I tried to change out my expansion valve thru the firewall, it went horribly bad, ended up scarring up the O-ring fit on the evaporator nubs, so I had to go ahead and do what you did and change it all. May I ask you, after how many miles do you usually need to replace the Evaporator and Expansion Valve? One of our cars 2001 Saturn SL2 has ~135 kmi on it. The car (we bought it pre-owned, but it was only 60 kmi on it) never had a heater working, but there was AC. Then AC went down and dealer couldn't fix it properly (they replaced a compressor). I mean they fixed it, but it failed again after a year. Their attempts to fix it with new compressors didn't work (they put like 3 new one by one and a failure after 2 weeks again). It was like 10 years ago, it is our back up car, so we didn't worry much. Now I think to look into other components of the AC there. The most complicated is Evaporator of course, and most likely it is working (when I switched the AC before it was blowing well, but not cold air). But I think maybe still better to replace it just bcs of the mileage, while I drained coolant and the AC system is completely empty (I checked). Thank you for your great film.

    • @dannysdiygarage
      @dannysdiygarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Evaporator only needs replacement if it’s leaking or plugs, it’s not usually a mileage thing, same for the expansion valve

    • @olenaerhardt7725
      @olenaerhardt7725 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannysdiygarage I'm afraid everything is clogged there (I mean in Evaporator) w/old leaves (I saw in one film when he opened it). Another thing here is that I don't know exactly what oil it is there in that Evaporator. It is PAG of course, but which one: PAG-46 or PAG -100? Is there any oil left there at all after so many years? Those oils don't mix. On top of that I don't know what oil was added to the compressor, when dealer attempted to repair it. My question is: Is it possible to clean somehow the whole system? I think not, bcs, about 2 oz in Evaporator, 2 oz in Compressor, how you can clean all that? But maybe there is a way? Thank you for your replay.

    • @dannysdiygarage
      @dannysdiygarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can clean out the system, it’s done all the time, requires removing the components including compressor, flush the system and add the recommended oil and freon

    • @olenaerhardt7725
      @olenaerhardt7725 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannysdiygarage It is not a problem for me to remove the compressor and condenser, but evaporator (evaporator also has some oil) would be hard, but that is O'K, I'll learn, there is no way around I see. Actually it is quite interesting project, and I think it is the only way to fix the system properly. Probably that is why they never can fix AC system in the shops, bcs they can't replace everything (I mean they could, but price). All those different oils mix up, and as a result AC perform purely. Thank you.

      Sounds odd, are you sure it's not a bad gauge, I hate to guess without properly diagnosing, I would need to see all gauge readings, however check the compressor if the high side gauge does not show pressure and the low side does not drop when the compressor is engaged, Does the low pressure gauge get pulled down? Component Amount Of Lubricant To Add
      Accumulator 2 oz.
      Condenser 1 oz.
      Evaporator 2 oz.
      Filter Drier 1 oz.
      for the compressor, drain the old compressor and add what comes out to the new compressor, if nothing comes out add 2oz to the new compressor, be-careful the new compressor sometime comes with oil, so you will need to drain it and start with what came out of the old compressor.
