The absurdity of the concept kills me - meeting David Bowie at a party, confiding in him, then he spontaneously writes a song ridiculing you about your weight right in front of you.
Hilarious and surprising how perfectly Bowie portrays a mean spirited total asshole, he nailed it. What a talented guy.

What makes this even better is knowing that Bowie was Gervais' hero, and even modeled his voice after him when Ricky was a singer. They became actual friends, which is just wholesome.

i know he has said this for years but in one of the very first XFM episodes in 2001, Ricky and Steve both slag off Bowie saying they could never get into him and that he was overrated. This was just after the office but before it exploded.

@@thedishonestjeffsokol2489 I think they actually hold Bowie in such a HIGH regard that they deadpan joke about him being overrated because it's less funny to just fawn over him. Bowie is Gervais ' all-time hero. Like in a massive way. Did anyone else notice, the year Bowie died, Gervais was often making remarks about death and the shortness of life, thereafter he seems inspired by death, and next he proceeded to create After Life. Not coincidental surely

0.40-1.17 is probably the best thing I've ever seen a genius do - just an artistic god having to painfully listen to what seem like utterly mundane concerns far beneath him. It's beautiful that a generous, peerless, artistic god is playing a ruthless version of what he could have been like. Watch That Man - he could do it all. Including deadpan comedy.

  • @michaelh.117

Extras is an under-appreciated show. This scene is one of the classics (and it makes my heart ache with emptiness over Bowie's absence), but there are equally hilarious bits with Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and many others. Maggie (the blonde character here, played by Ashley Jensen) repeatedly brushing off Orlando Bloom is priceless.

I live in Hollywood, and I have had experiences just like this.
Often when meeting celebrities, people get nervous and start blabbing and complaining as if they are talking to their best friend.
I’ve also INSPIRED comedians and actors to make fun of LOSERS, that were based on me!
Ricky Gervais took that nugget of truth. And expanded it. Made it as uncomfortable as possible. Having David Bowie and a room full of people singing the song about him.
    Sooooo enjoyable.

I’ve never really been much of a Gervais fan, so when I first saw this scene, I howled laughing. And then I realised that it was actually a genius move. They went over to Bowie to avoid the obnoxious twat who was hurling abuse at him, only to have one of the most talented musicians we’ve ever seen tear him to shreds in the most publicly humiliating fashion possible. Every time I’ve seen it since, I can feel the shame coming from Gervais and it makes me feel a teeny bit bad for finding it funny. I’m still not a fan of Gervais, but I’ll give him credit for his ability to do pathos so well.
