Excellent lesson Alex. I've seen a number of "break out of the pentatonic box" videos but this one is exceptional. Your description of the mixolydian mode as a dominant 7 scale...brilliant. Well done sir!
Having knowledge is really the key and as a self taught bedroom guitar player who has just banged out the pentatonic for ever this is really an eye opener thanks a lot truly appreciated
Thanks for the comment buddy, that is music to my ears. I'm also self taught and I know how hard it is to gain new vocabulary. My whole intention with this channel is to share the key things that really pushed me forward. Very glad you found it useful 🙏🏻
Thanks for the comment Matthew. In my opinion it's absolutely essential to break a scale down into those elements. Make sure to go back and give the Major scale the very same treatment! 👌🏻
what great teaching. my head is inflating with concepts I've never dreamed of....so clear....a very near new patreon supporter here.....there's nobody I've seen here even close
Wonderful! Thank you for the kind words my friend 🙏🏻 I've built up a year's worth of weekly lessons (plus bonus mid-week exclusive lessons), of equal detail and depth over on my Patreon. 👍🏻
Another great composition, performance and lesson, full of details to improve our soloing, thank you very much Alex, your channel is an unending source of very useful material!
A great discussion and application of the dominant scale and playing triad within. I recently bought 2013 blonde custom shop 335 63’ reissue and really like it. Can’t wait to dig into this one!
Yeah Larry Carlton … in my opinion he represents the perfect bridge of blues to jazz ..he explains in Rick Beato channel how he was influenced by this style..very interesting !;my favorite album Fingerprint and on asolid ground and particularly the song all in good time ! Robben Ford too as you mentioned Alex ! Yeah All blues …ahahah this song was one of song that musicians always played in first on open scene for jam when I ve made my first step in guitar 35 years ago … I remember 👍 thanks Alex for this good vidéo. One more in your channel
Thanks for the comment my friend, I'm really glad you're a fan of this style of the blues too! I haven't seen that Beato interview yet but will certainly check it out! 🙏🏻
I really appreciate you sharing this information in a way I can grasp and share with others. I will continue to play the lottery in hopes of sending you the compensation you deserve.
All Blues - what a gold mine to start with. Can't wait to dig into this! That arpeggio/chord extension connection is lightning in a bottle. It's a ways off, but I can imagine stealing some of those great melodies from the Kind of Blue track.
Creamy Honky mids...now' you're talkin 👍 I noticed right off how you nailed Carlton's vibe. Lazy J20 with Lucy Dreamer ? wow, I just looked it all up 😎
Thanks man, glad you dig the tones! The Lazy J has been a favourite amp of mine and a mainstay since I got it ten years ago now. Love it. And the Lucydreamer is a killer TS type of drive pedal, so smooth 👌🏻
Great lesson 👏 there's a lot to work ! Could you breakdown how you practice the scale with ascending 3rds, and how you outline the triads on the scale ?
Thanks for the comment buddy, glad you enjoyed the lesson. That’s a tough question to answer in text form, but in relation to the triads portion of it, it’s basically the same process as I outline for the arpeggios in this video. Pick a parent scale, say C major, and stack thirds from one note at a time. You’ll end up with 7 triads; 1) CEG (C major) 2) DFA (D minor) 3) EGB (E minor) 4) FAC (F Major) 5) GBD (G Major) 6) ACE (A minor) 7) BDF (B diminished) Then repeat this process for the key of G, then the key of D and so on through the cycle of fifths until you have all 12 keys mapped out 👍🏻
Of course, there's many incredible things we can do with the Pentatonic.. but, it's a well known sticking point amongst players who find it hard to move past it.
Hey buddy, I would 100% choose the es335.. more versatile, more open and less compressed sounding, has more twang and top end if needed too. Love it! 👌🏻
One of my favorite guitarists of the late 70's and early 80's Larry Carlton. Nice lesson. 🎉
Thank you Scott.. Larry is such a tasteful player 👌🏻
One of my favorite guitar players of the late 20s and early 30s' Alex Farran 😛
Excellent lesson like always. Very logically laid out and pushes you while not being ungraspable. Superb tone, taste, and teaching! Trifecta!
Thank you Jay, I really appreciate the kind words mate! 🙏🏻
The man with exquisite taste and chops strikes again! ❤
Ah thank you Gert, glad you liked it!

Going backwards a little into your stellar catalog of lessons and this lesson was really what I needed-thx
Thanks Mark, glad you’re still finding inspiring lessons to dig into! 🙏🏻
I have never been taught to think about the triads inside the scale, that concept alone, if I work hard enough, opens up so many paths.
Thanks for the comment Matthew. In my opinion it's absolutely essential to break a scale down into those elements. Make sure to go back and give the Major scale the very same treatment! 👌🏻

Perfect timing, All blues, so what n freddie the freeloader is what I'm working on. Love the modal jazz. Very clear and pertinent lesson, thank you!
Very cool! Thanks for the comment buddy 🙏🏻

That's so good to hear, thank you my friend! 🙏🏻
Super solo and lesson. I finally managed to watch it today as I was late getting to the premiere. Great job as always.
Thanks a ton Chris! Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you're doing well buddy.

Thanks Alex. Can you do more on chord progressions and voicing"s please? Thanks
That's a great idea, thanks buddy. More chord progressions coming soon!
@@AlexFarranGuitar Thanks. I love taking my chord understanding to higher levels
Really great lesson Alex. A lit of a stretch for my level of knowledge, but definitely worth watching a few times. Thanks!
Take your time with it buddy, and just chip away slowly at the theory stuff. 👌🏻

I’m not sure penta is really a prison (ask BB King) but this said, I’m ready for fusion Larry blues 😉
Of course, there's many incredible things we can do with the Pentatonic.. but, it's a well known sticking point amongst players who find it hard to move past it.
@@AlexFarranGuitar yeah, of course, I know. Just to fake the smart guy 😉

I hope you put this on Gumroad for the tabs. Thanks.
Glad you liked it buddy.. this one is a Patreon exclusive as far as the accompanying lesson materials go.. there's so much stuff in there! 😮💨
Beautiful playing! What strings do you use for your 335?
Thank you so much! I use D'addario NYXL 11-49 gauge.. great strings 👌🏻
Hello Alex,
Hope you're well. If you could only choose between a Les Paul or ES335, which would it be and why? Hope you can help here ! Bests, J
Hey buddy, I would 100% choose the es335.. more versatile, more open and less compressed sounding, has more twang and top end if needed too. Love it! 👌🏻
Hi Alex.. are you going to put this up on Gumroad..??
Hey buddy, no, I'm afraid this one is a Patreon exclusive as far as lesson materials and print-outs go. Thanks for asking 🙏🏻
When you did the triads it was g -am-bdim. I thought B was a bmin in the G scale and the dim came at the sixth chord f#dim? Am I missing a step?
Yes, you’re thinking of the G major scale as opposed to what we’re dealing with here which is the G mixolydian (fifth mode of the C major scale) 👍🏻
@@AlexFarranGuitar yes I realized that right after I said it. Thank you for replying though. Really digging your lessons
Is that guitar a 335 or a casino?
It's a 335.. check out the "Tone talk" part of the video near the end ;)
@@AlexFarranGuitar will do, thank you!
Well, another 10 years work… « thanks » Larry, hum, sorry, I mean Alex 😉🙏
Haha 🤣🙃 Glad it gives you a few new ideas my friend 🙏🏻🍻
Miles davis, kind of blue
Great album! 👌🏻
