- Keir Starmer says the Labour party are in position to win the next election after Wakefield by-election victory - but he's scrapped the 2019 manifesto.

The Labour leader told Rachel Wearmouth that when he took over from Jeremy Corbyn colleagues said he'd never take Labour to victory within just one term - but, after Wakefield, a Labour win at the next general election looks within Keir Starmer's grasp.
However, despite asserting that the next election would be fought on the economy and the cost of living crisis, Starmer refused to say whether he supports previous Labour pledges to scrap tuition fees and raise taxes on the top 5% of earners.
He also commented on the Conservative government's Northern Ireland Protocol bill, saying colleagues in Dublin and Belfast do not trust Boris Johnson, after the Prime Minister effectively tore up his own agreement struck during the Brexit negotiations.
The Labour leader was interviewed by Rachel Wearmouth at the New Statesman's inaugural Politics Live conference.

I don't think that the election results is an achievement of the Labour Party, it's the negative achievement of the Tories. Labour is boring and not labour friendly anymore and they are missing clear stands to important topics.
The LibDems have a much clearer stand to Brexit and other topics. Starmer is a good talker but missing the action....

Johnson and his client media suck nearly all the media Oxygen out of the system, the same happened with Trump over in the US
In what way are they boring? If you mean they're not bogged down in sleaze like the Tories, isn't that a good thing? Politics is a serious matter and this country is in chaos. The message I took from this interview is that Starmer wants to get the economy growing again and it is going take a huge amount of time and effort to sort out the mess we're in. To do that we need serious- minded politicians who are going to focus on fixing the economy.
He barely answered a single question. It's very difficult to know what he believes because of this approach. Mick Lynch on the other hand answers every question because he knows what he believes in and what his mission/job is. Neither men are particularly charismatic, but one of them has beliefs...

First 75% of the media are seamless with the Tories there just blatant propaganda tools there's a great video by Byline called the Billionaires bitch
Second I've worked with no end of managers and he comes over as a team leader not afraid to put people in post who will lead at that department, Reeve is an economist graduate from the LSE

I will vote labour if they commit to PR. If not then I will vote lib dem even though they have no hope of winning. I do not understand how he doesn't see this as a huge issue and how he has zero ideas as to how to improve it. There are PR systems that retain the constituency link!

Lab 2017: 22,987 votes
Lab 2019: 17,925 votes
Lab 2022: 13,166 votes
And Keir Starmer is all but doing a victory lap.
I know some people struggle with this but Labour just won Wakefield, in 2019 we lost it. Winning elections is actually better than losing them. Hope that helps.
Turnout is always lower during by elections so there is no point in comparing them to general elections

It's the only policy they've got... Starmer has already played the "Pledge" card and broken every one. Corbyn was honest, so you knew what he stood for... Starmer is dishonest, so who will now believe a word he says?
Why can he not answer any questions plainly? The tuition fees - anyone have a clue what he answer he actually gave to a direct question? All this ambiguity and obfuscation is quickly turning me off.

He's a decent bloke but I think he's in the wrong party. He wants to keep industries privatised and keep us out of the EU but the majority of the Labour Party wants the opposite.

If he did win in 2024, and then 2029 after that, he would be 72 by the end of his second term, so even then, two terms seems unlikely

Labour isn't Labour... It's Zionist Labour... a very different animal. From Kier Hardie to Kier Starmer: I doubt that Kier Hardie would have defended the actions of apartheid Israel, but (for whatever reason!) Kier Starmer is an apartheid Israel denier and defends the indefensible actions of Israel... perpetuating its crimes in the UK, expelling Labour socialists who make a principled opposition to its crimes, falsely labelling them as antisemites. He's a sitting duck for a Mumsnet interviewer, posing truthful questions about his indefensible support for Israel.
Whatever one thinks about the way he became leader, Keir deserves a chance to lay out his vision. The problem is he comes across as disingenuous and uninspiring...
He is being interviewed by a very sympathetic journalist and she's more interesting than him.
Tony Blair was interesting, Obama was inspiring, Andy Burnham sounds like he believes what he says, Keir's just meh.
Also Keir does this thing that Boris does...I.e. pretend he was not involved in Labour decision making prior to 2020. Interestingly, his effort to make Labour pro-remain post-Brexit in 2019 was one of the reasons Labour got trounced at the last election.
It a bit like saying: Whatever one thinks about the reasons Putin had for invading Ukraine (fighting Nazis)... he should be given a chance to...

@@SlowhandGreg Starmer is returning the Labour party to a party that's reliably obedient to power. It's very important to continue the elite program (pretty much across the spectrum) to destroy Corbyn and everything that he stood for. It's intolerable to elite British opinion that there should be a Labour party that actually responds to its constituents, a Labour party that's concerned with the interests of working people, and works for their benefit, that pursues the policies that won a big Labour majority 2017 - terrifying the establishment! So that has to be killed, and it was killed with a lot of fakery about anti-semitism. The deplorable attacks, others and Starmer carried out, are demonstrative of that obedience to power. A Labour party that is Thatcher lite in the style of Tony Blair, and won't ruffle feathers of either the United States or anyone who's important in Britain.

The economic path forward is through a push to switch the economy from fossil devolve power to the regions and fire up small businesses who are the lifeblood of the economy outside the City. I'd hope you'd get a raft of legislation on workers rights and an uplift in the minimum wage ban fire and rehire zero hours Non Dom and close down all the fekin tax havens.

first councils gains since 2014, first polling leads on the economy since 2013, first by-election win since 2012 and first consistent leads in preferred prime minister since 2007, but Starmer's Labour shouldn't be excited?

What you're saying is that Labour has returned to its brief high water mark of 2017 (within 2%, with caveats: a by-election with lower turnout and mid-term); but Labour's majority increased to 18% (in 2017 this was 5%), which suggests that they could win a majority in the country at large. There are lots of things to criticise about the party and Starmer's leadership, but there's no question that going from the worst result since the 1930s to being on course to scrape a majority at the next election is a real achievement

A promise???.... This guy will Pledge It!!!... (... If you're late to the party, Starmer made a whole bunch of pledges, promises, statements of belief etc to get elected party leader... then, he dropped all the pledges, changed his deeply held beliefs... and started to expel all those whose who believed what he pledged... and were critical of apartheid Israel)...

I also get the vibe that he has never read a book about politics or economics because his vocabulary is so limited 😂. It is good to keep some form of constituency link, but it's totally possible to do so under a proportional(ish) system. STV and mixed-member proportional representation keep constituency links whilst making it much more proportional. They're not 100% proportional (and tbh I'm not in support of totally proportional systems anyway, as they tend to fracture politics too much), but they are much more proportional. Heck, even AV would be better than FPTP whilst keeping the constituency link.
