  • Are you a DIYer and want to check the valve clearance yourself?
    This video shows how to check and adjust valve clearance on a VTX 1300. The check should be performed every 10,000 miles.
    The link below is for a video on how to remove the gas tank on a VTX. This step has been skipped to keep the video short.
    Only special tool needed is a 4mm open wrench. You can buy them online at amazon or ebay...buy the craftsmen set of small or miniature wrench set that includes a 4mm wrench. They run like $8 shipped.

    Showed everything I needed to see!
    Just got my VTX with 44k miles. Did the oil change, adjusted the idle and A/F mixture, and while I was doing that, I could hear some valve noise. So, I thought it might be about time to check them.
    Clear and concise video.

    I bought the mini wrenches from Lowe’s for 24 bucks. eBay had them on sale lowest price 26 highest price was 53..
    🤦🏻‍♂️
    Thanks for the video though .
    You did a good job. I feel confident I can do it myself now.

    Thanks mate, just something that bogged me was your description of the filler gages at the beginning, you mixed up intake and exhaust saying the .006 was for exhaust and .012 for intake, which is the contrary

      Nice catch!!
      But when I get to like 4:30. I go into detail, and do give the right numbers there.

    Hi friend. Very useful video. Thank you very much. One question here: What about that filter is that on top of battery cover? Engine Breath? Thanks again.

      Thank you!
      Very sharp eye. Since I removed the crank case breather hose from the back side of the air box, I ended up routing it to a filter that I placed on top of the battery. Over the years I have placed napkins under it because I get some oil out of it from time to time.

    Are the valves suppose to move up at all when in the combustion stroke? Also when you say rotate 180 degrees, the wrench?

    • @footprintsinconc
      @footprintsinconc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      in the combustion strok (when the fuel has sparked and piston on its way down) none of the valves are open.
      when i say 180 degrees...i'm talking about turn the crank.

    Hello I’m in compression stroke and I have no play on the rocker arms in the video time 6.50 what do you recommend I do? Thank you

    • @footprintsinconc
      @footprintsinconc  ปีที่แล้ว

      1st i would make sure that you are in the compression stroke. turn the engine over and align the marks and double check yourself.
      if it is the compression stroke and the intake rockers are not moving, then you need to adjust the intake rocker to allow for needed gap of 0.006

    I would remove the spark plugs to make it easier to turn over.

      Thx for sharing your thoughts.
      It's not very difficult to turn...would help to verify if you looked through where you removed the spark plug

    This is why I want a bike with hydraulic lifters.

    • @footprintsinconc
      @footprintsinconc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      this is the only item of maintenance on this bike...hard to find something that doesn't require some type of maintenance....rest is just engine and drive shaft oil change.
