absolutely the best lesson on the history, theory and practicals of getting that sound and style. As a fairly dedicated but OLD pianist , I commend this to EVERY younger player everywhere ...on ANY instrument at all actually . The lesson is simply perfect and done with a great attitude and no showing of any type of patronising or cool dude or ''teacher '' crap...... ...just the FACTS ! Molto , molto.... MOLTO Bravissimo ! Alex mate, that is fabulous and thanks you so much.
A perfect synthesis of many of the greatest stylists of this wonderful blues subgenre, this is the epitome of awesomeness! A lesson only Alex Farran can put together in such a way that we can all learn something regardless of our level! 🙏
As usual excellent...... Thanks for sharing .... Alex you are the best teacher for someone who has played a while but somehow has gotten stuck and feels like not coming out of their comfort zone. Guitar Vocabulary ..... Lovely .... Thank you again and again....
Excellent as always, and I especially appreciate that when you are covering more advanced stuff like this you put the lesson in a common key to take away one level of needless complexity for us mere mortals.
"Perk me up!", "Beam me up!", and jump around the house a bit! Exhilarating lesson - such a diversion from my "normal" blues pursuits and one that I want to explore more because of you. So, jumping into it - Bye Bye Birdie!
Another amazing lesson. Honestly, every part of your lessons from constructing the solo and breaking it down bit by bit are the best I've found on TH-cam. A real treasure trove of knowledge in each one. Thanks so much!
A wonderful escape from "the land of the normal" into the Kingdom of "Harmonic Awawareness is Your Friend"! Couldn't ask for a better tour guide - there is something for everyone in this lesson.
Thanks Alex! If I could only play one style this would be it! Over 40 years ago I was playing piano in a blues based band and one of our guitar players was good friends with Michael Mann AKA Hollywood Fats. He would sit in with us from time to time and completely blow my mind!! I've been addicted ever since!!
Superb! Just finished ripping off all your licks in that jump blues in E demo you did a while back. Now that's this week's practice sorted too. Cheers Alex. Can't get enough of this style 👍
Tour is a great metaphor for the extensions and harmonies embedded in the Jump Blues form. Less is more. It's what I listen for in blues guitar, as it feeds into so many other genres of playing, even re-imported into Country Blues (we conveniently forget Robert Johnson had a teacher). There's a lot to listen for here, and a lot to steal.
looking forward to this one Alex.....do like a bit of the old jump blues !!! I am sure you will give us some very tasty licks. Thanks for the work you put in mate its appreciated.
Thanks Alex, I should know now, but each time I’m surprised how dense your vids are, and so much hard work in only 20 minutes or so clip. Good job again. I’m still on autumn leaves inversions, first string set. I definitely can’t follow your pace dude 😉 Thanks again for your work 🙏
Another Five Star video, Alex! I'm a big fan of jump blues and all the great players of that era. Excellent backing track and your guitar sounds great as well. I love the live studio sound of that era in recording history, as exemplified by all those wonderful King and Federal Records made in their historic Cincinnati studio. It's like you are in the room with them. The list on Wikipedia of all those King records by so many legendary artists like Earl Bostic and Freddie King is just amazing. As far as I'm concerned, I'l take that sound over digital any day! Back in the days when the music came first, not the technology.
Thanks for the comment my friend! Really glad you enjoyed it! Man, yeah that was a legendary era for sure and I’m with you.. I adore that live room sound 👌🏻🔥
I was always asking why nobody that likes what I like makes videos. I've been looking for this for decades. I need to get back on the Patreon for those album recommendations and stuff like the Jockey full of bourbon Ribot breakdown.
Another great lesson Alex, love the style jump blues, the lesson is full of so many tasty ingredients, love just watching your performance and taking what I am able to learn, thanks a lot buddy!
Hey buddy, glad you enjoyed the lesson. I do quite a few close-up shots of fiddly bits and won't be doing any overlays or additional graphics etc. Not to state the obvious, but if you're serious about learning this then you could grab my insanely thorough and carefully typed out lesson materials at either of the links in the description ;)
love it! I was just about to guess that maybe Fender sent you one of their 70th anniversary 54 Strat custom shops I still like my real but it’s nice to see one that isn’t once in a while!
Thanks mate. Those 70th anniversary ones look nice too, but this one is a brand new 56' custom shop.. it's a beaut! 👌🏻 So, do you own an original 50's Strat then?! Amazing!
@@AlexFarranGuitar oh heavens no! I have a custom shop reissue 57 with a chunky V-neck. It’s a little too relic for me as far as a neck goes but the body looks great. It’s a like almost like gold foil paint over Sunburst heavy and I just think it looks cool as hell but that’s only 50. I have a couple 60s the 68 land out in the 63 land out, which are both awesome. I got a ton of guitars way too many all of them were bought used and I only have one real vintage guitar, which is my dark burst 65 L5 custom with a factory installed gold d’armond pup. it would be the perfect arch top guitar the next a little thin but once I play it for a few minutes, I get over that, but I really don’t pull it out much arch tops kinda give me a backache from reaching over the top of them.
I cant believe I just found your channel. Its fantastic. So many great lessons. I thought I had found all the good teachers. Thanks so much for your great lessons. I love the simple rhythm played in the Marc Ribot/ Tom Waits lesson form a year ago. Moving to the 6th then 5th chord. Simple things. Is that chord progression from a specific song of his?
Thanks for the kind words buddy, I really appreciate it! Ah yes, so that type of sequence can be found in a few Tom Waits tunes. Check out "Dead and Lovely" and "Green Grass" 👍🏻

I have a black BG on YT so I see it easier, should be a super quick fix. Great video by the way! You and Eric Haugen are my absolute favorite people on YT at the moment. Keep it up!
Does anyone know Alex's background? Where did he study guitar? He seems to know everything. Alex, I guess I should just ask you. How'd you learn to play like this? And do you do session work?
Hey buddy, thanks for the message and kind words. I do indeed do session work, and I’ve been playing since I was 8 years old.. self taught, no musical education or music school training. Learned everything by ear and got into bands at a very young age. That, coupled with a bit of an obsessive mind and a big passion for music has gotten me to where I am playing wise. Thanks for the comment 🙏🏻

Does your CS Fender Strat have a 7.25 radius neck, and if so, do you need to remove it to adjust the truss rod?
