It's difficult to think of any mainstream car in 2014 that's got a bigger fight on its hands than the new Ford Mondeo. We first saw it almost three years ago at the Detroit Motor Show, where it was unveiled as the new US market's Ford Fusion.
Now, it seriously has its work cut out squaring up against German rivals from Audi, BMW and VW, as well as the latest models from the trendy SUV/crossover segment.
The Mondeo has been on sale in the US, badged as the Fusion, for almost three years, but Ford has made sure the Mondeo is bang up to date with all the latest tech and safety features.
There's a wide range of engines on offer, with more becoming available in 2015, but the all-important question is this: is the Ford Mondeo still the best handling car in the class?

You could really do without that drone some call "music" in your reviews. Other than that solid job as always. The Ford itself, being sold in US for a while, starts to look a bit last week. Still, should give the likes of Opel and the rest a good run for the money.

I very rarely defend Fords because i believe somewhat that they are overrated by motoring journalists, but having seen the new Mondeo in the flesh i have to say that the design impressed me. It is a very seductive car in the flesh especially with the drl, and it reminds me a lot of the Audi A7. Also, it hides its bulk very well indeed. I think Chris Hamilton and Ford have done a good job in designing this car unlike the rest of their range.

This is an excellent car. It looks best in black.
I have experienced the US Fusion version and was very disappointed in the driver seat. The bottom cushion is way to short offering no thigh support. Is the Euro version different in this respect?
I can't answer but I suspect that different seats are fitted to some Euro Fords in the US.
I am 6 ft 4 and have a Euro Fiesta, which is said to be very cramped in the front by US reviews I have read.... but not in my case!
Most likely. They changed a lot from the American Fusion to the European Mondeo. More supporting seats are in too

Expect the very best from Ford? My Ford broke down so much, it should have had a warning label on it.
My bad experience aside though, Mat Watson (in his review) gave a lot of praise to the Ford Mondeo.
Steering is always a tricky thing. On one hand you want it tight and responsive when you are on back roads with twists and turns. On the other hand, you want good power steering when you are in town and have to constantly stop and turn.
Very, very nice car. Shame we wated 3 years for it...
those buttons in the center console...what where they thinking? it looks like it was put together in a coffee brake, or just liftet out of a 1990th hatchback O.o
Hold back on those Dubstep Breaks pls.!! pretty off in this review for a big Family car - I´m happy I did not have it all over my living room stereo in the middle of the night. The Mondeo, well it´s properly very decent indeed and the front is good, but for looks it has become a too heavy - Those wheel overhangs are indeed not pretty in profile view. I like the lamps both front and rear.
you're wrong. as far as I know, buttons on center fascia is applied to all the same in US, Europe, Asia version. Ford changed all for this year.
Uh, the facelifted American car is identical to the one shown here, including those physical HVAC buttons. So no, Americans don't continue to get a "rubbish" design.
Americans have the same design, yes, but as shown here, the UK and Europe get a nice 5-door version instead of the traditional sedan platform we have. Same goes with Mondeo Wagon, Fiesta 3-door, and Focus Wagon variants. While there likely is a financial case not to bring those cars here, they are certainly more desirable in my eyes.
But it took the Europeans to sort it out
Alan Bowers It's all according to what would sell. Hatchbacks just don't do that well in the US, particularly in larger cars. Focuses come in sedan and hatch (no wagon)here, and sales are 40% hatch.
emjayay And that is a damn shame. Hatchbacks/wagons are really versatile and ultimately are a better fit for 90% of the drivers out there. The SUV/CUV craze here has quashed that idea. Shame about diesel options as well, especially for such a large country with its vast interstate system that would play right into that fuel's strong-suit.

As for the Mondeo being a competitor for new Passat....nah, not gonna happen. New Passat is way beyond anything in the segment, it's going to directly complete in the premium market, or the sort of sub-premium market, with the Volvo S60, Lexus IS, Infinity Q45, etc. It's too good to compete with Fords, Mazdas, Toyotas, Opels, etc.

Two reasons why the old Mondeo was great are gone... (Great handling and really comfy rear seats). This "one world, one Ford" thing isn't really working...

What made previous Mondeos special was great handling, now there's nothing special in this car. It's just a boring sedan.
Car is a last generation compared to the new MQB Passat....unfortunate. This launched in the U.S. going on 3 years ago...

still a nice car, BUT , three years too late to keep ahead in it's field. Remember seeing this three years ago with its Aston-like design features - but poor excuse not to have the model introduced into the European market at the same time as it's American release, what, Ford couldn't export them from the States? Perhaps in Europe they still had a backlog of the previous model to churn out before closing the factories. Doesn't the Mazda 6 use the same platform anyway, regardless, this Mondeo will still sell - especially to the fleet market.
So, one more German Ford model is ruined when it's gone international.... same as Focus. Doesn't handle as nice as the old one.

Great looking car! Interior tho seems a bit on the the dull side and not up to date somehow.. I don't believe this car will turn out to be a great seller for Ford. Next gen needs to come fast for the Mondeo to survive.
Would rather get the new passat
The audio here is royally screwed up. Speech volume jumps up and down between takes enough to deafen a headphone user, and even within takes (the seatbelt part). Recording quality is rubbish. Also, music is loud as hell and compressed. A 360° auditive cock up.
Who buy a Mondeo for handling? i would buy it for the ride.

The reviewer of AutoWeek is saying that the handling of the car is very good. A very different reaction than this review. Maybe its a personal thing.
Anyone who is saying that the mazda 6 has a better console than the mondeo didn't have a good look at it.
Also the front sheets of the mazda are very bad, much to small, maybe not for Azian size people...

Ponygt 662 Mk3 Focus is one of the best selling cars in the world because Ford sells it everywhere. Back to Europe, mk3 is quite a failure and it's not only about Golf because now there are a few other cars that sell better while previous Focus was #2.

Focus is a great car but golf specially mk7 is crossing boundaries,ford will survive with focus in europe till 2017 when mk4 focus will get launched,that will again be 99% as food aa mk7 golf as of now Focus is just 90% good as golf

New accord in Australia received a ANCAP 4 Star rating...me thinks accord isn't a good choice out of them.

Out of those four - Passat or 6. Mazda is sportier and better looking, Passat is more solid, more luxurious, has more options inside (more engines, better infotainment system etc). From 110km/h (~70mph) Mazda is very noisy inside, it's like driving with opened window.

Ever since Ford wanted to moved the Focus to other markets aka the rest of Europe/America the Focus hasn't handled the same & now sadly The Mondeo has gone the same way, with trying to give it more tech to make it more executive, it's got rid the trates that made it good
Real problem is the market doesnt care as much about handling anymore... if they did CUVs would not be the fastest growing segments
This thing is too big to be a real handler anyway. The current Focus is about the size of an old Mondeo and is not far off in handling. Same story with the Fiesta and old Focus
ford needs budget to build these cars with good handling, Ford nearly lost Europe due 2 recession, if they again promote enthusiasts market will kill Ford within next 5 years, so Ford took the safer approach, like what VW does, steering feedback, well its just a tool to steer use it for that, want fun go for ST,RS,GT..

I don't think going after the enthusiast market is what will save Ford. Top selling car in Europe is the Golf, correct? Unless it's tuned a lot differently than my wife's Rabbit I'd hardly call that an enthusiast's car. Plus again CUVs are the anti-enthusiast's car and are gaining a lot of ground in Europe. "Losing enthusiasts" is not the problem.

future62 You're incorrect. 1st and 2nd gen Focuses were 2nd best selling cars in Europe just a touch behind the Golf. Plus for a moment 1st gen Focus was the best selling car in Europe. Everything went bust when Ford introduced 3rd gen Focus, bigger, softer with quirky design. Now Focus struggles to stay in top 5 and Ford is loosing big money in Europe. Focus always were a better looking, better handling and still practical alternative for VW Golf, now it's just practical.
The front looks abit like an Aston Martin, the back looks like a KIA K3. Designers running out of ideas?
The front looks like an Aston because Ford owned them. They did it on purpose. Rear looks like an old Mondeo released in 2006.

Most Fords are ugly shit boxes. I've been looking for a decent 2nd hand car with under 40k under the clock in the small saloon category for a while and the dealers are constantly calling me about this new Mondeo they have. But I've told them, it's as dull as a Vauxhall Cavalier and it's as ugly as a cardboard box. Anything, just about anything is better than this. 3 series or A4 if you can afford, if not go for the Mazda 6 or even Accord, you'll get far more value for money and you'll be driving something that looks good inside and out.
How about a ford focus rs?

NikesZ28 The suspension was also great, it was very comfortably with very little body roll in the corners. Understeer was very limited as well.
Its already two years old.. Look at the interior, even a depressed person isn't going for this car in this segment.

Did you see Mazda 6's interior? You're not gonna tell me it looks better are you? Especially that central console lol it goes vertically down whereas in mondeos and passats it goes kind of diagonally with a little gradient. Mazda 6 is the one that looks depressing. As to the passat? Same old Passat - nothing's changed since the B6s really.
DAYM The B8 is brand new... It's even on a new platform, that it's looks aren't that different is because the people who buy them, don't want them to look (very) different.
Well oké the mazda 6, isn't my choise either, but it's dasboard and console looks better than the Ford Bunker Mondeo IMO. (I sat in one with leather seats and everything) They've really should've launched it 2 years ago,when the passat and insignia were kind of aging.
The Mondeo looks old already. It's exterior is oké but I just think the older one looks better/sporties as well.

this politic of diferent markets same car may save ford some money but it isn't doing so good in other areas... ford is gradually trying to makes (European costumers) swallow this americanised softened cars so that in a near future they won't need to set diferent tunning for diferent markets as just happened on this mondeo and on the last focus. this new politic is crap , we want more engaging cars like the previous focus and mondeo and by the way the latest focus doesn't suit the europeans taste designwise and is also less engaging than previously WTF!

Perhaps I'm a bit ignorant, but why would anyone want to buy a large, boring car like this, the passat, and others in its class? Small executive saloons aren't much more and are a lot more dynamic, SUVs offer more space, hot hatches are more fun...why do people (who aren't company reps) buy these?!
They buy it exactly for the reason you said. It's large so the backseat has more space for a family to go on long trips and not feel cramped especially if the kids are tall.
Hatchbacks are a lot more practical, the economy is extreme 64mpg with 180bhp 0-60 in 8 with a 140mph topspeed, its fast, luxuriously nice, safe and spacious, and cheaper than the pompous german brands with the extra dollar in the pocket you can normally buy the missis a nice car too rather than have her driving the kids to school in a 10 year old Nissan micra

It is fugly as a hatchback, may look better as a sedan, but it still won't look as good as the new Mazda 6 or VW Passat.
This car is so old in US..I`m sry but i can buy an used 2 liter ecoboost Ford Fusion Titanium for 15.000$..this brand NEW Mondeo will depreciate like mad :)) in Europe a brand new top spec 2liter automatic ford Mondeo will cost ~40k euro...i want to see what moron will say naaa i don't want a Bmw, Merc or Audi , i`l get a 40k Fusion...

I can hardly hear what he is saying. To make matters worst, he tries to speak fast while adding spices here and there. Watch how Mat Watson do his thing and you should see a clear difference/standard.

I noticed the sound got worse when he was in the back seat.. But not enought to call this the worst review ever :) The reviewer seemed knowledgeable and the review was informative. The ecoboost mustang review was bad tho!

It wasn't that bad, really. The drop in quality was noticeable, but not enough to bin the take.

The 1.5 is rated 181hp. If it's as responsive and as good as the 3 cylinder 1 liter, pretty good too.

Center console looks downright old and tacky. They should have redesigned it from scratch instead of just throwing in boring round buttons from aliexpress.
Mature or Manure? This is an awful car. If all you want is transport form Point A to B then this is your car. The Fusion ECO Boost 4WD is the real thing. UK Ford should be ashamed of what they are offering customers. What a let down and step down coming from the Sapphire Cosworth. What did they do, fire all the fun people that has worked for Ford UK since the 50s?
