor admires the rich and gets to know so much about them and almost convinces themselves that their lives are practically the same as that of their employers only to face the rude awakening later. The film title Parasite is also not a flattering way of describing the less fortunate members of the society, and this juxtaposition of portraying the rich as innocent and poor and conniving and somewhat cruel makes this film so unique of movie that speaks to capitalism. Perhaps there are call outs for both extremes, the wealthy to raise their level of awareness regarding the poor and the poor to not obsess over the glamorous neighbors...

    • @sammavitae114
      @sammavitae114 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Jung The director starts the movie with the camera moving down to see the family in their sub- basement. The director Bong Ho uses this device a lot . When we see Mr Parks family they are at the top of the hill. They never notice anything below them . Example the daughter never looks under the bed even though the dog is pointing at Kevin. Mr Park and his wife don’t see Ki trek and family under the coffee table. Mr. Park’s wife doesn’t even look down at her bowl and doesn’t see Hanwoo beef mixed with cheap ordinary noodle.
      When Mr Ki Tek and family have to go back to their place the director shows how far down they really are from Mr Park’s place , they have to go down long, long, stairs then down and through a tunnel then down more stairs and an alley. In reverse the director always makes it seem easy and quick to go up the hill to Mr. Parks place. This is exactly the delusion the poor have; once they get a little break it will be quick to get to the top.
      I am curious though about Kevin’s family name that starts with Ki does the Korean word for cockroach begin with Ki?

      Depends on who you really think the parasite is. Some would say it's the wealthy, firing people so easily. They had very little compassion, but also didn't need it to survive. Even the housekeeper was a parasite in her own ways.

    • @nuderobot4998
      @nuderobot4998 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sammavitae114 Interesting observation! The Korean word for parasitic worm is "Ki-saeng-ch'ung", hence the wormy spirals in the Korean characters of the poster. It took a non-Korean speaker to think of it :)

    • @mightza3781
      @mightza3781 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not innocent ignorance, but willful ignorance. All that talk about crossing lines, subway smell and the way the Park family live in a house literally on top of a hill. It's not that they don't notice anything below them, but they choose to because it's unsightly. It doesn't take much for them to fire their old driver and old housekeeper, swapping them out like disposable things. When Mr Kim' was trying to stop his daughter from bleeding out, Mr Park was only concerned about his own son fainting, yelling at him.

    Here’s what you take away at the end of the film: that Parasite is quite possibly the greatest film of the decade. It’s hard to assess such a broad category of films in a best-of fashion but in all seriousness, it might be one of the greatest films of the 21st century. What sets it above is two things: the shift in the genre from comedy to thriller to horror and how it actually pulls it off and secondly, Parasite is a movie with a PERFECT title because it embeds itself into the psyche of the viewer and you take away so much, leaving one enveloped in deep thought and intrigue about what they just watched. I just saw it a few days ago. I knew it was going to be a masterpiece based on the reviews and the high regards I hold for the recommendations of those who told me this. But wow it went so far beyond my already highly held expectations. I am really hoping it wins best picture at the Oscars. Saying it deserves it is a gross understatement.

    1. You dont get tomato sauce when u order pizza. The usual condiments are hot sauce/ oregano (You can also get stuff like onion mustards from certain franchises).
    2. The son laughing uncontrollably could be a condition, but i personally agree with another view i found wherein he sees the absurdity in the doctor not looking like a doctor, and the detective not looking like a detective; The reality the son sees where being presentable for the job is more important than actually being a good detective/ doctor. (He also talks about whether he fits during the party)
    3. (Makeshift) community shelter. Shows the thunderstorm which looked like bliss up there was actually a monsoon that flooded many homes down under. You can see markings on the floor to show its actually a gymnasium + auditorium for stage activities.
    4. 8:33 Notice the Semi-basement vs Basement in this scene. The window being a motif of a view, a screen of the outside world. In the Kims, its the ordinary people that could at any time peak into the house. In the Parks a personal space, a sign of luxury. Also the dimensions of the large window are of the dimensions of a typical cinema screen. In this case, the window is a sign of hope, the basement has no windows and is locked away from the outside world.

  • @RobinMarks1313
    @RobinMarks1313 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My son made me watch Parasite. I love my son and I love this movie. So, this means I analyzed it to death. I know why people say this is a dark comic horror. Sure, that's true, but everybody is missing it's real meaning. Also, yes, it's all about class struggle, but here again, we're missing the real, grander theme. It's a war film. I have a long explanation, and I could write about my entire theory, but no one gives a hoot about my ideas. Sure, every once in a while, people really like my comments or other things I've written on other sites. But it's getting me nowhere. Poor me. You can take take this comment out of context, and judge me instantaneously. Please do. It's just that I given away so many ideas, and exuded too much blood and tears to bother much anymore. I write for completely selfish reasons. Also, I like to argue with people from time to time just to vent some anger. But I'm not rude or crude. I try to be funny, and I always get the last word. So, you can engage me, but it won't go as you expect. Ah, I feel better. I stopped writing about my thoughts on Parasite months ago. I was so excited, and then deflated when people didn't respond sufficiently to keep me curious. Poor me. If you've suffered this my diatribe, and made it this far, poor you, but I'll give you a prize for your endurance. The thing to look at is the kid's arrows. And watch him, because the war theme is centered on him. Oh, and I have an idea about the little boy and this is not part of the war theme. The little fella has Autism. I know he was shocked and traumatized by the "ghost", but there's much, much more. So, I think I'm done here, it's up, up, and away to the next mystery and adventure. Oh, don't be fooled and think that I think I'm Superman, and all strong, a hero, and such, no. I'm a freakin' alien. And I'm insane. I even have a certificate and lots of scientific labels attached to my being. Maybe I'm writing this comment in this particular fashion to prove that fact to myself. Ah, this feels good- a catharsis. And take all this with a PINCH! of salt- it's not a GRAIN of salt people! A grain doesn't make any good damn sense. A pinch is nothing. If you add a grain of salt to a soup, it does nothing. If you add a pinch of salt, it adds enhances the flavours. So, take this with a pinch of salt because I am conceited enough to know I can be funny at times and I have a sense of humour. Which means, trolls do your best, and if you attack me, I will most defiantly laugh at the joke and admit that I'm a foul up. Where was I, and why am I still going? Oh, I know. I will give you one more clue to why it is a film about war. The Indigenous Tribal Headdress that Ki-teak where's is the clue. Forget about Mr. Park's headdress, that's not the important one. Ki-teak is wearing the headdress for a very specific purpose. That purpose, to make it a war film.
    That's it. I sometimes don't edit and don't care if I make mistakes. I don't car. but, I really went on and on at speed writing this, so I need to check it. I took typing is school, but I'm not the fastest and it's hard to keep up with my manic thoughts.
    the end.

    The basement became a prison for the father, he replaced the other strange guy living there. The son and mother became depressed, fair enough penalty. The rock that was supposed to bring luck almost got him killed. This movie was really good, specially the original story, the warm and dark humor and aestetics/scenography.

  • @PetePuebla
    @PetePuebla 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    He really should consider his options because you were right, he might be able to go to prison and at least his family may be able to see him once in awhile. I'm not sure if they have a death penalty in South Korea for murder but maybe if she gets a good lawyer he can plead insanity. It wasn't premeditated murder but an act of Rage. Either way he has to consider spending the rest of his life in the basement or in prison one or the other.

    This movie was fine at best. It is not subtle with its depiction of haves and have nots. I admit that the 3rd act of the movie surprised me and i didnt see it coming, but that does not excuse the otherwise shallow story. I didnt care about either family. If anything it just made me feel bad for the rich family because of how over the top evil they made poor people look. The bug analogy you made was perfect in the most negative way, they were literally human cockroaches, which i assume was the point, but then what was the message the film was trying to say? It came off as some kind of anti-poor propaganda movie made to scare rich people.
    This is the story of Nihilism and Apathy. It showed how little people care about each other. That life is pointless, empty, sad and everyone dies regardless of who you are and where you come from. Everything you do is doomed to fail. Dreams are fleeting and will never become reality. No one cares, no one will help, why should you care. Everyone ends up in the ground figuratively and literally

    This notion that this movie has characters that you can relate to isn't something I agree with. The movie is heavy in plot devices and social commentary, and it does them very well. But the characters are secondary to the plot and social issues. Why should I feel connected to any of these characters? Because they're poor? That isn't enough, so it must be something else. Because they're deceitful to the house owners? Nah. It's funny, sure, but not relatable. And what are the individual personalities of each of the main characters? I couldn't tell because the movie is more interested in they're planning and carrying out their plan. Yeah, I just don't see how the characters are three dimensional
