  • This baby seems a little late, lost one its parents. Learning to groom following the parents technique. Growing and learning more each day. Loons are territorial birds and generally only one pair is found on each lake, except for very large bodies of water where several pairs inhabit a lake. Usually the Loons are paired, unknown what happened to the mate. When one loon dies, the remaining member of the pair will find another mate. Another loon or pair may intrude on a territory next year. Juvenile loons are really on their own after mom and dad leave at about 12 weeks. The parents head off on migration in the fall, leaving juveniles to gather into flocks on northern lakes and make their own journey south a few weeks later.
