Just got the maxed out 14s AMD with 64gb ram. Was a great deal at 50% off. Great video of the big brother version!
Great review! Looks like an amazing laptop, my only concern is the OLED screen... should I be worried about burn-in and what steps should I take to prevent it? Thanks
Thanks for the great video! I have two questions though. 1) Any concerns about OLED burn-in on this model? 2) Would this be a good laptop for Photoshop? (I know it can *run* Photoshop obviously, but I hear an increasing number of plugins and Neural Filters require discrete video. Can the AMD 780M handle them? This is still a relatively new chipset and I can't find much info on this yet.) There's a doorbuster sale on the 32GB and 64GB OLED models, so I am tempted.
Thank you for this video, I purchased this laptop too a few weeks ago, and so far there are many things that I love about it - amazing display, great keyboard and very light for its size!
One thing I don't like at the moment is that the fan keeps turning on and off every 10-30 seconds, even when I'm doing basic tasks (web browsing and emails). Have you experienced this as well?
This laptop is awesome but I wish they had a variant with the HS ryzen processors instead of the U, it would make it more appealing to me for future proofing.
As a ThinkPad veteran since the IBM days, I use the trackpoint stick + buttons (with middle right finger, not index finger!) more than the trackpad. No need to take hands off keyboard and much more precise and faster than sliding a finger on the touchpad. Once you get the hang of it you'll never want anything else.
I maxed this one out with 64gb RAM and have had it for a month since March in Australia - it was on special too. Ended up saving quite a bit on my model. Love it - I play RTS games and do light MMO gaming on it WoW/Lord of the Rings Online etc etc on it.
It’s superb
Thnx for the video! Any thoughts on the T16 G3? It has the heat outlet on the back instead of on the side. This videa makes me doubt again to opt for this amd.
For me, all past and current ThinkPad models in the T16, T15, etc. series died instantly with the announcement (25.02.2024) of the T16 Gen 3, where they finally updated the layout of some of the keys, which for many years was crucial for many people.
And the RAM is upgradable again!
Could you run some "AI" tests on this? Would be a snap to set up with Jan or LM Studio. Mixtral 7B is the best test. Thanks!
Thanks for great review!! Have you had sleep/wake issues? Have you tried running linux on it?
I haven’t had sleep issues no
Thanks for putting out the review! Been waiting on this one for a while. Having said that, I wanted to ask that for the same build config and almost the same price, would you recommend this over the T16? Main difference between the two seems to be the power draw, with T16 topping out at 32w, while P16s at 50w.
Realistically they will perform somewhat similarly. The old lead screen however for me is a massive selling feature. It also seems that the P series get better discounts than the t series, despising extremely close in terms of design. For me if you can get an OLED on both of them, just get whatever is cheaper
@@TechGuyBeau I can get either with an OLED panel. Though, it's the other way around here in my region. T-series is relatively cheaper than P. I can get the T16 with the OLED panel 120$ cheaper than the P16s. I'm just a bit worried how T16's performance will hold up in the long term, given it's power draw is significantly capped.
@@barleygraperagWhere i am, T-series is $140 cheaper than P too. @TechGuyBeau is the cooling (like the heat pipes) on the P16s better than t16 or is it the same? I'm attracted to the p16s cos of the option to go 64gb ram. was afraid that the higher power draw would result in higher temps on the p16s, your review gives me more confidence in picking p16s over t16 :)
@@staticoverplastic7456 Both T16 and P16s have dual heat pipes for the AMD variant. T16's Intel variant on the other hand comes with a single heat pipe.
Tkank You for nice review Mate
This one easily…
If the 16 is too big however, the p14s/t14 OLED are also superb (videos on both). Intel p14s has an nvidia a500, the AMD doesn’t need it due to the 780m graphics. Both great.
But you can’t beat a huge 16” OLED
If portability is king, then the z13 or nano are also quite nice. The z13 has a superb build quality and OLED screen but it’s pricy
Thanks Beau! Btw, I heard a LOT of things about the Qualcomm wifi. Does it have issues, and more importantly, on a laptop that supports linux, does it have issues there? I read about issues with that on linux which is important for a laptop like this. Thanks again! Edit: is wifi soldered?
I can provide some feedback here, it's the same Qualcomm WiFi on the P14s Gen 4. It is soldered and it works perfectly fine on Windows.
Unfortunately it does have some issues on Linux, there is a regression on recent kernels (for a few months now) where WiFi would get crippled after suspend. There are some workarounds like disabling WiFi powersave and reloading the kernel module.
Afaik a fix is underway and we've been sending diag logs to Lenovo. They're passing them along to qualcomm.
TL:DR; it's a good wifi card, but there are some teething issues on Linux that you'll need to live with until a firmware fix is issued.
@@helali_s thanks a lot! How long have these issues been going on, on Linux? And does it differ per distro base? Ubuntu, Fedora, etc?
btw have you seen the concept lenovo laptop with clear display?
So I take it you prefer this one over the Alienware M16 R2 you recently reviewed. Could you talk a little about the pros/cons of each and why this one is your daily driver?
They're completely different laptops with different audiences. This 4k screen is for professionals who need accurate colors or look at multiple small things on a screen and need them all crisp, such as photographers on the go. The Alienware is gaming oriented, with powerful cooling and dedicated graphics and suit people using them, such as gamers and video editors on the go
Pretty much nailed it with the comment. This AMD machine can absolutely game in AAA modern games, but you’re going to be very limited towards 1200 P, and lower settings in the most demanding stuff. That being said whatever you do on 4K lead screen is going to be absolutely gorgeous. Laptop also has significantly better battery life, is lighter, and runs much cooler. The CPU performance between the two is actually closer than you would think, however graphical performance is vast
The M-16 is going to blow the ThinkPad out of the water in terms of gaming, but if you’re looking for more of a creator, student, or professional focus laptop the ThinkPad is the way to go. Since it can still do light game. The M-16 is more of a Gaming laptop that is light and thin enough to also appeal towards hybrid users.
If you were looking for something that is pretty much right in the middle of these two, the flow X 16, and the Lenovo pro/yoga 9i are going to be true hybrid devices, with beautiful creator level screens, relatively thin, but also decent gaming performance. The downside is they are fairly expensive
So really you have pads like this that are on the creator side, but still game. Then you have hybrid devices like the X 16, or 9i, and then you have gamer devices that are relatively portable like the Alienware M-16. After that you’re getting into heavy gaming laptops that don’t really appeal towards the portable crowd
Thanks for this review. I was interested to see how you removed the bottom cover. A couple months ago I purchased (and returned) a P16v because the bottom cover was ridiculously difficult to remove. After removing and replacing the bottom cover on the P16v, the video no longer worked correctly. I wonder if prying the cover open from the rear edge was the trick I needed to know? The bottom cover design on the P16v is a bit different that the P16s. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on P16v vs P16s.
A bit offtopic, sorry. I've been using a Legion Slim 7 7840HS 4060 3.2K display in Glacier White for a week. Basically hobby games, browsing and work (IT engineer). I had problems with the scaling of win11 desktop and app quality and a little with the games, that I can play in native +dlss or 1600P with quality degradation. I only have a few days until I can return it, is it worth paying a little extra to exchange it for a Legion 5 Pro 7745 and 4070 with 2560@240hz? Or I'll be there then, like now, it's enough to take the resolution back. 5 pro would be 10% more expensive. I like everything about Slim 7, only the resolution is very high. Thank you
The laptop you are using also comes with 1600 P screen option. So you have a few way
If you keep the 3.2 K screen, which is my personal preference, you can use quite a bit more DSS. Remember if you have a finer resolution you’re scaling up to, you can use more DSS and have it still look good. Performance DSS will look fantastic on 3.2 K, and might not look as good at 1600
If you want to use non-native resolutions and do manual down scaling, you need to divide your pixels evenly. 1600 P does not divide properly into 2000. Which is your resolution. You need to take your resolution and divided by half. So in native downscale would be 1600 x 1000. If you play at this resolution you will not need DSS, and realistically it should look fine
You’ll notice in this video you are commenting on that this is a 4K screen, and I played at a resolution that was exactly 1/2 pixel height. So there’s no blurring.
Personally I would definitely keep this seven slim over any of the pro laptops. It is significantly more premium. If you have a hard time dealing with the high resolution 3.2 K screen consider just getting the 1600 P variant of the same laptop
@TechGuyBeau Thank you for your time. The slim 7 is the best laptop I've ever owned, but unfortunately it's only sold with this screen in the region. :(
DLSS is a solution in supported games, but where not, the ideal half resolution is quite small for a 16" screen.
There are many things against 5 pro, hx series cpu, plastic, speakers, etc.
Pro: the display and the 4070
It's a tough decision
Thanks again for your help
I just recently bought the Lenovo ThinkPad T16 - AMD. I paid $1200 CDN. That P16s looks nice, but out of my $ reach.
Its same
Yeah T16 is the exact same inside and out, but the P16s has different GPU and RAM options
Hey! I’ve been stuck between deciding to buy the E16 AMD Ryzen 7 version or i5 version. Could you please suggest what would be a good purchase considering I don’t want to change laptops often and I’m planning to study computer science (probably AI )? Thanks you very much.
Realistically they will perform very similarly. AMD will have much better battery life, and integrated graphics. Whichever one you buy I would seriously try to get the 1600 P screen.
@@TechGuyBeau thank you for your prompt response 🙏🏻
A bit late, but for anyone else, the 7840hs has a better GPU than the 7640hs. If you are leveraging the GPU, keep that in mind.
Do you try to connect an eGPU in the USB-C 4.0 port?. I ask why USB-C with Thunderbold 4 is only for Intel models. In the user guide, AMD models have only one USB-C 4 with power connector and one USB-C 3.2 (Gen 2)
It would work fine. USB4 40gbit will match TB4. Both work with an eGPU
What do you think about the intel model? Also, it seems a bit loud when gaming
The microphone exaggerates the noise. It runs VERY quiet when gaming, barely audible.
I haven’t tested the Intel p16. But AMD vs intel p14 I have, and I preferred AMD
The P14s has had a ton of reports of being loud this generation, but I haven't heard the same with the 16" version.
So does the text look crisp / sharp on these OLEDs? I read about different subpixel system and I look at a lot of text as a software dev.. Is it suitable?
i have the exact same question for the exact same reason, how would for example Visual Studio text look on an OLED panel
@@q1337 lets hope Beau can answer this
In general, the higher the res, the less you have to worry about it anyway.
@@2hb3ty9gp5x While true, from the phones I used, stuff like subpixel composition makes all the difference in color and readability. That's why the question still stands. I'm not sure if it was Super AMOLED vs AMOLED that was a huge difference, Supers "correct" subpixels made everything harder to read and whites blindingly powerful. I'm just curious about how laptop screens adapted to this because it's hard to tell unless you look at it in person.
With the 4k screen, you don't need to worry about subpixels.
Can you please help us verify whether we can use the cellular slot to add additional SSD? and if so what are our options and from where we can buy them ?
no the WWAN slot is not whitelisted for nvme ssds
gen2?
Which would you recommend over? ThinkPad P16s vs ThinkBook 16p
Very different laptops.
Thinkpad p16s
+ incredible 4K OLED
+ very light
+ superb superb battery life
+ powerful iGPU
+ very fast memory
- no dedicated graphics
- single nvme
Thinkbook 16p
+3.2k screen is about the best ips I’ve used
+ all metal
+ superb speakers
+ powerhouse performance
+ rtx 4060
+ dual nvme, dual ram
- meh battery
- heavy
- Not an OLED
If you will not be gaming at all and need portability and battery life. The p16s is a clear winner. If you might be gaming or simply want an all metal chassis with incredible audio. Thinkbook.
@@TechGuyBeau appreciate your detailed and helpful reply. I have shortlisted one 😊
Is the 65w charger enough when its under Max load?
Others reviews say it consumes 68 at max load. You can have it shipped with a higher wattage power supply if you use the configurator.
would anyone recommend this laptop for music production? I use FL Studio, I own a Dell Inspiron a gaming laptop, well a really old one I got this in 2018. The CPU is terrible it s an i7 7th gen. When I make music on it the CPU spikes to 100% of it s usage stuttering the DAW (FL). If anyone can help please reply or give me any other recommendations.
Yes, it’s good.
Mate,Does 4k OLED with maximum brigtness 400nits hurt your eyes?
No. It all the lights are off or something s pure white canvas can be bright. Otherwise it actually helps my eyes having a crisp screen and good colours
Mate, between 16' Oled 4k in T16 and 16' 3.2k mini LED in Yoga pro9i, which one is superior? I am confused.@@TechGuyBeau
This laptop can use solidworks and Autocad?
For sure
That's what the autocad site says when you check if it's rated for it. But I've seen no review mentioning a thinkpad for this purpose. I will be testing this laptop out in a few weeks for this purpose, mainly for 3d modeling in CAD as that is main concern
@@ericdavisii3912 How does it perform?
@400bc.. it's not the greatest but it will get the job done.
If it can run MS Flight Sim then I'm sold.
It cannot

It only charges with usb c
@@beau-urns oh wow. A bunch of things on Reddit say the opposite. But those threads don't mention which generation of p16 or which processor it's equipped with strangely. But the threads are relatively recent though... Anyway, thank you.
They might be thinking of the p16 non S with dedicated RTX graphics
Is it as powerful as MacBook pro M1 pro ?
it’s a fair bit more powerful
@@TechGuyBeau powerful enough for 4k prores log video editing stuff like that? I'm considering to get rid off my MacBook pro M1 pro to p14s max version

I just ordered this, but realistically speaking Apple silicon is a couple years ahead of x86 in terms of efficiency, especially the Max chips with their fast memory bandwidth. The HS version of this chip can be better than M Max chips in a few benchmarks, but this version is not truly competitive if you really care about % benchmarks, and the Apple systems will have far better battery life. However, it doesn't usually matter that much, and they are 3 - 4 × the cost, even with resale you could give this away in a year and buy a 2025 system and still come out ahead.

Bruh. 4k 60hz screen and 780m graphics = gaming? Nice joke. You need to downscale to 720*480 to run AAA games smoothly in ultra
Don’t play on ultra…. 🤔
Imagine thinking that you have to play on ultra to be considered a gaming laptop. 🤦
I just played through Baulders Gate 3 on my Steam deck at medium settings. Is the steam deck not considered a gaming device because it's 60hz and has an even less powerful GPU than the 780m?
Not a gaming laptop. But the laptop that can play any games

@@kotenkostiantyn1282 have you tried it?
It's time to buy a new laptop. in principle, I have already chosen it - this is the Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 (Gen9, 2024.). I am satisfied with everything about it, from the form factor and general appearance to the component filling. but I just can’t decide between two 14" screen options - 2880x1800 120Hz or 3840x2400 60Hz.
I don't play games and I'm not interested in them. Basically, I write all sorts of fairy tales for my grandchildren and make illustrations for them (like amateur comics), and edit short, funny home videos. otherwise the Internet, movies and downloaded music from the 70s. This is about the use case.
So the question is - does 120Hz and lower resolution or higher resolution and 60Hz make sense for me? what's the secret? What will 120Hz give me or, on the other hand, will the picture in UHD (3840x2400) on a 14" screen be significantly clearer. Such a dilemma. I looked through a bunch of reviews, but I couldn’t figure it out clearly. It’s clear that the screen frequency is trending now, about that they call from every iron. But again, manufacturers of expensive devices still offer high-resolution screens, but with a frequency of 60. How can the average person decide? The difference in price is not significant at all considering the overall price of the device, so what to choose?
I’m not a techie, but I think refresh rate will impacts more gaming. For your use case, I would think the quality of the screen/image resolution would be more important.
Just checked with ChatGPT: For home videos, the resolution of the laptop's display is more important than the refresh rate. A higher resolution display will allow you to see your videos in greater detail, which can be crucial for editing and reviewing footage. Refresh rate, on the other hand, primarily impacts the smoothness of motion in games and videos, which may not be as critical for home video editing.
@@tomphilpott3659 Thank you for your response. I think that these opinions coincide with us.
The 120 Hz screen will give you smoother scrolling and it will make the computer feel faster. The vast majority of people won't see a difference between the pixel density of those two screens at 14" unless they're very close to the screen. I have 20/10 vision and find 17" 4k crisp at laptop distances. The big advantage to 4k for me is being about to put 4 1080p windows on the screen at once, but most people would find the text too small to read when doing that. A 4k screen also scales better if you want to game at 1080p or watch 1080p content. Most people would appreciate the 120 Hz more, I think.
