As a East Coast dude I can attest that the Northeast is way different than the South, Midwest, or the West. Most Latino's and black's are considered pretty much the same except for cultural differences. A lot of people have relatives that are other than themselves. There's still tension, just not as pronounced. Gang's don't flourish here as they do in many places either, even though people claim to be from one or another. For us being territorial isn't too much of an issue, people move. If your homie is a square, that's fine, keep him out of trouble. It is what it is. It's only any real trouble when you try to fit a square peg in a round hole, which happens quite often. The streets have always been glorified, if you're not built for the repercussions of participating, best not participate. There are options.

I spent some time locked up in Philly, and it was exactly as he described it. There were no racial boundaries. The inmates consorted with whomever they pleased, and things were peaceful. I ended up getting arrested in San Diego, and while in the holding cell, I overheard a White guy tell a Mexican guy that they are cool now, but once we enter the cell blocks, they don't know each other. Whites with the Whites, Mexicans with Mexicans, then there are the Brothers and the Others.

Thank God someone said this because nobody believes me about east coast politics. My entire family is in and out which is sad but I gotta admit what I am and what it is. I remember seeing a prison documentary where a guy from the east coast was doing time in Cali, he was Black/Mexican and said it never came up in the east coast prisons but in Cali he had to choose, he went black.
So it depends on the east coast. The county jails in Massachusetts at least do have politics. A lot of street gangs, and kids who are foster kids who end up joining the gangs. Guards are pretty decent. It's less of a race issue and more of a gang/block issue. There are white prison gangs. Mostly in the eastern part of the state. There's a lot of Russian and Italian mob dudes though.

There is a big difference in gun culture.I live south of LA in a decent neighborhood but people get shot all the time.In other parts of country people have guns but people over here use them.Everyone has a gun and even in nice places they will use them.I didn’t notice that wasn’t normal until I traveled that shootings aren’t normal the gangs out here are way more violent and the drug trade is way more controlled.

I was just deported from a Canadian prison. We think our correctional system is fucked up but in Canada you can't even eat without canteen. It's something like a concentration camp but designed like our American prisons. Just like San Quinten and built by an American business. The tax payer in Canada pays almost half what they earn in taxes to the government. They kick almost nothing down to us. I had to stay on my grind all day just to keep food in my mouth. Fuck Canada. Interesting video, but I don't know if he really answered that question "what do you think is the main cause of hatred and conflict among the races in California state prisons?". Presuming that the racism in the prisons is just a reflection of the overall racism in the society that surrounds them, I personally believe the main reason why there is so much racism in California may be that California as a state probably always has been socially very segregated. So when you bring race into the situation, that race factor will add up to the social equation as a whole, making racism grow stronger than it would in places with a history of greater social equality. Being from California I would say our prison gangs are solely to blame. You have to understand that our prison gangs go bacc to the 1950s - a very racist and segregated era in America history. Criminal syndicates like the Mexican Mafia, Aryan Brotherhood and BGF simply adopted that societal mindset and put it into action in the Californian prison system by dividing jails and prisons solely by race. And due to the founders and leaders of those organizations being lifers(individuals doing life in prison) they simply got stucc with that racist mindset. And as newcomers came by throughout the years they simply inherited those racist ideas and structures from the old time, gang leaders- not doing so meant a death sentence since you simply don’t defy gang leaders in Californian prisons. So as decades went by that whole race shit simply just became the norm in Californian jails/prisons.
I'm from CT. Done time in MS, AL & CT. There is a big difference. Being white, I definitely felt the "race line" down South as opposed to the east coast. I was actually pulled aside in MS and told that "we", as in whites, stick to our own kind.. But I also felt the racism from blacks a lot more in the south..

I spent some time locked up in Philly, and it was exactly as he described it. There were no racial boundaries. The inmates consorted with whomever they pleased, and things were peaceful.
I ended up getting arrested in San Diego, and while in the holding cell, I overheard a White guy tell a Mexican guy that they are cool now, but once we enter the cell blocks, they don't know each other. Whites with the Whites, Mexicans with Mexicans, then there are the Brothers and the Others.

Here's the deal. Both guys in the interview are from the west coast and have very little knowledge of east Coast geography. Which is understandable because they aren't from there.
I was born and raised on the east coast. What needs to be understood is that although Virginia is on the east Coast... anything from Maryland and Virginia down is technically what we call "Down South". Which is a totally different part of the Country. Different demographics. Different cultures. Different customs, accents, and Vibes.
Jailing in Virginia (down south) is totally different from Jailing in What people actually consider the east coast meaning Philly, Jersey. NY. etc.
Experiences in Graterford, Dallas, Rahway, Trenton State, Elmira, Sing Sing, Attica, etc... are different than "down South"

So it depends on the east coast. The county jails in Massachusetts at least do have politics. A lot of street gangs, and kids who are foster kids who end up joining the gangs. Guards are pretty decent. It's less of a race issue and more of a gang/block issue. There are white prison gangs. Mostly in the eastern part of the state. There's a lot of Russian and Italian mob dudes though.

There is a big difference in gun culture.I live south of LA in a decent neighborhood but people get shot all the time.In other parts of country people have guns but people over here use them.Everyone has a gun and even in nice places they will use them.I didn’t notice that wasn’t normal until I traveled that shootings aren’t normal the gangs out here are way more violent and the drug trade is way more controlled.

I was just deported from a Canadian prison. We think our correctional system is fucked up but in Canada you can't even eat without canteen. It's something like a concentration camp but designed like our American prisons. Just like San Quinten and built by an American business. The tax payer in Canada pays almost half what they earn in taxes to the government. They kick almost nothing down to us. I had to stay on my grind all day just to keep food in my mouth. Fuck Canada. I have a hundred or more stories about being in a foreign correctional facility. Let me know if you wanna know anything at all. Maybe it could help some folks who end up in foreign prison. Interesting video, but I don't know if he really answered that question "what do you think is the main cause of hatred and conflict among the races in California state prisons?". Presuming that the racism in the prisons is just a reflection of the overall racism in the society that surrounds them, I personally believe the main reason why there is so much racism in California may be that California as a state probably always has been socially very segregated. So when you bring race into the situation, that race factor will add up to the social equation as a whole, making racism grow stronger than it would in places with a history of greater social equality. Being from California I would say our prison gangs are solely to blame. You have to understand that our prison gangs go bacc to the 1950s - a very racist and segregated era in America history. Criminal syndicates like the Mexican Mafia, Aryan Brotherhood and BGF simply adopted that societal mindset and put it into action in the Californian prison system by dividing jails and prisons solely by race. And due to the founders and leaders of those organizations being lifers(individuals doing life in prison) they simply got stucc with that racist mindset. And as newcomers came by throughout the years they simply inherited those racist ideas and structures from the old time, gang leaders- not doing so meant a death sentence since you simply don’t defy gang leaders in Californian prisons. So as decades went by that whole race shit simply just became the norm in Californian jails/prisons.
I'm from CT. Done time in MS, AL & CT. There is a big difference. Being white, I definitely felt the "race line" down South as opposed to the east coast. I was actually pulled aside in MS and told that "we", as in whites, stick to our own kind.. But I also felt the racism from blacks a lot more in the south..
