Glad you were able to expand your fleet! Anyways, I really enjoy your train show tours because usually hypes me up for them! I’ve got one coming up the weekend after next, so wish me luck finding some good deals/good finds! Thanks again for the video!
Hey SMT it always makes me happy when I see you have posted a new video. I saw a couple of really nice brass steam locomotives at a yard sale once. And after that seeing your videos on fixing vintage locomotives got me into the hobby. Today right after getting off work I actually went to buy a life like Rail Master from someone on offer up for $25. I am really happy with my purchase because everything was in the box and it was almost brand new. I also recently purchased an unopened yard boss on offer up as well. So I just wanted to hop on the comments and thank you for showing us how you fix your trains. I Hope you're having an awesome day
In 2018 I had about $100 to my name and desperately wanted to add an extension to my layout and managed to build the whole thing for about $50. I feel like it's gotta be possible to do it again and show others along the way.
I have a lifelike F40ph in the Amtrak phase 2 scheme. I have owned it since I was little and its been a good runner. When I got back into the hobby less than 2 years ago, I polished it up and it runs even better. I did make a review vid on it.
A fun suggestion for the Athearn Soo Line locomotive: upgrade it with Athearn's Genesis motor (ATHG63842), which I believe is a 5-pole motor. That F45 has a lot of room for ballast and combined with a strong motor, you could have a budget DCC-ready unit that could out-haul a modern Athearn loco for about 1/2 to 2/3 the cost!
That Soo engine is very cool but it is the strangest looking GP38-2 I’ve ever seen. lol. It also must be having an identity crisis because it is a EMD riding on GE trucks. Great video. I always enjoy seeing what’s next on the channel.
I've always liked the NJ transit paint scheme but this is the first time I've found one of their locomotives at a decent price. I'm guessing by your profile picture you've seen a few in person?
Oh man that old CalTrain F40 sure brings back memories, double so since I grew up roughly 3-4 blocks from the tracks (yeah I heard them a lot), but I remember my dad taking me on a trip when they first started service. I want to say that is the original paint scheme they started with too.
I was about say he should have picked up honestly as they are pretty rare and hard to find nowadays, I’ve been too 4 train shows in the Bay Area and never seen a lifelike one but a brass model for 300$
NYC here I love NJ Transit since I also lived in Jersey City, Newark and Hoboken for a number of years. To find reasonably priced HO stock is a GOD send.
Find some gallery cars for the Metra engine. As for the North Train, it has the paint schemes for the Metra F40C locomotives that ran the Milwaukee North line.
Man seeing those old F40ph's are a staple from my childhood. Fun fact one of my nearby cities here in Illinois still has a F40ph running under Metra and can say for an old timer they can stand a test to time and still be reliable
I like the aviation one a lot! That's sooo cool!! I love that California transportation F40ph, it looks like it is for Amtrak California (i have seen a NPCU like that loco before, it was nearly identical). If you don't want/ need it, I would take it, FYI i have 2 powered locomotives in my colection. Great video SMT!! You are my favorite TH-camr and the best one out there!! F.Y.I in the aviation setup, there is a Concorde aka the only supersonic jet to be used until 2003( there were supposed to be three, the Tupolev Tu-144 also known as the concordeski, and the Boeing 2707, which was supposed to seat 300 or more passengers, but was cancelled, and the Tupolev Tu-144 had 2 fatal crashes, eventually being scrapped).
Got some nice pickups there Harrison! I used to have a couple of Life-Like F40PHs, one in Burlington Northern and the other in Amtrak. Sadly, neither survived my childhood, to bad, they were great looking locomotives!
Thanks, Harrison, for bringing us along. Great top-up on the F40"s. Some I've never seen either. I'm looking forward to powering the Athearn Soo Line piece. As far as the brass track. My Roman Coliseum of trains is about 1/2 brass😅
Nice finds! I do quite like the life like f40’s, and with being close to the line my whole life, I need to get myself one of those Caltrain life like engines at some point. I’ve tried several times but just haven’t been able to.
Personally, I am a fan of Lifelike. I have 2 locomotives from the brand and they were from my father's old collection. They have always run with no issues other than the wheels oxidizing over time. Otherwise they have always been great!
I have one of those Life Like F40PHs. Mine has a CN "Sargent stripes" paint scheme". Mine has since grenaded its gear box and stopped working long ago. But I kept it a harvested it for its weight, wires and even pick ups. I still have the shell and I intend to some how retro fit it to a more modern chassi cause I do like then way it looks. As you said they really are the greatest but we all started with them and they brought hours of fun.
The Greenberg train show used to be so much better. It comes around to the north east here in New Jersey two times a year. The one around holiday time is always a little bit better and you can get some deals, but they don’t put on the displays like they used to when I was little when the show that I used to go to was in Philadelphia.
oh maaan am looking for that Model Power Champion boxcar! I have the Life-Like version too! the farm one is a Tyco & that same building has been used for Ma's Place & Speedy Andrew's Repair Shop well Life-Like is like 2nd worst next to Tyco locos from the 70s to 1993
whats funny is just as this video came out, i recived a load of o-gauge marx, lionel and some s gauge ac gilbert stuff too! great video harrison! keep it up
@SMTMainline Harrison, I am right there with you on the LifeLike thing! ModelPower too! They were my favorite brands BITD because they were not expensive, they were of solid quality & detail, they looked good and ran well. Granted, I'm an NScale guy but they were a good choice regardless of the scale.
Harrison I just had a train show in Columbia, SC and got a go haul of trains for less than twenty dollars. I was carrying a box of parts and two bags of books and six rolling stock cars.
Great video, as usual. Shows are great for getting budget stuff and a bad day at a train show is better than a good day at work. LifeLike F40’s hold a special place in my heart, as the first loco I bought at age 14 to replace a burned out Tyco F7 I got for my first train set was a BN green F40. And then you unbox that SOO FP45 that turns out to be an Athearn, which was icing on the cake for this, as I still own an Athearn Milwaukee Road Passenger FP45 that was my third locomotive. I’ve been wanting to post a budget layout build on FB for years, using train show bought parts, but life seems to get in the way, so I am looking forward to seeing your build.
Those life like a F40s are fun especially when they use a road name that never owned any F40s. I have a Union Pacific one which oddly has nickel silver wheels on it.
SMT - Regarding the cattle stockyard building, the gray tower had a windmill assembly on it that was the type typically used on farms and ranches to pump water.
My first oval of power loc track worked well. The stuff that came with my walthers set was okay but some of the pieces seemed warped which caused some issues.
You can never have enough track, brass track is just as good as Nickel silver, if you are smart enough to clean your track! Or not have your layout in moisture, Same with steel. Moisture will also break down your scenery especially wood, glue and lychen.
Highly recommend to anyone who loves trains shows to check out ashville ag center! Their trains shows are amazing and so are the people! I’ve found lots of great deals and amazing trains there! The layouts unfortunately have drastically declined since Covid but still love going to it either way! also the Hendersonville train club is not to far from it and they have an amazing display that I highly recommend visiting 10/10!
I understand they weren't the highest quality but they were affordable which was important for families. I feel like they get a lot more flack then they deserve considering they seem to be more reliable than the Bachmann Kadar and Tyco Power torque motors.
@SMTMainline absolutely. The hobby needs locomotives that can be purchased for 45 $ its not rocket science. You can buy a cell phone for less than a 100$ . Model Trains for a child open up a world of imagination. We need more of that.
Funny enough i was also at a train show last week and i ended up buying 2 märklin american freight cars sets, one contained 2 boxcars and the other contained 1 boxcar and 1 gondola, so now i have 2 tankers, 1 gondola and 6 boxcars

I've got a couple of the "Sargent stripes" myself. One busted a gear like yours so its two wheel drive now but so far its holding.
Gd to be back w/you! Great buys fr train show!🎉❤
Your the best
The Greenberg train show used to be so much better. It comes around to the north east here in New Jersey two times a year. The one around holiday time is always a little bit better and you can get some deals, but they don’t put on the displays like they used to when I was little when the show that I used to go to was in Philadelphia.
At one point I wanted to collect every Life-Like F40, but I kept finding new versions
They seem to have quite a few variants. I wouldn't be surprised if their were even some Australian models.
I like lifelike engines too
Thanks SMT for the Go Transit engine.
oh maaan am looking for that Model Power Champion boxcar!
I have the Life-Like version too!
the farm one is a Tyco & that same building has been used for Ma's Place & Speedy Andrew's Repair Shop
well Life-Like is like 2nd worst next to Tyco locos from the 70s to 1993
8:35 NJ TRANSIT my New Jersey train. From Hoboken to Lyndhurst. Those were the locomotive trains I remember.
That Metra engine is pretty nice Metra engines run out of Chicago and maybe next year will end in Rockford🤞
I love train shows you have a great selection and good deals.
For sure, I wish there were more of them.
@@SMTMainline Unfortunately the shows of all types are slowly dying out. Go to as many as you can now.
That’s what I call a show
whats funny is just as this video came out, i recived a load of o-gauge marx, lionel and some s gauge ac gilbert stuff too! great video harrison! keep it up
I didn't expect to see Puma, Jagd. Panther, Jagd.pz. 4 and a panther hull here, great video
@SMTMainline
Harrison, I am right there with you on the LifeLike thing! ModelPower too! They were my favorite brands BITD because they were not expensive, they were of solid quality & detail, they looked good and ran well. Granted, I'm an NScale guy but they were a good choice regardless of the scale.
Model power made some great stuff. Some of their other products were rebadged Roco locomotives which were also solid.
3:54
you certainly were correct about aircraft enthusiasts potentially watching this!
I knew there were some in the community!
Thank you so much for the comment!
Love your videos! Keep up the good work!
Thanks
Likes trains AND Erinrude/Johnson outboards! Awesome combo! We have 4 dfferent Evinrude outboards. Awesome motors.
I'm a big fan of OMC products. Which kinds do you have? I have 1 1971 4.5 Evinrude, a 1988 90 Johnson, a 1990 90 Johnson and a 1985 Johnson 140.
The old Lifelike diesels were better than the last generation, I would have scooped up those yellow box commuter locos, just like you did.
6:17 The two toonies and a loonie town. I'd feel right at home.
Haha
The "Tyco Tweedy Bird' is the motor squealing due to lack of motor bearing lubrication
CalTrain! San Fran to San Jose/Gilroy (commuter). Oldest continually running train west of the Mississippi!
Those life like a F40s are fun especially when they use a road name that never owned any F40s. I have a Union Pacific one which oddly has nickel silver wheels on it.
The CN units were fictional as well but I still like them.
I NEED THAT LIFE LIKE METRA LOCOMOTIVE
I USED TO LIVE IN DOWNERS GROVE
SMT - Regarding the cattle stockyard building, the gray tower had a windmill assembly on it that was the type typically used on farms and ranches to pump water.
I worked at a farm years ago. The one where I was had something similar but it pumped air instead to prevent stagnation in the pond.
True nostailga
Dollar general high end
Nothing but the best.
I have the same new jersey transit f40
That one abandoned building is the old Tyco mine kit .there should had been some trestle's it sits up on.
I'll have to check the box again to make sure I didn't miss it.
When I Started Back into Model Railroading Lifelike Powerloc Was The Call And Haven’t had Any Problems yet.
My first oval of power loc track worked well. The stuff that came with my walthers set was okay but some of the pieces seemed warped which caused some issues.
Once I Started Modeling with Lifelike Tracks it Won’t be Easy to Replace and I Won’t Change it for Anything.
You can never have enough track, brass track is just as good as Nickel silver, if you are smart enough to clean your track! Or not have your layout in moisture, Same with steel. Moisture will also break down your scenery especially wood, glue and lychen.
Well done sir
Cool new toys 👍🏻
Highly recommend to anyone who loves trains shows to check out ashville ag center! Their trains shows are amazing and so are the people! I’ve found lots of great deals and amazing trains there! The layouts unfortunately have drastically declined since Covid but still love going to it either way! also the Hendersonville train club is not to far from it and they have an amazing display that I highly recommend visiting 10/10!
Bag606 - What state are Ashville and Hendersonville in?
It sounds like Ashville and Hendersonville are both in North Carolina!
@@Petemonster62 yes they are and actully pretty close to each other
I am very optimistic that I am able to get this junked train running, considering its starting condition.
Great video just goes to show anyone that talks down about those old life likes , a safe bet would be that it will start.
The Athearn dummy has two of the same trucks on it, it will short the system if you just install axles and a motor.
Peter agrees with me that you should come on down and join our club as well as fix a few locomotives! You know who I'm talking about...
My main man Peter Waco? If I'm ever in California I'd be happy to.
@@SMTMainline That's the man.
Great video thanks
Ok so I am a railfan of Caltrain, and I am looking for a “heritage” Caltrain unit the one that u have!!! Super jealous and want one bad
Converting dummy unit into a powered one series maybe ? I will make sure to watch it once you upload it ( i don't think i can watch it if yet if you upload it this week cus for this week i have to take my final exam before graduating from high school , but i will make sure to watch it once you upload it )
It probably won't be a for a while, best of luck on that exam!
F40ph's are rare and only about 475-500 is what I know.
It is 1:58 am for me right now
