Going to a Train Show, Looking for Locomotives - What Will We Find?

- Usually towards the end of September there is a train show held at the local hockey arena in Massena New York. This year's show didn't have quite as many venders as the last one but there was still plenty of great displays and I even met some subscribers of the channel.
I overall had a great time and found a few interesting locomotives which I ended up purchasing. One of which was a 2-6-6-2 Logger a "new old stock" Mantua steam engine which was made in 1993 and had never been run. The other was a Bachmann 4-4-0 "American" type steam locomotive and finally a complete Union Pacific train from Kato.

If you want a 4-4-0, I would recommend getting one of the new-tooled Bachmann ones. The one you have is actually an older model, as the new one is loco drive, and runs much smoother and is far more reliable. They aren’t cheap, but I’d say it’s one of Bachmann’s better models from recent years.
Nothing against older models though, just Bachmann used to have terrible build quality…

@@modelrailfan37 I swear I've seen one but it is like a bigger size but I mean if you can fit a motor in like a switcher or a trolly or even tiny rc cars. I don't see why you couldn't put a motor in the engine 😂
@@crazygamer0518 huh, didn’t know about that version. I know saying you couldn’t fit a motor inside the engine sounds silly (and I could be completely wrong on this, with technology these days you might be able to fit a motor in the locomotive), but the boiler is very narrow meaning that there really isn’t much space for one. This is why the HO version was tender driven for so many years, as for a while it was not possible to fit a motor into the narrow boiler. I have a feeling that the same problem might still be the case in N Scale, but you never know, so fingers crossed it is possible, and hopefully someone will make a proper version one day!
KATO is like the Toyota of model trains. Not the flashiest, but reliable and dependable. They just work.
That about sums it up. Toyota and Kato are both Japanese brands so I guess it makes sense
Lol that’s true! Athearn Bluebox locos are the same in that regard too, but then again it’s even more of a funny coincidence with Kato, since both them and Toyota are very well known in Canada and The U.S, even though they originate from the other side of the ocean! Japan is so advanced with technology and transportation, and both companies really show that (okay, I guess one only does in miniature)!

I liked Lorenzo's details on the tornado, i love how many details and little easter eggs train people put in their layouts and the work they do in general. I've never had a model train and i've never even held one but i love everything about that hobby, everyone seems to really friendly.
Brilliant take on the “to run or not to run” dilemma, I know a guy at my local model railway club who owns several models in the region of 50 to 70 years old which have never been run, and he’s slowly getting through the process of getting them all running, I actually managed to get a job fixing models for him after he bought a never before used Airfix Royal Scot to the club, ran, but noisily because it hadn’t been oiled, told him how to get into it to oil all the gears and now he trusts me with fixing his collection!

I've seen pictures of that Mantua logging tank engine on the back of a few old Mantua Classics boxes I have, so it's super exciting to actually see someone run it for the first time. Also, I'd LOVE to see more work on the N scale layout.

If you see that the last axle of the Mantua is really attacked by zinc plague, remove the axle and coat the affected wheel part with phosphoric acid (common rust converter for cars). After half an hour, washing it thoroughly and repainting the wheelset stops the decomposition.

Class 105 (Locobase 4066)
Data from [], supplemented by DeGolyer, Vol 80, pp. 216+ and 228+. See Locobase 3643 for a discussion of the split-saddle tank design. Works numbers were 60784-60785 in April 1929 and 61355 in May 1930.
Two Prairie Mallet split-saddle tanks based on the compound tank delivered a year earlier (Locobase 3643), but with four HP cylinders, each receiving steam through an 8" (203 mm) piston valve arranged for 70% maximum cut off.. They were followed immediately by a similar engine with a larger boiler and grate (Locobase 4041), then a year later by a repeat of the design shown here, but with slightly higher adhesion and engine weights.
All were expected to handle 4% grades, 40-degree curves, and 60 lb/yard (30 kg/metre) rail.
All three operated for Weyerhaeuser until the 1950s, after which they were scrapped.
Class 110/1 (Locobase 3643)
Data from Jon Davis's [], supplemented by DeGolyer, Volume 80, pp. 334+. (Thanks to Chris Hohl for his 27 July 2015 email highlighting data from the DeGolyer specs that Locobase had overlooked.) Works number was 60561 in July 1928.
A Prairie Mallet "semi-saddle"(or split) tank, this engine worked logging lines for years, later joined by a slightly larger, younger sister, for which see Locobase 4054. Like the other Baldwin Mallet tanks, this compound used 8" (203 mm) piston valves on the HP cylinders, 12" (305 mm) on the LPs.
Davis shows that this Prairie Mallet Tank operated for Weyerhaeuser from 1928 to 1954 first from Longview, Wash., then from 1937 out of Vail, Wash. Rayonier, Inc of Railroad Camp, Wash., then ran the locomotive as a tender engine until 1968. After years of storage, enthusiasts at the Black Hills Central began restoring 110 in 1999. Its first revenue run came on 12 May 2001.
[] has an extended article on the 110's history. Created specifically to serve logging roads, the split-saddle tank Mallet handled the rough track and steep (4-8%) grades as well as a Shay, but was easier to maintain. And so flexible was the layout that 40-deg curves [146 foot/44.5 kg/metre radii] were well within the engine's turning radius. The Baldwin logging engines were a big hit with their crews because they were "clean" engines (oil-fired and superheated), unlike the older engines that threw water, soot and "other gunk" out of the stack.
Class 110/2 (Locobase 4064)
Source of information is an account by William Schneider for the PSMRA presented by the SDRM's website. See also [] . See also DeGolyer, Volume 80, pp. 340+ and 348+. See Locobase 3643 for a discussion of the split-saddle tank design. (Thanks to Scott Golding for his 13 November 2020 detailing of the tenders Rayonier added to these tank engines.) Works numbers were 62064-62065, 62068 in 1937 (62064 in June).
These unusual locomotives worked the Washington State forest logging lines for years until 1967. As built the Prairie Mallet articulated design featured split saddletanks on the boiler (one over each engine unit), which shortened the engine's wheelbase. The specifications describe the engines as "in general to be duplicates as Clemons Logging Company's Locomotive No 8, Baldwin class 16 30/50 1/4 DD 6 [Locobase 4052], except where otherwise specified and to embody modern Mallet construction."
Eight-inch (203 mm) piston valves admitted steam to the HP cylinders, 12" (305 mm) piston valves served the LPs.
Scott Golding's remarks about the Rayonier tenders are here quoted in full:
"Just a note that Rayonier added tenders to two of these while in our ownership. We didn't remove the saddle tanks, obviously, but wanted additional range on them, so we added tenders from other locomotives that we were scrapping.
C/N 62064, our number 111, got a tender in 1960, from our #18, a 1901 Ten-wheeler, c/n 18734, which we had recently scrapped.
C/N 60561, our number 110, got a tender in 1962, from our #101, a 1912 Mikado, c/n 38966, which we had scrapped in 1959.
We kept the tenders for use as fire cars (forest fire suppression), but at some point decided that we wanted our tank mallets to have better range, and had the tenders sitting around, so we pressed them back into service. Best I can tell, both lokeys kept their tenders when we sold them, though I don't see that the one at Black Hills still has / uses that one. "
After stints with Weyerhaeuser (1937-1946) and Rayonier (1946-1967), Georgia-Pacific bought #110 for the California Western. The CW converted it to a tender engine, removing the distinctive tanks and fuel bunkers in the process. In 1984, runs on the Super Skunk tourist service came to end and CW #40 was donated to the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association, later passing on to the San Diego Railroad Museum.
Weyerhaueser converted the 9 to a 2-6-6-2T plus separate tender and renumbered it 8.
Class 111 (Locobase 4041)
Data from [], supplemented by DeGolyer, Vol 80, pp. 222+ . See Locobase 3643 for a discussion of the split-saddle tank design. (Thanks to Chris Hohl for his 9 May 2015 email catching a ridiculously low adhesion weight because of a dropped zero in the entry.) Works number was 60811 in May 1929.
Weyerhaeuser clearly was sampling different variations of simple and compound-expansion split-saddle-tank articulated locomotives. Baldwin had produced two simple-expansion engines the previous month with boilers that would also appear in two different Mallet-compound tank variants. The 111 was bigger and had an all-simple expansion cylinder setup with each cylinder taking steam through 8" (203 mm) piston valves that were set for a 70% maximum cutoff.
Jon Davis of loggingmallets notes that this burly little split saddle tank ran for Weyerhaeuser until 1947 at three different locations. It then travelled north to Vancouver Island, BC, for Canadian Forest Products, where it operated until 1962. It was then scrapped.
Class 4 (Locobase 3166)
Data from [] and DeGolyer, Volume 80, pp. 356+. See also "LoggerHogger", a member of a TrainOrders.com forum who posted "Sierra #38 & Rayonier #120 - Weyerhaeuser's Twins!" on 9 January 2009 at 0700 ([],1844966, last accessed 2 July 2012). Works numbers were 61781 in September 1934 and 61904 in 1936.
Baldwin's specification book Volume 80 describes #4 beginning on page 356 and #120 on page 364.
Clearly, Weyerhaeuser wanted to put as much adhesive weight on 66 1/2 lb/yard (33.25 kg/metre) rail as it could manage. These behemoths didn't delve deeply into the timberlands, instead negotiating curves of a relatively modest 18 degrees (320 foot/97.5 metre radii) and grades that maxed out at 2%. Their HP cylinders took steam through 10" (254 mm) piston valves while the LP cylinders used 12" (305 mm) piston valves.
120, which was ordered a little later (order 16 36/56 1/4 DD 54) is described in the specs as a "duplicate of 16 36/56 1/4 DD 53 except where otherwise specified."
LoggerHogger explains that though both engines were indeed sister engines in WT, they did not work on the same line until the mid-1950s. 4 went to work on the West Side line running out of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Her massive bulk and size didn't suit the track and she suffered several derailments. It was only in 1952, however, that the 4 went to the Sierra Railroad as their 38. Sierra sold the 38 to Rayonier Company in August 1955 where the engine ran until 1967 when it was retired and put on display. 4 has since been moved twice, the second time to Merritt, Ore.
120's first service ran out of Vail, Wash. Later, WT's Chehalis Western used her to take logs to the Milwaukee Road junction. 120's reunion with 4 came in 1954 when Rayonier bought the former engine. Its career came to a premature end in 1962 when the crown sheet failed after the boiler's water level fell too low. Repairs would have been costly, so the engine was scrapped and the tender salvaged as a water car.
I would never spend money on an engine that I haven't seen ran, especially from a train show.kato makes a awesome product... I have many in HO scale and N scale. I work right next to their main hub in Schaumburg, Illinois. Walk-ins welcome it's open to the public.

I used to go to a lot of train shows, and an easy thing to do to sort of test DC locos to see if they run is to just take a 9 volt battery and touch the wheels to it. If it runs well on that, it should be OK. If it barely goes, make an offer, "Since it needs work". I used to get basket cases pretty cheap. Once in a while, a dead one was a really simple fix, but usually it involved some petty involved efforts to make it work. I got an old brass RS-3 that had "foam rot" on one side for $20. It ran fine and I took it to a friend's and he had a soda blaster and while it would never be perfect, it ended up looking OK in PC black.

I'm doing some kitbashing with off-scale diecast trains, including Thomas and a few toy aisle items. One such project is to use half of two road rollers to make a modern track MOW vehicle. I'm also thinking of converting a couple of trucks into HO-scale hi-rail vehicles by using some of my spare N-scale wheelsets. Takes me back to when I started in the hobby 51 years ago, combining farm toys, Airfix military sets, car kit and slot car leftovers, Matchbox, Corgi Jr, Dinky, Mantua-Tyco, etc. In lieu of trains shows I hit as many dollar store and charity shops as I could in the past couple of weeks while the weather was still summer-like. I learned right away that I need containers to hold all the parts while I start a half-dozen different projects on the fly.
Always enjoy show vids and trying to guess what you'll actually buy. I suspected the American. All steam needs a break-in and I suspect old grease. You reminded me of when I retired. I bought myself a logging heisler as a parting gift. Cheers.
Great haul and video there my friend. I have recently bought four HO scale GE Tier 4 GEVO's from Intermountain. I am looking forward to them in due course but they will be put away for Christmas once I have tested them.
Always got to love these train shows
When I was new to this hobby, I'd see model red-over-yellow Union Pacific cabooses and think, surely that McDonald's paint scheme can't be real. But sure enough, there's a UP caboose at the railroad museum in Sacramento and it looks a lot like that one.

That green and blue GE Evo loco in the opening sequence! That's my favorite loco on my layout! Yay! Being from FL I use it to pull some Tropicana box cars. The Trop plant is within five miles of my house. The locos that actually pull their freight are usually CSX, so I have one of those also.

I have one of those too, as well as the chrome-plated MTH boxcar right behind it. I ran mine many years ago on a display layout for a "First Night" New Year's Eve event in Connecticut.

The Layout at 3:18 isn't a club, but a layout owned by Jeff Filios- I know him from a railway museum where I volunteer. He invited me to help him set up his layout for the first time at Massena back in 2021. Glad to see some love for his layout, if I ever get a chance to help him exhibit again I'd love to bring some of my vintage HO collection up to run.
A friend who was at the show picked up the Cox 'Big Pine Lumber' loco at 2:55 for me, since he knew I was looking for a GP-9. I'm hoping to use it as a starting point to model Central Vermont Railway chop-nose GP9 No. 4559.
When it comes to buying anything old, I always assume the trains need work unless someone I feel I can trust is able to vouch for the train's operability. Most vendors don't have the time to test everything they sell, it's definitely a good idea for every model railroader to learn how to perform some basic level maintenance (especially when buying used/old stuff).
Just got back from the Mega Train Show in Winnipeg which was awesome, Harrison, but less extensive than what you found in Massena. Prices were comparatively better I think, for example with some used custom painted BNSF diesels selling for $120 -$150 Canadian dollars. There was an abundance of old Lionel stock -- more than I've seen in previous sales. Alas, only a single streetcar -- the ever available 'Streetcar named Desire' which is usually twinned in a box with a San Francisco cable car, as you filmed one in your video. Notwithstanding, it was a pleasure to visit, as you clearly expressed concerning the Massena train show.

That 4-4-0 was the first real Ho steam locomotive I owned at age 4.

I actually wish I made up that way. I'm glad to see what you purchased a Mantua logger loco. That is one type that I've been trying to get. I noticed you brought your girl with you and that's awesome. Like I said I wish I went up that way. I'm going to try to go to the train show in Marlborough mass which lands on my birthday in December. Last year I went to it hopefully I do this year but I also want to try to make it across the border as ive been talking about it eh. Glad you two had an awesome time.
Like with anything when I buy something no matter what somebody says whether it's New Old stock brand new never been taken out of the box or anything else I just automatically figure I'm going to have to work on it and do something to it that's always a good thing to just keep it in mind into just tell yourself that you're going to have to do something to it and even if it is brand new
Same here. Unless I know the seller, and feel confident that when they say it's ready to roll it's ready to roll, I assume I'm going to need to do something to make it run for me. I factor this into how much I'll pay for an item. Definitely an important think to warn the novice model railroader about when shopping for equipment.
I hate to say it but it may not be the locomotives that need the work. I noticed a few videos back that you have a passenger car that flickers horribly but only in a few spots. This is probably due to widely spaced pickups on opposite sides of the car. Both passenger cars flickered but one was worse. Old dirty wheels not withstanding, you may need some track TLC. That passenger car that flickers so badly is useful in diagnosing the track connectivity. Both locos stalled/struggled in the same spot. Otherwise, beautiful locos. That green lumber crawler is magnificent.
The track is fine. Those passenger cars haven't had their wheels cleaned in a while, same goes for these locomotives.
I know travel is usually a bit of a pain, but in Maryland (my home state), they have a big train show 2-3 times a year. Also, I will be going on Vacation in a few weeks and going to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga. Might do a video and have some train TH-camr's react to it.

It sucks that the Ho scale steamers didn't perform well. They are some interesting engines. Who knows? They may make a future appearance in a repair video. As far as, the N scale Kato set is a solid runner, and it's nice to see that it performed flawlessly out of the box.

So apparently there's a socal group called the baz boys, a z gauge group that does modular displays and in a video some one took years ago one of the guys made a tornado scene as well. I think you can find it in the video where it's a challenger steam locomotive going around the whole display.
You made a very good choice by buying the 4-4-0. I got the same one from a model train specialist store, and it’s one of the best working engines on my layout. *quite unfortunately, the store closed earlier this year, so now I need to rely on the unpredictable hobby shop.

For a good running 4-4-0, try the older AHMs made by Rivarossi. I have all 3. The Inyo, the Reno and the Genoa.
The new Bachmann ones with the motor in the locomotive is pretty good too! Can’t beat the old Rivarossi one though for value though!
Both steam locomotives stopped at the same point on the layout. I would clean/ inspect the track at that point

BTW I've always heard Kato pronounced Kay-toe like Green Hornet's butt kicking partner ( yes I'm old).

I don't understand why HO scale steam doesn't have all-wheel tender pick ups like N scale does. That green loco looks a lot like the narrow gauge Unitah Railroad tank locos. It's hard to go wrong with Kato in N scale, they make some of the best stuff out there.
It's tank engine = no tender. Stanard gauge vs Uintah narrow gauge
The Black Hills Central runs a standard gauge version but with saddle tanks instead of side tanks.
I actually was just at a train show today and I don’t know if you noticed this but i noticed that the prices in just rolling stock and passenger cars has increased so much I was seeing cars for $50

Smt, if you want a better n-scale set up I suggest ttrak modules, they are all standardized so you could even set up with clubs at train shows

wow that 1st generation version 4-4-0 American/General looks great! That logging steam engine looks great too. Is that a 2-6-6-2T version with its water tank on the boiler? Good find on the N-Scale trains.
I have a Baltimore in Ohio Blue 4-4-0 I got it in a lot with other 4-4-0s It is a lovely engine and it's somewhat rare Bachmann Made some beautiful paint schemes for there 4-4-0s Bachmann originally set them up to work similar to the Rivarossi 4-4-0s But it actually picks up Power for the motor only by the tender So it really does struggle over switch tracks. I have seen another layout just like the tornado but it is on a timer of when it shows
